Spinning Positions Becomes Making Up Stuff

What happened to the good old days when tact was employed to misrepresent your opponent's position? I mean, at least Republicans worked off reality and tried to reshape it. Now, they don't even bother -- Republicans just make up stuff. "Obama says no to electric cars." "Obama will tax 32,000 incomes." "Obama rapes white women and children -- not black women and children, but he's thought about it." (So I played along with them on the last one -- Republicans only imply that last point, they would never make that one explicitly)

So when did we cross the line? Was Swiftboating the prelude or September 11th? What suggested to these folk that a totally detached version of events would stick in enough places? Are they still assuming mass retardation?

Given the diversity of media readily available, people don't turn to monopolized information anymore. I would argue, bold faced lying is a short-term strategy which will work in isolation (the Confederacy -- I mean the South). But we're too connected and anticipatory for that non-sense to work this go-round.
