Colombia Hostage Rescue - Does it matter?

avatar

I assume everyone at this point is aware of the recovery of Ms. Betancourt, the 3 American contractors, and 11 other captives from FARC guerillas in  the jungles of Colombia.

I bring this up because I can find no conspicuous mention of this dramatic story anywhere on TPM. For the record, it's certainly possible I missed it -  I only did a brief scan of headlines and titles, and a cursory search. It DOES seem fair to assume from my efforts that this has not been a major subject of discussion here at TPM, in the sense that it is not nearly that difficult to find references (for example) to FISA, or to Obama's Iraq position: These subjects are actually hard to AVOID.

It seems  to me (in sincere good-faith) that this revelation really MATTERS (at least a little), because it's another example of the tone-deafness of a certain important segment of today's Democratic Party. This would seem to be the ultimate, genuine "feel good" story: Good besting evil, in a potentially violent cloak-and-dagger  operation we'll surely see replayed in a Hollywood movie - a risky, complicated, audacious plan, executed to perfection, with the perfect Hollywood outcome. It has REAL action heros. It has inherent "grab",  in its fundamental appeal to so many aspects of our complex and diverse American character.

I think our relative silence on this story gives a clue as to one of the reasons we've suffered so many recent ballot-box disappointments, in spite of having the best of the intellectual argument: We have become progressively and increasingly disconnected from too many of the things that excite the hearts of ordinary people. I think it is entirely possible to be appropriately RESPECTFUL of this dramatic development, without going completely over-the-top into Fox News hyperbole.

I'll admit, I don't know it that dynamic still holds. The Bush Administration and its many enablers have made such a mess of things,  that we have a good chance to win by default, if for no other better reason. Still, I think it remains a potential source of danger for progressive thinkers. I can only imagine what the great communicators of our recent past would have made of this story - Reagan, or even Clinton. They would have grasped INSTANTLY that this is "win/win" in every sense of the word, and would have acted immediately to get ahead of the parade

It seems to me it would be not only a GOOD thing, but a SMART thing, if Sen. Obama and his supporters would unleash some of his considerable rhetorical skills to address this matter. It may not seem exciting in the classroom or at the policy seminar, but there are only so many votes you can get in those places. Many more are available in places where this story has positive power to legitimately stir people.

Maybe because we can see it coming: McCain visits Columbia - saves hostages!

It's not a headline, and I hope it will never be, but it's obvious that is the perception the GOP wants to put on the event.

Held for 6 years, they just happen to be rescued when McCain shows up? Add to this suggestions that the Columbian government regularly works with, and through, the rebels and you can see a general undermining of Obama's NAFTA stance.

"The Columbian government is working hard to stop the drug trade and illegal immigration and how does Obama want to reward them? By reneging on the Free Trade deals we have signed with them to help them have better lives. Obama wants to keep the people of South America impoverished and is against all the new jobs the free trade deal will mean to thousands of US citizens who are hurting in these uncertain times!"

Give it time, it will come. Probably as soon as next week.

Mexico has been turning up the heat in the War on Drugs since their last election. If McCain visiting Mexico can turn the tide on the drug war there like Colombia has turned it on the FARC, then you might have a formidable bit of GOP propaganda to debunk. From all accounts I've heard, though, there is no end in sight to the violence in Mexico.

I think the point I'm trying to make, is that this story is beyond the usual tactical political considerations. No matter who you're supporting for President, or what the implications might be for other tangentially-related issues, it just doesn't look right to remain silent. You rightfully lose more by that, than by whatever other shortfalls might be involved in acknowledging this undeniable victory over very bad people.

Recommended.

But why don't you flesh out your reasons for why you think it's a win/win issue? You generalize the reasons in the third paragraph, but it would be more interesting if you laid out the specifics. You could still do that in the comment thread, in any case.

Also, what do you mean when you say another example of the tone-deafness of a certain important segment of today's Democratic Party? That TPM is tone-deaf? And tone-deaf to what exactly?

The FARC still has hundreds of hostages. Fifteen is a dent, but it's by no means an end to their kidnapping/ransom operations. That the most high-profile hostage was rescued does have action-movie qualities. But to me, the most pleasing thing that could happen as a result of this rescue is that more of those hostages who've been held for god knows how many years might see renewed efforts to secure their safe release.

You started your blog stating the following:

"I assume everyone at this point is aware of the recovery of Ms. Betancourt, the 3 American contractors, and 11 other captives from FARC guerillas in the jungles of Colombia."

Since you must have good reason to make that assumption, then why do you feel that TPM should gild the lily?. TPM does not even bother to report on what is happening in the Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and says almost nothing about the killed or maimed Troops, but you pick out this less important issue to gripe about!
