Vanity Fair Counters The New Yorker's Cover With One of Their Own
In the recent uproar over The New Yorker's offensive cartoon of the Obamas I remember readers here discussing a cartoon of the McCains they'd like to see. Well Vanity Fair has come up with one thats not too shabby. It shows the elderly McCain using a walker while fist bumping Cindy who is holding a bunch of prescription pill bottles in her other hand. It could be pretty satisfying, except for one thing. It's a bit of a rip off of one drawn by David Horsey on July 15 for the Seattle P-I in response to The New Yorker's. In Horsey's McCain is in a wheel chair but Cindy has her pills. They both have a portrait of Cheney on the wall and the Constitution burning in the fireplace.
NewsBusters is calling Vanity Fair on it.

Sure looks like Bush on the wall in the Vanity Fair one to me!

You frequently run into cartoons with very similar takes on the big issue of the moment.

The Constitution in the fire place was pretty much a guarantee as a counter to the flag from the NYer piece. As for the prescription pills, it's also pretty much the obvious go-to for an attack on Cindy to match the attack on Michelle. That there's a photo of someone over the fireplace is a reflection of the Osama picture in the original, but here it's Bush (as clearthinker pointed out) whereas in the one you point to it was Cheney. The only other similarity is making fun of McCain's age, where here they went with the walker to the wheelchair in the one you point to. So to agree with Donal, I think this is merely a case of natural convergence.

I agree, these are the obvious features to lampoon and the drawings really aren't that similar. If this is considered plagiarism (or whatever the cartoon equivalent of plagiarism is) than most political cartoonists are plagiarizing each other constantly. And the VF cover will have a lot more circulation; I like it!
