Alaska's Same Sex Benefits for State Employees

This is the official State of Alaska website, Department of Administration, Retirement and Benefits Page.

Background Information on the November 2006 Special Session and Same-sex Domestic Partner Benefits

This is the way it played out.

The Alaska Supreme Court ruled that the same benefits must be given to same-sex partners as they are to hetero couples.

The legislature reacted by trying to BAN same-sex benefits with a house bill.

Palin VETOED the bill banning same-sex benefits citing the constitutionality of such a law in light of the Supreme Court ruling.

Palin effectively granted same-sex benefits with her veto, using the Alaska Supreme Court as cover.
