"Oh, yes - with sprinkles!"

(Cross-posted here.)

I'm normally no conspiracy theorist (save JFK), but the Associated Press' brazen PR effort for John McCain seems to finally be getting some notice.

While the AP's been serving McCain donuts (literally), they've taken a sharp turn against Obama, hammering him in the vein of McCain's PR sycophants. I've gone on about it as recently as yesterday, and this is only the second time (first was Jed) I've seen something similar ripping them for their obvious bias:

Since then, I can’t help but notice that the AP hasn’t exactly been neutral. A month ago, the AP ran an article about the “people who might complicate Obama’s campaign,” including Tony Rezko and Jeremiah Wright. The piece not only read like a slam job, it actually resembled an RNC oppo dump, which for all I know, it was.

Two weeks ago, the same reporter who made sure McCain had coffee to go with his donuts wrote a scathing, 900-word reprimand of Obama’s decision to bypass the public financing system in the general election. It was filled with errors of fact and judgment, and ignored the fact that McCain has illegally played fast and loose with the public-financing system this year.

And just to add insult to injury, the AP praises McCain’s record of bipartisanship on issues like tobacco and immigration reform, without noting that McCain completely reversed course and no longer believes in the position the AP is touting.

The Associated Press is one of the most widely read, if not the most read, sources of news in print journalism in the U.S. If it could at least pretend to be objective in the presidential campaign, I’m sure we’d all appreciate it.

It might be nice if we knew the Associated Press weren't either in the tank for one candidate, or trying to manipulate it to service their readership totals. One of the two is happening. It's time that folks got wise to this.

Maybe Cindy McCain sends the AP beer?

McCain courts the media in numerous ways and it is very effective. I think they need to be called on it repeatedly. We need to write to them where we find bias and not let up. When Clinton complained about bias media outlets changed their stance. We need to rattle the cages.

Liberal bias my ass.

Agreed. Everytime we see this media bias, send off an email or other communique - however e-mails are best. Unlike our public officials, media does pay attention to these emails and often (based on volume and content of same) do review and even 'update'. If they are called on their 'misreporting' oft enough, they do a better job which means we have to do a better job too!

AP's Liz Sidoti has been called out before as a "McCain shill" here at TPM:

You have to wonder just what is up with The Associated Press.
Maybe they really do have Obama confused with Osama.

Just as "blame the media" didn't work for Hillary, it ain't going to work for Obama either.

Both he and McCain have enjoyed an almost symbiotic relationship with the media, irrespective of their ideological differences.

That's in the process of changing, for both guys.

Their supporters would be better advised to rant about the opponent's shortcomings than those of the very imperfect media.

Except that when Hillary complained about bias against her and for Obama, there was an obvious and immediate change in the reporting being done. When Hillary complained about the bias against her at debates, the bias immediately shifted against Obama instead.

We all know certain media outlets have biases, but a source like the AP should not be showing such disgustingly obvious and blatant bias against Obama. It's just not appropriate.

CS,

If you get a chance, read my post on the editorial in today's NYTimes; better yet, read the editorial. I link to it on my post. You think they and the AP had lunch together on Wednesday?

I also disagree that HRC's and Bill's whining changed the tone of media coverage of her or Obama.

And please don't misunderstand me, I think the "media" does a piss poor job of covering anything except Madonna, Britney and A-Rod.

FB

I read the editorial. It's crap. So yeah, I think the NY Times probably dined together.

I think I might have to do a post specifically on that editorial to show why it's such a load of crap. Heh.

We'll agree to disagree on that point. =) You're right, though. The media does do a piss poor job. That's why I have to use so many different sources. Reuters has always seemed decently reliable, except with their polling...

It was SNL sending up the media that made them change tack, not Hillary complaining - she'd been doing that for years.

Eh, I'll concede to that, I guess. =P

Guys, the clearest sign AP is in the tank for McCain?

Look at the Board of directors....there is one Rupert Murdoch

Murdoch doesn't jump onto sinking ships. During this cycle, many of his outlets have been giving Obama pretty favorable coverage. Murdoch will side with "winners" and "rockstars" over conservatives any day. Just look at his alliance with Tony Blair.

But the bias in favor of McCain is more of an ingrained trait - a remnant of the '90s and his 2000 run as a 'maverick'.

The difference is that while many media outlets will be "favorable" and "positive" towards Obama, their attitude towards McCain defines the entire frame of discussion - IE, they take as their starting point several "facts" - McCain is Independent, McCain is a Maverick, McCain is straight-talking, McCain is a Hero. Etc. Any of their coverage after that always refers back to that key frame - hence the Wes Clark debacle.
