With Friends Like This, Who Needs Enemas?

Hint: Keep reading, you'll love my ending.

Following up on Gary Cohen's post, I decided to register my complaint to Rachel Sklar about her hit piece at HuffPo under the headline "Obama's Revenge: New Yorker Reporter Banned From Press Plane For Overseas Trip."

I just emailed this to Rachel under the subject line "Are you nuts, Rachel?" Of course, she isn't but I thought I would provoke a reaction. I got one. I wrote:

Having been a journalist most of my life, I understand the meaning of limited space. Sometimes there are enough seats on a plane. In the case of your assertion that Obama snubbed the New Yorker, there aren't enough seats on five planes to accommodate all the press that wanted to tag along. You're giving new meaning to "unfounded rumor."

I got this reply from Rachel:

If you've been a journalist all your life, then I would love to know how much success you've had cold-emailing strangers leading with flat-out insults.

First of all, the information was reported by Mike Allen of Politico. Was his note that the Obama campaign was "furious" at the NYer just fun color? Come on.

Second of all, yes there were limited seats for lots of requests. But there are norms that are established, regulars that included for a variety of reasons. Carrie Budoff-Brown from Politico is on the plane - so is Karen Tumulty from Time - so is Lynn Sweet from the Chicago Sun-Times - but it looks like there's someone from the Tribune, too. Why two papers from the same city? Because it's Chicago? Can't Ben Smith pick someone else's reports? These decisions are entirely discretionary. We both know that. We also both know (I am assuming) that Lizza has been writing on Obama for ages, for TNR and GQ and the Atlantic too. He is an ace reporter and has been doing some work of real substance on this campaign, has been out on the trail with a vengeance, and is well-known to Team Obama (and probably well-loved, considering some of his previous material). This isn't a case of suddenly the New Yorker is small potatoes. And it's not like drawing straws. This also seems consistent with certain other reactions of the Obama campaign. I stand by my analysis, and the concerns it raises.

But seriously, dude, you might want to rethink the subject line. There's no need to be rude. I might get offended and then deny you access - I hear that's done.

RS

to which I replied:

So, you didn't like the opener? There's as much truth in my subject line as there was in your headline. And also less of that "facts not in evidence" thing your post displays. See, it's a long way from saying that Obama's campaign is "furious" to concluding without a scrap of evidence that the New Yorker was "BANNED." Or didn't you learn that in journalism school?

P.S. Rachel's reply came with a line at the end that says: "This email is off the record unless otherwise indicated."

Sorry, Rachel, you replied before I agreed to the ground rules. It's ON the record. I guess that's another one your professors overlooked.

Rachel replied to my reply:

I didn't go to journalism school; you clearly didn't go to charm school.

Sorry, but I just don't understand why I should correspond with you. You're rude. If you weren't rude, I'd be more inclined.

I think Gawker sets it out better than I did, actually: http://gawker.com/5027132/obamas-cartoon-retribution

This is politics. Everyone knows what they are doing and what signals they are sending.

and I replied:

And EVERYONE knows that competition for those 40 seats was more intense than it has been for any other Obama flight, with more major media requesting seats. Maybe the Obama campaign just decided to give a few seats to other media that haven't always been as lucky as the New Yorker.

Here's the payoff, wherein Rachel admits she has no facts to support her conclusion. With "friends" like this in the "liberal media," who needs enemas from FOX News? Just got this from Rachel:

Interesting timing for such magnanimity, no?

And yes, of course, all of that is true. Plausible deniability. I looked at all the factors, and drew a conclusion. I truly do not think I am wrong. But definitely concede that I haven't proved it. Don't believe I said I had - just presented the ev, and my conclusion.

It wasn't quite surgical, but it got the job done. Mazel tov.

Is this pseudonym supposed to be the hunch-back "Ripper McCord" who used to hang around the Greyhound bus station in Baltimore, rubbing his hump up against undercover vice cops and asking for a taste of "the real Obama?"

But there is no "real Obama."

HuffPo has been going down hill for some time. The 'articles' are increasingly sensationalist and often directly from ABC.

It's quite pathetic and sad to see.

Actually, Ripper, I hope you and everyone else recognizes that many of these conclusions can be applicably drawn into other areas of media reporting.

I'm really frustrated, for example, of having to discuss issues with people who are "informed" by short articles found on the web. Despite everyone saying how democratic the web is, you really do need to maintain some type of standard. For example, most scientific issues can't be followed by reading web news articles or blogs unless you can independently discern how much value the article has (e.g. you are trained in science). This, however, doesn't stop the multitudes from thinking that they "know something" simply because they parrot what the random web article says.

What's worse is that often the reporter will accidentally or intentionally screw up your quote by taking it out of context or simply getting it wrong. I speak from experience.

This is the reason that, at the end of the day, you have to be at least as skeptical of the "new" (Internet) media, as the old MSM.

In my view the true value of the Internet is videos that don't die in some memory hole.

I agree wholeheartedly, especially with your quote

the true value of the Internet is videos that don't die in some memory hole.

I mean how else can we show just how pathetic the MSM is by treating this election as if we have 2 equally viable candidates. Check out this video ditty from Jed Report. Short, sweet, concise.

Gotta love video.

I wonder if there is a way to introduce a new standard that all media clearly post their 'standards' of journalism with an expectation to be held publicly accountable. It would be interesting to see what those 'standards' would look like.

Glad you brought that up. If you want to have an impact, contact me at SCAAMD's temporary (and admittedly juvenile) email: eddiestinkypants@att.net

I say make the email address permanent. Sometimes you've got to fight fire with fire.

Standards only apply when there are consequences with bad behavior. Otherwise, it's impossible to enforce the standards.

With the infinite access of the Internet, there is no downside to making outrageous statements. If you get caught, you simply fabricate a new name and start again.

Much like some of the posters here! ;-)

Clearthinker. I would ask that you go to the thread discussing this issues of "names" where we were discussing earlier today, as I left a follow-up note for you there. I would also ask that you respond there please. Thank you.

Uh, no, sorry, not interesting in being part of the same type of drama that apparently you and Genghis had (whatever it was, it was only indirectly referenced on that thread and I never followed it in person). As I said, I'm here to discuss ideas/perspectives and not to get into "entertainment".

You, clearthinker, have just destroyed your own credibility. You made a series of statements that I was someone I was not, and even after that was made clear to you, you continue. e.g. you said, "The fact that you feel a need to have a specific avatar for each of your specific moods is really your issue."

I have offered you multiple chances to apologize, and stated that I would be happy to start with a clean slate. Is THIS your clear-thinking? When in a hole, stop digging. When you have a chance at a clean slate, take it. When you've made a mistake, own up.

These are some fundamentals of clear-thinking, when it comes to engaging with others. My offer stands.

I am new to the concept of multiple-personalities on a more "serious" board like TPM. But, apparently Genghis thought the same thing and Articleman saw similarities as well.

I do find it interesting you are doing exactly what I would expect of a performance artist now -- trying to find a partner to play against. Thanks for the offer, but no.

And the scarecrow saw strawmen where they didn't exist, which is nothing to crow about.

She says she's a journalist. What's the harm in providing her contact info? She can learn to hit the delete button, just like the rest of us.

This is a far cry from posting a phone number or a physical address. It may not be "cool" however. I'll give you that.

From someone who gets 400 emails a day to one account and over 1000 to a now unused account, it can be quite the inconvenience.

What I loved is where she blamed it all on Mike Allen of Politico: "First of all, the information was reported by Mike Allen of Politico. Was his note that the Obama campaign was "furious" at the NYer just fun color? Come on."

It's the "I'm only saying what he said!" defense.

And what's with "he's an ace reporter" in her over-the-top defense of Ryan Lizza? Should we be reading more into that statement? Is there some budding romance? Seriously, why should Rachel Sklar care whether or not Ryan Lizza (employee of a "competitor") makes it onto the campaign plane? Unless.....

But my absolute favorite is this throwaway gem: "I didn't go to journalism school..." (er, Rachel... we could tell that already.)

"Jade 7243" is a cute name for a lying, knee-jerk shill for Obama.

Did you sell your soul for a nickel, "Jade 7243," or did the bidding go all the way to a dime?

What an unwarranted personal attack by a person of questionable intelligence and unquestionable lack of morality.

She quotes Mike Allen as a source? I think maybe she's less than wholly bright.

Pretty sad that she has no sense of humor about herself or her work. I don't think your correspondence was even close to rude. She should be ashamed of herself, especially for trying to out your "real name" which is a pretty low tactic (journalists should support anonymity on the Internet because it makes the Web safer for whistle blowers).

avatar

You did a good job of getting your point across...and though she wouldn't/couldn't/shouldn't respond to you because of your rudeness, she did.
She came out of the exchange looking like a flip-flopper searching for a friend.

I am going to sound really ageist here, but how old is this woman? She comes across as really juvenile (which isn't saying that us old farts can't accomplish that feat as well). She's just not professional, in more ways than one. Why is she so emotional?

Gary Cohen's post just got disappeared into "file not found" land.

?

That's very strange, isn't it.

New Yorker banned from Obama press plane??? Huffpost gets it wrong.
by Gary Cohen

The link is still up in the Rec'd Reader Posts, but you're right. It's gone. Wonder if mine are next?

Your revelation of the email correspondence between the two of you was first posted there, was it not?

Right.

If your threads are blackholed by TPM, you may want to consider taking it to Tina Dupuy who wrote the bit asking if Rachel Sklar is the "new Geraldo Rivera" .

http://www.mediabistro.com/fishbowlLA/tangled_web/rachel_sklar_is_sensationalistic_89767.asp#

Rachel has a reputation to shield and she used to be employed @ mediabistro's fishbowlNY after she quit her corporate attorney career.

It's back.

Right, Josh told me it was temporarily taken down to remove Ms. Sklar's email address as it is against TPM's policy to post personal email addresses without the permission of the owner.

Duh. I see Josh included the gist of his email reply in an editorial note with the post.

And did you have to be told posting someone's email address isn't cool?

I didn't post it, Des. But don't let the facts get in the way of bashing me.

Never has yet, so I wouldn't expect des to do it differently.

I like this post a lot and I'm glad you didn't let her just brush you off with that email - she's the one who is rude and trying to avoid, from what she said, acknowledging a fuck up.

Good on you for keeping on her. That's when the netroots really do live up to the potential - keeping the MSM as honest as possible, since they are such fucking liars - every one of them from what I can tell.

And lazy.

Watch out ripper mccord; she might make up with you, just so she can be the one to break up with you. :)

Nice work.

My hat is off to you for exposing this "story" and exposing her obvious bias towards Obama and her need to "invent" facts for her conclusions! I appreciate what you did and please keep up the good work!

You got to her by a challange to her ego! excellent!

Interesting. Thanks Ripper.
