A Memo to Colin Powell: If you have chosen to endorse Barack Obama please do so during the GOP convention.
Well this was more of an idea than a memo that although I know probably won't be read by anyone from either the Powell or Obama camps it would be an unbelievable showing of one-upsmanship that would steal spotlight from the convention. One of the highest ranking and respected men in this nation, a self identified Republican, would be (if he actually does decide to do so) endorsing Obama during the one moment when the GOP truly controls the spotlight. It would not only steal the thunder of the GOP convention it would send a message to the nation and the undecideds that a bipartisan president is what they would be getting with Obama. Just a hope, but what else do I have in this situation?

Well, Powell's said he won't be in Denver.
Personally, I'd love a Powell endorsement - say, right after McCain's acceptance speech.

I didn't say during the Dem Convention. I said the GOP one, it would steal the spotlight and the shine from the GOP convention.

*sigh* Since Powell won't be in Denver, it seems unlikely he would endorse Obama during the DNC. Therefore, an endorsement during the RNC isn't out of the question.
I figured you'd get that implication.

It's a little scary in prospect, because I have hoped that Powell will be a player in the Obama campaign/administration, but in reality, Powell really does not seem a viable VP choice for McCain.
Beyond the dubious consideration that as a black man, he might somehow negate Obama's edge among such voters, Powell's extensive foreign policy and national security creds actually overshadow McCain's.
While Biden's national security background neatly complements Obama's domestic policy strengths, a Powell VP candidacy would actually reduce the McCain appeal to a single national security/foreign policy dimension.
Maybe I am whistling past the graveyard, but i am determined not to worry about Powell for VP!

There's no chance whatsoever of a Powell VP. Just like with Patraeus, McCain is just trying to pull media attention from the Dems and imply that Powell thinks enough of him to even consider such a thing.

I think you are absolutely right.
Here is the link from Politico about Powell as Repub VP that I should have included in my first comment. I got to thinking about this story when I read One's memo to Powell post at the top of this thread.
I honestly think that Powell could be part of the "solution" to this mess, and I cringe at the prospect of his enlisting in the dark forces of the "problem."

You're also right that it was just strange that he would seriously throw out General Petraeus's name.

Can't believe Chuck Todd actually tried to validate some sort of "split screen" of coverage since McCain was shelling out any name he could think of.
