Obama insults his supporters' intelligence

avatar

Yes, this is another post about Obama's stance on telecom immunity.  No, I am not encouraging anyone, including myself,  to vote for Mcain instead.
But Obama's response to the anti-immunity group on his blog is transparently misleading and underestimates the intelligence of many of his supporters.  (Many of us against telecom immunity are not as far left as the media would lead you to believe.  I'm center-left. )
Here is Glenn Greenwald's assessment:  http://utdocuments.blogspot.com/2008/07/obamas-new-statement-on-fisa.html
And for those of you that say, "hey, at least he took the time to address those who oppose his view".  Has communicating with the electorate become so rare that it is now considered an indulgence for a politician to go out of his way to talk to voters?
That's ridiculous.
The more Obama, or any other politician, is asked to explain his or her positions, to justify his or her points of view, the more transparent that justification becomes.
Thus, a position either holds up under scrutiny and is reinforced with logic, reason and fact, or  a position doesn't.
Obama's response to his supporters is coherent and presents some good points, but  in some ways, his response is transparently misleading.  And that is what outrages me the most.
Too many politicians are only one talking point deep. When they try to explain themselves, they can't.
I don't believe Obama strengthens his chances of winning this election by weakening his positions.
The democrats are already perceived as spineless.

This comes across as a poorly conceived, and poorly formatted, whine. Why didn't you show examples of what you meant form his speech and put your point across?

Need a tissue?

But Obama's response to the anti-immunity group on his blog is transparently misleading and underestimates the intelligence of many of his supporters.

If your intelligence was insulted by Obama's thoughtful explanation of his position, it must have been because it went way over your head.

The critical line -- which Obama has always said from the outset of his candidacy -- is that you might not always agree with his positions, but that he would listen to his constituents concerns. He did not say he would govern according to polls or the popularity of opinion.

I have said before that far too many of you whining about the FISA legislation have never read it. You are distracted to a certain degree about "retroactive telcom immunity" but miss the larger points of government accountability (that is, failure of the executive branch to get subpoenas for wiretaps will not be tolerated) and that the executive branch cannot threaten or hold hostage private sector businesses with coersive legal action if they refuse to break the law and violate your civil rights, and that "fighting terrorism" is not a blanket excuse for curtailing constitutionally protected rights and imposing virtual martial law.

You cannot see the forest for the trees. You'll throw a temper tantrum at the feet of Obama, but you all have been damn quiet in front of President Bush -- he who ordered the FISA lawbreaking in the first place. Where are the protests in front of the White House? Where are the protests in front of the Justice department? Where is the outrage which should be directed at the Bush administration?

Misguided and misdirected. Telcom immunity is not the problem. It is an administration which believes laws apply to everyone else but not to them. You want something to scream about? Re-read the third sentence in this paragraph.

Nonsense. Of course Obama flipflopped on FISA. Of course he ignored the issues in his response. Of course we shouldpressure the Senate not to cave. And of course Obama should be elected President.

Good post! I'm glad to see that there are people of reason still commenting on these blogs. Some people care so much about being right that they lose sight of the big picture. We have a country to save here. The country is made up of people. The people need help because they don't have jobs or health insurance or food they can afford. What a bunch of ninnies some people are!

John Dean has responded to Obama's FISA position which gives me hope: http://writ.news.findlaw.com/dean/20080702.html

This is an amazing article, and it's worthy of its own posting. I didn't understand the distinction between civil and criminal prosecution as laid out in the bill. I think more Obama supporters need to read Dean's analysis to understand over what they're getting in a tizzy.
My hope is that Obama is saving up to nail Bush and Co. for criminal action on Jan. 21, 2009.
"But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream!"- Amos 5:24

Is that the Watergate John Dean? He get smart in prison or something?

No, Billy. You're just stupid and ill-informed. As usual.

Thanks for your comments, Jade. You're making some unwarranted assumptions about me. That's not my style, so I won't disrespect you.

I would ask you to read Glenn Greenwald's comments on Obama's response:

http://utdocuments.blogspot.com/2008/07/obamas-new-statement-on-fisa.html

If you disagree with any of his points, I'd love for you to explain what part he's misinterpreting.

Granted, this will require a certain level of specificity on your part.

To say we're all whiners won't cut it.

Thanks for providing the link biglith. You've given me a way to gain more insight on this issue.

Thanks for the constructive response to my post.

If I wanted to reply to Greenwald I would go his blog and do so. As this is YOUR blob, I'm replying to YOU.

Why don't you, yourself, quote the bits of Obama's response and tell us your opinion on them and what you would rather see? And while you're at it, tell us what you did like and how you agree with it.

THAT would be worthy of a post, not this dribble which comes across as a 'Look what Greenwald says in his blog' moment.

Is this your blog, or his? Do you have an opinion to express, or just his?

Let's not say "anti-telecom immunity". Say "pro-rule of law".

Changing your decision because less than twenty thousand names,(many multiple signs up by people included) demand that you do so, and you know that changing would not stop the bill from being passed, would be PANDERING. Thank you Senator Obama for not engaging in pointless micro pandering.

Did you protest mightily when the Patriot Act was passed? That is where the 4th amendment truly took the hit. I mean really, I agree with Jade, did his explaination go over your head or are you just parroting azzhat Greenwald.

Get out the fucking violins. Another pathetic whiner drops his load and neglects to flush.
