What's more elitist than a $400 haircut?
How about $520 dollar shoes?
From Huffington Post:
This
summer John McCain is traveling in style. He has worn a pair of $520
black leather Ferragamo shoes on every recent campaign stop — from a
news conference with the Dalai Lama to a supermarket visit in
Bethlehem, PA. The Calfskin loafers, with silver-tone "Gancini" buckles, are imported from Italy.
In response to Barack Obama's foreign tour, McCain spent much of his energy last week emphasizing his focus on domestic issues. What better way to show his American pride than to tour the country in Italian leather?

How about owning 7-8 houses while many Americans are struggling to keep their only one?

I wonder how many illegal aliens it takes to maintain all those homes? Oops, I mean undocumented workers. Oops, I mean modern slaves.

IOKIYAR!
Seriously, this would be weeks of coverage if it were Obama.
McCain is the real elitist in this race. Did you see what he said at a fundraiser in Colorado?
Ha-ha, you're wife's so rich, that's so funny.

Hey, I'm Italian American. What's wrong with our leather?
McCain sucks.
Italian fashion rocks.
Can Obama pick both Dolce and Gabana as his running mates?

Didn't Fred Thompson wear Ferragamo loafers to the Iowa state fair last year? I remember that being a small controversy. Maybe only on the blogs. I don't remember exactly.

Do you think Fox News will make as big a deal out of this as Bill Clinton's or John Edwards' haircut? Will the rest of the media say anything about it...nope. It's already dead and Obama's people have let it slip by. It's dead and only something that readers of this blog will piss and moan about. If the Obama campaign is letting McCain and the Republicans paint him as "elitist" and "out of touch," then they deserve everything they get just like John Kerry did.
Democrats continually amaze me with their magnificent talent for letting openings like this or Cindy McCain's millions and her filthy spending habits, John McCain's abandoning his first wife for a younger rich woman, McCain's flip floppery, and his simply being a bumbling angry confused old man who really is out of touch.
Here's an opening to all of the folks who've criticized me over the past...the Clintons would not have let this happen.

I agree. Clinton wouldn't have let that slide. That old scumbag McCain needs to be smacked upside the head with negative ads.

He needs to be smacked upside his head with his $520 Italian loafers.
It's absolutely true: Democrats aren't cut out for the kind of Junior High quality insults, unless the Democrat is a journalist and the insult is aimed at another Democrat.
What would Maureen Dowd say if Obama were spotted in those loafers? "Obambi gets new hoofs"?
What's the "Breck Girl" equivalent for shoes?

A $500 pair of shoes might make a physical difference if you're on your feet all day, and theoretically they can last a few years as a reasonable investment.
$400 haircuts typically need to be renewed every few weeks.
Of course if you're running a $250 million campaign, a few thousand in good grooming is a reasonable investment. Some say Nixon lost the 1960 election due to bad makeup and a poor shave.

Not if you're a Democratic candidate. Then it's just vanity and arrogance.
Haven't you been paying attention? A Democrat who spends $500 on a pair of shoes, or anything for that matter, is an elitist hypocrite - a Republican who spends $500 on anything is a man of the people, and stylish to boot!

Nixon lost the debate in 1960 because he refused to wear TV makeup and was sweating like the pig he was under the lights.

I just don't understand how the GOP has turned the word "elitist" to apply to educated, thinking people. The GOP is the party of big money and big business. They are ALL elitists, yet they have redefined that term to apply to college professors and people who actually know about politics, international affairs, economics and other crucial matters.
I understand the desire for regular folk to see that their politicians are grounded and can relate to their everyday issues, but geez isn't it an obvious choice between a professor of political science and some spoiled rich brat whose entire life was predetermined by money and power?
The GOP did a phenomenal marketing job with GWB by having him look like the guy someone at the Elk's Lodge could relate to. That guy has never balanced a check book, tried to figure out his health insurance or even worry about where his daughters are (despite their antics, the Secret Service does that for him). The bottom line is that the GOP did an excellent job of turning a flunkie, below average intelligence, morally corrupt person into a "regular guy."
We can't let this just hang there when we go trolling. Those of us out here need to fight back when Obama is called an "elitist." In response to those attacks our response should be "No, he is smart and informed, McCain with his money and powerful wife and family is the elitist."

Unfortunately, what gave the $400 haircut legs was 1) Edwards billed it to the campaign, 2) it played into his pretty-boy image, and 3) there was that youtube clip of him combing his hair in mirror....

And Maureen Dowd dubbing him "Breck Girl." You know Maureen Dowd, who also gave Obama the "Obambi" nickname.
Funny, but I haven't heard her say anything about McQueeg's shoes. And she's what the right wing calls the "liberal media." I guess she only hurts the ones she loves.
