The Obvious Line For Clark/Obama to use.
Why, oh why, didn't Wes Clark say this when he was interviewed about his remarks on meet the press.
"I don't believe that being injured or captured in war makes you automatically more qualified to be president than an opponent who hasn't served in wartime. For that matter, neither does John McCain.
If John McCain believed that serving your country in uniform in wartime made you a better president, he would have endorsed John Kerry against George W. Bush."

Ah, hell ..... I can almost *taste* the delight if that had been said. And almost see the reaction on Bob Schieffer's face!
Now the person who would have thought fast enough to do something that pointed --- *that* person should be the VP. The only ones I can picture having had the wit, directness and speed would be Biden and John Edwards ..... well, and possibly Kerry himself.
Kudos - a good line is a good line and deserves a nod .... even if, sigh, it's a day late and thought up by someone other than the person who by rights should have delivered it.

I know they're trying to make McCain Bush III (and he would be), but I also think they should point out that McCain ALMOST became John Kerry's Vice President. He was willing to become a Democrat, he just didn't jump. This irritates Republicans to no end and is an effective way to shave off the GOP hardcore, looney-toons base.

Hey SPQR: Links below. GOP's deny it now, but he was close. At any rate, McCain's very public record of spurning some GOP measures is VERY irksome to most of the Republican base.

Well, it's not too late. This is a nice crystallization of a position that will make many McCain supporters' heads spin.

If McCain keeps caterwauling about this, then he'll have the chance.

Good point Democritters. How many heroic servicemen later turned out to be crooks, swine and worse? We're supposed to elect McShame because he was once a prisoner of war? Please.

If McCain wants to say his service qualifies him to be President, how come we can't see his military record?
I don't think Obama needs this to win...
I believe the freakin' fourth estate needs to probe this point to survive. If McCain's military records say he is a crappy leader, the public has the right to know. I am livid that someone who was paid by taxpayer money can seal their military records and run for public office. This is a load of crap.
THE PUBLIC HAS A RIGHT TO KNOW - I want to read McCain's real resume, not a cherry picked version. I want to live in the United States again, not some freaky right-wing Soviet Union.

To be more clear on my point above, I want to read his post-POW Military record... specifically his leadership evaluations as a squadron commander - perhaps Wes Clark was wrong - maybe he was a great squadron leader and showed the leadership aptitude that really would qualify him to be president. However, since most Republicans are pathological say the absolute opposite of the truth, black is white, night is day, I'd wager large tracts of land that the leadership evaluations fall somewhere on a scale of lackluster to pure suckitude. Whichever the case, if he runs on it, we have the right to evaluate his military resume.... after all, we the taxpayers have been paying McCain for years - we're his boss.

Wait a minute. You want to start comparing Obama to BUSH and use that as a reason to vote for him? I think Clark has done just fine. He's been out explaining his point - making it clear that John McCain is a hero and he did all he could do in his military career, but that doesn't automatically qualify him to be president. But to then say that Bush's lack of military service obviously didn't disqualify HIM for the presidency is not a helpful point. SOMETHING should have disqualified him for the presidency and I think you could actually point to his lack of personal experience in a war as a pretty key point in his willingness to just jump into wars willy-nilly. That doesn't mean Obama will do the same thing, but the comparison does Barack no favors. I'd just continue to hit on his judgement and that military service doesn't automatically qualify you for anything other than military service.

Not compare Obama to Bush -- but to catch McCain in a contradiction. How can he take umbrage at what Clark is saying yet still have supported Bush over Kerry? Anyone?
Anyway, I am not a lawyer, but I would think in a line of questioning of this nature, this would be a good thing to lead to. After all, isn't this the job of a good litigator? Cull out contradictions?
