Obama Wants to buy off religous vote
According to the AP, Barack Obama wants to continue and expand Bush's "faith-based" (or "religious") funding programs.
Funny how Obama didn't bring this up in the primary.
These religious funding programs corrupt churches and the government, both. From the little coverage we've seen (mainly through the TPM media empire) these seem to be massive patronage programs for Bush's religious right pals.
And the idea that Obama supports using government dollars in a discriminatory way is just shocking and very very disappointing.

Excellent reply jsfox. I'm recommending this post because of your reply. The post itself gives no substantive info or background on how these programs are "corrupt" and normally I wouldn't recommend it. Perhaps you should make your own post about this issue including the above info for all the people that are getting frothy about this.

In reply to the quote above from Obama:
By the way, this comment by Obama mirrors my own about how these programs can, and did under Bush, corrupt BOTH church and state.
So there's agreement. I'm glad Obama sees these programs this way and I hope all the people negotiating, implementing and defending his policies do, as well.
(My title for the post was a bit overdone).

As much as I am for a firm separation of church and state, there are social programs provided by these religious organizations that cross all religious boundaries. A good example is the Jewish Community Center which receives funding from the NYS Department of Aging to subsidize adult day care progams etc - something I take full advantage of for my mom. My mom is Catholic and has a Muslim last name, so sufficed to say there is no discrimination on whom they provide the services to. So long as they are not permitted to proselytize, I am all for funding to religious and community organizations to do the real social services work that the gov't either can't do effectively or has no interest in trying.

Thanks for the comments. Yes, I did know Obama was heading in this direction previously but the level of detail provided.
I could substantiate my points more, but am in a very busy period of life that leaves no time for blogging. Alas!
I'm pretty sure some of the faith-based abuses have been chronicled right here in the TPM media empire. I will try to remember to post links in time.
