Gary Hart, Donna Rice and John McCain
Oh Man, whiplash sucks.
John McCain has evidently never heard the admonition that we've all hear from our parents at one time or another: Be careful what you wish for.
In 1984, amid rumors of an extramarital affair, Gary Hart issued a challenge to reporters to "Follow me around. I don't care. I'm serious. If anybody wants to put a tail on me, go ahead. They'll be very bored." Unbeknownst to Hart, the night before that challenge was published, reporters from the Miami Herald took pictures of Donna Rice at Hart's home, which were promptly published, ending Hart's electoral hopes. I didn't think that a politician would be foolish enough to try this sort of thing again, but I understimated John McCain.
In one week, he complains that he's not getting enough attention from the media, effectively challenging them to do more reporting on him and his campaign, then promptly ensures that the additional coverage of him will be negative with comically stupid (Iraq/Pakistan border, Osprey Aircraft, timing of the surge and the sunni awakening, etc...)and downright irresponsible (Obama would rather lose a war...) comments on the same day. What a fascinating level of stupidity. It's really unbelieveable.
It is good policy never to underestimate your opponent, but John McCain makes it too easy. Thankfully, every time I lower my estimation of him, he proves beyond the shadow of a doubt that my expectations have not yet sunk to the level of his capabilities.

He's trying to lull us into a false sense of security. He knows that Regular Joe and Jane aren't paying attention right now, so this is the ideal time to make us think he's an easy target.
Then… he'll pounce on us with a Mensa-like grasp of both international politics and economics.

Care to make a wager on the veracity of your last sentence? Hmmmm? (Yeah, I got the 'sarcasm'.)
But if anyone else does, let me know.

He will NEVER exhibit a "Mensa-like grasp" of anything, even what he was doing the hour before.

I'm soooo looking forward to the debates between McCain and Obama.

I've seen this comment posted several times here. I wonder if anyone has actually watched the republican's debates. McCain does not suck at debates. He's not great, but neither is Obama. But he is quick witted and has a bit of a nasty streak. Liberals may find that a weakness but he can get off an occasional biting comment hits hard.
McCain just sucks at giving speeches. He can hold his own in other formats.

I suspect Obama's been thinking about these upcoming encounters rather seriously. And I have to wonder if one possible strategy would be to slyly needle McCain into a nationally televised meltdown - he not only has a nasty streak, he has a near-volcanic temper.
Hell, I'd stand in line in the rain to watch that...

Do you think he could drop a c-bomb in public? Again?

Bear in mind that McCain has very little experience this cycle with one-on-one debates. He had the ability to sit back and let the others bash each other, then choose his moments so chime in. One-on-one debates have a lot more in common with set-peice speeches than with the townhall meetings McCain excells at.

Speaking of Gary Hart. Recall the name of the boat he used to take Donna Rice over to the island of Bimini. Hart's boat was named: Monkey Business.
I also got a kick out of the lame excuse he used to explain why Ms. Rice flew up from Florida and spend the night at his townhouse. He said she was returning a book that she had borrowed from him.

What did you expect from someone that graduated at the very bottom of his class?
Plus, he is a reject of his own party. Yes, worse than Bush.
