Tim Russert - Farewell
Tim: I say, farewell, farewell to you, the good and faithful servant. Your life blessed mine. You never failed to answer my e-mails. You made me proud to share our generation together.
You gave a new meaning to the phrase, "public service." You showed me how to embrace and honor my father (now 85), to recognize his greatness. You did this for an entire country that is just now coming to terms with a transition of one generation (ours) to the next (our children).
You demonstrated that asking tough questions of our leaders is Citizenship 101. You showed us that the truth is always better than the untruth. Or, in the words of the late Carl R. Rogers, "The facts are always friendly."
I thank God that you have made me better, even as imperfect as I am. Farewell, farewell, farewell good friend.

Tim Russert gave us much, much more than thoughtful analysis of the issues before us; his life was a gift, by example, of steadfast integrity and hope. Perhaps in the detailed review of his career, in clips, other broadcast journalists and their corporate masters will learn that coverage geared soley to ratings is over-rated -- and that, ironically, ratings can also be achieved by excellence.
Thank you, Mr. Russert. What will Sunday morning be without you?

Tim Russert was a very talented journalist and an impressive media personality, but he was successful within a controlled media machine. I gravitated to TPM, Dem Now and other news outlets because it became clear to me that people like Russert weren't telling the whole story.
That said, it is a shame for his family that he died so awfully young.

Donal - For me, the solution was not to gravitate from one to the other. Rather, I choose to widen my media base to include both the old and the new. Each has its strengths and its weaknesses.
