We are monkeys, all

The thing which makes us all uniquely human is our ability to call each other monkeys while denying our own essential monkey-ness.  Both bonobos and chimpanzees share 98.4% of their genetic make-up with Homo sapiens. They are more closely related genetically to us than they are to gorillas.  Humans, chimpanzees, bonobos, and gorillas are often placed in the same taxonomic family, Hominidae (though one can still find taxonomies that separate humans) and, of course, none of the apes, Hominoidea (humans, chimpanzees, bonobos, gorillas, orangs and gibbons) are technically monkeys at all.

Nope, you’ve got to have a tail to be a monkey.  If it’s prehensile then it’s a “New World” monkey from Central or South America.  “Old World” Monkeys do not have prehensile tails.

Then there are the lemurs.  If monkeys took to insulting other monkeys, they’d be calling one another lemurs.  Lemurs can only be found on Madagascar, because we monkeys have of way of taking out primate competitors if given the opportunity.  Lemurs managed to hide out on Madagascar for a while but we’re getting closer and close to getting the job done every day.

There is nothing inherently inferior about a monkey any more than there is anything inherently inferior about being tall or short, black or white; male or female.  The use of monkey as a pejorative says more about human ignorance than it does about primate taxonomy.  Name calling, the ad hominem attack, is born out of the inability to come up with anything intelligent to say.  It’s the reflexive reptilian response punctuated by that uniquely human ability to form words into sentences.

I am a monkey as were my fathers before me.  And I thank God every day that I wasn’t born a lemur…

The science is irrelevant here. In a nation where an overwhelming majority of adults do not believe in evolution, to call someone a monkey is still an insult. It's the equivalent of calling someone a lower life form. See my earlier post for more on this issue: http://tpmcafe.talkingpointsmemo.com/talk/2008/06/on-political-monkeys.php

WTF are you on about? Why should we care about monkies?

I'm a flea-bit peanut monkey. All my friends are junkies.

(Monkey Man, Rolling Stones)

"An overwhelming majority of adults do not believe in evolution" is a bit of hyperbole, no?

According to a 2007 Gallup poll, when asked "Do you believe in evolution?" 53% of the respondents answered it was definitely true or probably true while 44% answered that it was probably false or definitely false.

I can't believe it's even that close, but at least it's tipping in favor of evolution.

OK, now you've hit on a pet peeve of mine, so excuse me while I shout.

WE ARE NOT MONKEYS!!!

We are primates. We are great apes. We are not monkeys. Chimpanzees, gorillas, and bonobos are also not monkeys.

I blame it on the so-called "Scopes Monkey Trial" that the majority of people today think that monkeys and primates are the same thing.

Rant over, for now.

Ben,

The article clearly states what you are ranting about:

"and, of course, none of the apes, Hominoidea (humans, chimpanzees, bonobos, gorillas, orangs and gibbons) are technically monkeys at all."

Titles can hardly capture the nuance of the full article, often intentionally so in order to get the reader's attention. You know this, I'm sure.

In the larger scope of things, there is a shocking ignorance among Americans, at least, of what "science" is. Many think it is just a belief system, and take umbrage that science claims the high ground. What they are missing is that science is based on transparency and verifiability, so yes, in the areas where those conditions exist, it is superior, thank you very much.

With leadership like Mike Huckabee stating that when the Bible and science don't agree he sides with the Bible, it is no wonder we are in trouble.

By the way, why are we talking about monkeys?

Yeah, I'm afraid my "rage" prevented me from reading past the first line.

/me looks mildly ashamed

As for why we're talking about monkeys, I guess it's because it's Friday.

pssst... Ben, your IRC is showing.

I believe there are those who are upset about equating persons of color to simians.

The original poster appears to me to be confessing to the monkey (Great Ape) in his own wood pile and, perhaps, believes this somehow softens the epithet.

Either that or he hates lemurs.

Fuck lemurs.

(Yeah, I finally read all the internet-backstory to understand this post)
