A Short, Brieft, Terse, Snide Thank You Note to the Reverend Jesse Jackson
Dear Jesse:
I hear you have an "issue" with Senator Barack Obama. I hear you think he's "talking down" to black people. I hear you plan to "cut his nuts off."
Do that and somebody may bust a cap in yo' azz.
I know you're just a tad jealous of Barack. Here is this tall, good-looking, smooth-talking, articulate, Harvard educated black guy, from your hometown, but not one of your "homeboys." To go all biblical on you, here's this Joshua generation guy picking up the staff and moving out smartly, heading towards the promised land, leading the flock.
Jesse, here's the deal: Barack hasn't said anything with regard to the role and responsibility of the black family that hasn't been said before. From W. E. B. DuBois to Bill Cosby and Tavis Smiley to Barack. He hasn't said anything that hasn't been said by the best and brightest of black intelligentsia or academia or in the pulpit or the judge's chambers. It's been said by teachers and doctors and policemen. It's been said in the barbershop and the beauty parlor.
Even your son Jesse Jr. had to take you down a peg or three.
But thank you. Your comments on FOX News with Bill O'Reilly (nonetheless) were very helpful. You let everybody know Barack is his own man and not a puppet of Jesse Jackson.
Thanks, man!

You're very forgiving.
My gut feel is that O is not.
That's why, among many other reasons, he's going to be the next Prez.
Jackson has, by his own jealous words, transformed himself into into a figure of a bygone era, just as Wright did.
And that's a good thing for America and for Barack.

Jesse Jackson recognizes that President Obama would end his race-card playing gravy train. Jackson is also like Wright in that he grew up in different times being at the forefront of the civil rights movement saw many ugly racist things first hand and that is all he knows - he still carries those scars and only sees black and white.

This is a nonissue since I don't really care about Jesse's latest fetish. But as such, I expect the deranged MSM will cover it for the next three weeks unless the good Reverend Wright ups the S&M ante.

You seldom comment or answer direct questions with any facts nor do you put forth anything useful, much less positive. It is you who 'bait and switch' - your only goal is in instigating negative reaction.

When Josh gets quippy, you get all "words matter."
Now, as an inartful reference is attributed to you, a question arises:

Billy, what I can't get over is when people in the thread call working for civil rights a "gravy train." Smells like Republican troll around here.
July 10, 2008 10:35 AM | Reply | Permalink
I appreciate that you may not have grasped the point I was trying to make with regard to the "I guess I love a good slavery joke as much as the next guy" post by JM.
The original post is neither hysterical or nor ranting. I tried to lead you to a slippery slope, thinking you might see, contemplate and have an "A-ha!!!" moment. A lot of people went careening down the slope faster than a 2-man bobsled at an Olympic track. They reacted to what they thought they read, not what was written. They claimed I "played" the race card, call Josh a racist, was "race-baiting" and a whole slew of other stuff, including a "virtual smackdown girlfight."
Perhaps I needed to be a little more explicit. You can say something, that in your world is nothing more than a "joke," a flippant throwaway line that just might send someone else down that slippery slope. But that string of words may evoke a very different response in your reader, listener or viewer. Someone reading the original text of JM's entry might stop to parse his words.
Sadly, far too many people decided they were up for a fight, and not down for a different take on those particular words and their potential impact.
With regard to "bust a cap," I do not come equipped with a stick shoved so far up my own ass that I can't make a joke, or laugh at a good. I think a good writer employs many tricks to convey his or her message, and that include the facility to us conversational language, vernacular, patois, slang, colloquialisms or the Queen's English (or any another language at my disposal) to paint my pretty little word pictures.
So, no panties in a wad or wedged tightly anywhere. I don't see "bust a cap in yo' azz" as inartful. It clearly is artistic. And as someone who deals in both cultures (that is both your "majority" culture and my "minority" culture), I frequently converse or write differently depending the effect I wish to impart.
But thank you for asking. Wazzup? Just takin' it to a whole 'nother level. Dass all.
July 10, 2008 8:41 PM | Reply | Permalink
The irony in this comment, Jade, is that if you were a good writer, you would have pulled off your slippery-slope-slavery post. Clearly, you're not a good enough writer, or you could have disguised your manipulative "tricks" (your word) so that no one would have called you on it. (I mean, come on, babe, even Josh Marshall weighed in! Ugh!) But, hey, I'm sure you'll do a fabulous job next time, chica.
(Psst: You're much better stirring up misogyny, girlfrien'. ;-))

Jade,
You are doing fine. If Billy Glad is attacking you, you must be doing something right. Now you know full well that the Billy Glads of the world never had any time for Jesse Jackson, but of course now the are going to pretend that what he said was very acceptable, because all Billy Glad wants to do is take down Senator Obama. That is what he has been working on all along. Bill Glad is one of those subliminal agitators who tries to exploit any opening in order to create a split in the Obama ranks.
It is quite clear, since Jesse was talking like that about Senator Obama, while preparing to go on the air, that he clearly has been saying similar things to others in order to weaken Obama's chances. Jesse is all about Jesse, and he does not want to be usurped. He could care less about the plight of the community as long as he can stay in power.
I agree with you, that this will actually help Obama.

I'm with you, Liam. Good post Jade, and I don't see what could possibly be trollish about your comments. Jesse knows full well what the folks at Fox might do, and if there's anywhere a good liberal should watch his/her back, it's in their damn studios.
Now if he's annoyed at Barack for not paying sufficient deference to his influence, that's between the two of them. Just because they are both black men from Chicago doesn't mean they have to be BFF. That said, BO is the presumptive nominee for president, and Jackson, as a good party operative, should know what that means...
FWIW, though, I sincerely doubt the good white bigots of WV or KY or OH will pay his comments one bit of attention.

You're right, the pitch is identical to Weaver's. I was about to say that I wouldn't give Weaver as much credit as you do, but now that I think about it, it doesn't take much to create a whole new identity on this site.
What's amazing to me are the trolls that take up residence without anybody noticing.

Bill Glad offers a coarse in Swiftboating 101.
Matthew Weaver is a blogger who has posted many hate filled racists comments on TPM. Many others have challenged him almost every time that he did so. Weaver claims to be a middle aged white man, the father of twin infants. He posts a picture showing him holding the twins. Bill Glad has rarely, if ever, challenged Weaver on his racist comments, but by God he sure rushed in to equate Jade with that racist white man. Billy says that he suspects that Jade is not a black woman, and that she is using a fake picture.
Do you see the beauty of Billy Glad's Swiftboating 101 course folks. Now he has made Jade the black women, into a white male racist.
I am waiting to hear how he has morphed Matthew Weaver into a black woman. According to Billy Logic, nothing is what it seems, so of course Weaver the white male racist must really be a black female civil rights activist.
Of course to take Billy Logic to it's final extension, then of Course Billy Glad is also not what he has been claiming to be.
Good to know.

Poor old Billy G is stuck in the past with Jesse.
In this campaign we have seen Bill Clinton lose his political chops, Ralph Nader run off the rails, and Jesse Jackson implode. All felt slighted by Barack Obama
Clinton will do his charity work. Nader will point out evils in products, and Jesse will talk about inequities in society. However, all lost a little luster after their attacks on Senator Obama. Barack was the clear winner in each encounter.
Great post Jade.

July 10, 2008 10:53 AM | Reply | Permalink
And morally he's several feet taller. In the interest of unity, men like Jackson have been putting up with Obama's insulting manner for the entire campaign. I'm not surprised that the resentment came out, and I'm not surprised that the Progressive press, blogosphere and Obama campaign are trying to get the lid on and nail it shut in the interest of unity. If a white politician had talked about castrating a black man, there would be a firestorm all over the world this morning. White liberals just can't get beyond race. Same double standard we fought to get rid of in Texas years ago. When a black man killed another black man, the police pretty much treated it as a misdemeanor. Get yourself a black-looking avatar and you can say what you want about race, even if what you say is designed to stir the pot.

Holy crap, Billy. I can't follow this rant at all. What are you trying to say?
Are you saying Jackson's comment has not caused a large controversy, because it's black on black? That's strange, because I've been hearing about the remarks all day.
You seem to be complaining, on the one hand, that a white politician would have been taken to the media woodshed for talking about castrating a black politician, and that because this is not exactly happening to Jackson that reflects a double standard. OK. But then instead of taking Jackson to the woodshed yourself, you are leaping to his defense. I don't get it.
In this case, Jade's comments seem roughly in line with most of the other assessments I've heard today: that there is probably some generational strife or pique involved here in the passing of the torch. Is that really so controversial?
I took it that Jade's "cap in yo' ass" comment was just supposed to be a sarcastically crude rejoinder to Jackson's crude "cut his nuts off" comment. You can't actually think it was a "threat". That seems to be about as slow on the uptake as ... well ... Jade's recent misconstrual of Josh Marshall's sarcastic mockery of Jonah Goldberg.
And more with the "trolls". It seems everyone is just a troll for you. Who is not a troll? What does one have to do to avoid being a troll in your universe?

Everyone in Billy's world is either A troll, part of the "echo chamber" (that was his big thing about a month ago), or just not as intelligent as Billy.

Obama needs to realize that the reason that he didn't grow up with his father is that a white woman, his mother, chose to marry a man from a polygamous culture who planned to reside in Africa and when the time came for her to go to Africa she flinched and didn't go with her husband.
I'm not saying Obama Sr. was any type of paragon -- according to Obama's mother Obama Sr. lied about being divorced from Kezia his first wife and also he chose to go to Harvard rather than to a school which would have paid for Obama's mother's living expenses leading to the first separation -- but Obama's mother is the one who ended the marriage and chose not to live with her husband.
Givine Obama Sr.'s temper and the conditions in Africa at the time it may well have been the right decision but for Obama to claim that he was fatherless because of his Father's lack of personal moral responsiblity is ridiculous.

Jackson is a relic, and he's pissed because his model of "activism"(find a TV camera, cry racism, and watch donations funnel into your personal bank account, also known as the "Rainbow/Push Coalition") is over and done with.
Oh well, I stepped in the minefield after all.
