Death to Osama, Obama's a Genius
Hooray for Obama! Can I say that Obama's a genius and practical for calling for Bin Laden's execution. I am against the death penalty, but I think in cases like this it is justified.
Politically, Obama is shutting down the right-wings ability to tag him with the liberal or too liberal moniker. He is taking the 'wind out of their sails.'
He is making it very difficult for them to lay a glove on him.
Recommend if you think this is worth discussing.

I dunno, there's something inanely tempting about locking him up and giving him every 'American decedent' luxury and putting it on a live internet feed.. (grin)
Yeah, I agree, Obama did well. Recommended.

Ok. I am generally against the death penalty, but I think in cases like this it is justified.

This is the only case I can think of in our current time.

He's been doing this for weeks now by stressing his less "liberal" positions. I think people sometimes forget that pushing the "ultra-liberal" label was once the main GOP plan for taking him down. When that gets thwarted, they try to call the Dem candidates refusal to live up to the "ultra-liberal" label the result of "flip-flopping." We'll have to see how that goes.
With the radical label off the table (as it appears now, at least), I think Obama will win mainly because he's likeable, charismatic, and appears level-headed. Those intangibles seem to be what it usually comes down to.

Exactly, bdh. In the end it's character that matters It's all those intangibles of body language, sincerity, and a perception of somebody who actually gives a damn about serving the public. People are not scoring this like a debate at the Oxford Union. Who on earth would vote for John McCain if they saw him in Louisiana using a fake grin to urge a nearly empty room to applaud him? Have a guy like that for President? Please.

Seems to me killing him would just make him a martyr. Locking him up would be better, but not in Gitmo.

There was never an investigation into 911 to see who actually was behind it. So now it is progressive to give the death penalty without a trial? Obama is pandering for votes. If Hillary had said this it would be headline news with all Obama supporters calling her names and claiming she was really a republican! So now Obama is for the death penalty and it is okay. No wonder Democrats are seen as wimps!

Ther are no Hillary supporters left in this election. The choices are Obama or McCain. She is no longer a candidate. If she had won the nomination then ther would be no Obama suporters left at this time so no Obama supporter could have raised any objection to any comment she would have made in the alternate universe where she is still a candidate and still has supporters.

I don't think he is pandering. I mean, first, can we say how brilliant Obama is, not knowledge wise- but how to say something and nuance the hell out of it. Everytime I read stories people have of him, they always say they walk out of the room thinking he agreed with them. The entire response was that he is not a cheerleader for the death penalty but killing 3000 Americans justifies this action. Also, not only will we bring him to American justice but also world justice. There is a huge difference between Americans killing Osama, he will then get martyr standing, but if the WORLD agrees then it would be hard to martyr if it wasn't Bush-like justice.

Worse than the death sentence and more to the point,,,,,, duct tape Osama in place to a white resin chair from WalMart,,,,, a Naugahide relic from back in the day would be a nice touch as well,,,,,,,, and force him to watch the Lawrence Welk Christmas special on PBS 24/7 until his last breath.

tennismom, I don't believe that Obama ever said or even implied there would be no trial. I am pretty sure his statement was that IF Osama is caught and CONVICTED that the death penalty was justified in his case.
I really think that so many of these things that Obama is being accused of flip-flopping on, or backing away from his progressive stance on, are actually quite consistant with his message all along. He has always talked about common sense, non-ideological, non-absolutist approaches to wedge-type issues. He has consistanatly written (in his books) and spoken about the importance of seeing both sides of complicated problems and not taking an all-or-nothing approach. This may not be the Obama that some on the left were hoping for, but he is running for President of the United States - not President of the Democratic party or the progressive movement. Our current president has shown us what you get when you govern for only half the country - I for one am all for a more universal executive.

He did not say he was against the death penalty only that he was not a cheer leader for it.

The odds of capturing bin Laden alive are extremely remote, however if it should happen it would be better to let him rot in jail than reward him with martyrdom, which would only provide other extremists with a valuable recruitment tool.
I realize that is too nuanced for the soundbite environment of a political campaign. Better for Obama to say we'll kill him than to provide McCain with a cheap and easy target to attack.

Well said -- I think that's exactly what he's doing, and that he's doing it well. Long-term, big-picture thinking. What a concept.

(oops - that was in reply to bdh saying that Obama's deliberately disarming the "radical left" accusations.

Never an investigation into 9/11? I suppose you think the 9/11 commission was a sham, and bin Laden's confession tape doctored?
Bin Laden was behind 9/11, and he should be brought to justice.

I don't remember the details but a couple years ago some al Qaida operative discussed (might have been overheard via electronic eavesdropping... I can't recall) an incident in which a U.S. patrol in Afganistan had unknowingly ventured very close to bin Laden's hiding place. His security detail was on high alert, prepared to fight to the death and if capture was imminent, they had orders to kill bin Laden rather than allow him to be taken alive.
Anyway, given the extreme improbability of his being a captured alive, over-thinking what we might do with him afterward seems kind of pointless.

He also wants to execute child molesters (even if they don't kill their victims). I'm not sure why this would be a surprise.
