Something Important, For a Change

[I am going to be vilified for posting this on TPM, Maybe Banned!]

Man for man, position for position, the San Diego Chargers have had the best team in the NFL for at least two years...with one glaring exception: The Quarterback.

Now that it appears Brett Favre may un-retire and become essentially a free agent, the Chargers have their chance to win the Super Bowl.

Barring injury, and based on his fabulous play last season, Favre may have a couple of very productive seasons still in him. The Charger offensive line can virtually put him in a vault as far as pass protection is concerned. And having LT and his powerhouse lead-blocker, O'Neal, means no opponent can ignore the run and merely chase Brett around the backfield at will.

How much will it cost the team? That's not my concern. This city already went through a deal where the TAXPAYERS!!! bought any unsold tickets for billionaire Spanos that the team could not sell.

Spanos can buy a Super Bowl or two. The current QB is a gamer, buit short on skill.

San Diego Charger fans speak up.

Well Fred, let me agree that, position by position, SD has been the best team for the last two years. But they were coached by Marty and Norv.

It does make a difference.

Indiex,

The Norv for Marty swap was detested here, but at least they didn't go one and out in the playoffs last year.

This town is not like NY or Philly...minor progress is greeted with enthusiasm.

The shame is, it's one of the most talented football teams--period--I've ever seen, yet we don't win the big ones.

Not unless the content bullies get to you.

Long time contributor Reed Hundt, a friend of Josh's, used to post on TPMCafe on the Washington Redkins quite often. Here's one example:

http://tpmcafe.talkingpointsmemo.com/2006/09/11/redskins_return/

To be fair, I must admit that back then, there was a different breed of content bullies from the current "all Obama all the time" crowd--since most of the contributors back then did serious posts on foreign affairs and secondarily, on Federal government issues, some people would dis him on those threads for using space on such silly pursuits. But that didn't seem to stop him, he even said once to one challenger that he's going to use the blog space for whatever he wants. I suspect depression about the Redskins that made him quit posting on them? :-)

artappraiser,

I often , almost always, post on issues, but not always from the O=God point of view.

I am astonished that these posts draw few comments, no recommendations (tho I no longer care about that,) while nonsense posts, often mere recapitulations on what Keith Olberman and his many lookalikes had to say today.

Unless banned, I'm going to write what I want to write about...I thought that was the purpose under-girding sites like this.

Fred

Write what you feel like writing. Just keep the readers in mind in regard to content. If you don't care what the reader thinks, write anyway. Just expect it to be a solitary experience. Yet, hopefully a gratifying one.

Melissa,

So kind of you to respond.

I must admit, I refrain from replying to some of your posts because I'm such a freaking hard-ass, and sometimes I think your posts too sentimental---my fault, not yours.

It is solitary, but it sure as hell is gratifying as well.

Again, thank you for your thoughtful and tender reply, so nice of you...and much appreciated.

I don't know if Favre can pull it off. It depends... what's his position on FISA? :-)

PatriotActor,

His position is Quarterback...and he can play it!

Fred

I'm a lifelong, diehard 49'er fan who is going to be enjoying this season with one eye on my team and the other eye across the Bay -- on da Raiders and JaMarcus Russell.

'Course, shall open a third eye should Favre follow through on his threat to rejoin the league. Just as I was fortunate as to have witnessed the careers of gridiron gods such as Kenny Stabler, Joe Montana, and Steve Young, I'm not stupid enough as to allow team loyalties poison my view of QB greatness.

coralsea,

Taking nothing away from the guys you mentioned, you know we HATE the Raiders down here.

You must admit that, with Favre, the Chargers can go all the way, no?

Fred

Fred - am all too aware of the sentiments in your locale (I was at a game a few years back where some SD asshole stabbed a Raider fan).

That said - and as per my previous post - I make a point of keeping an eye on gridiron QB demigods - irrespective of their team. Yes, I have my personal fave teams -- but I'm old enough to genuinely appreciate specific athletes. Brett Favre definitely falls under this heading.

D'oh! To answer your question: uhm, hell yeah -- should SD pick up Favre one might as well go to southwest.com and book their flight for the stupor bowl.

I'll put up the Bengals against any team in the AFL/NFL in the country - we've had more indictments, more arrests, more warrants issued, more grand juries held and more convictions than any other team in either league. Our attorneys can out - law any other legal team in the nation and if football was played the way it should be, with guns, our team could outshoot any SD player any day of the week.

Go ahead, pick up Favre, we have Taft, Stettinius and Hollister LLC. just itching for a matchup.

As a Packers fan, whose Chargers always rated #2, I have to admit that - focusing solely on the goal of one of those teams winning the Super Bowl - Favre should go to the Chargers. It would be a joy to watch that offense with a talented QB.

Go Chargers!
