The Queen is Dead. Long Live the (VP) Queen?
I am speechless right now. I feel like a child waiting for Christmas to come. Mom, can we close the polls NOW?
I feel as if I am in St. Peter's Square waiting for the white smoke and the words, "Habemus Papa."
Feel free to add your own metaphors...
Here is one that may that may not immediately come to mind. Barack Obama is a Romanov and Hillary Clinton is like Rasputin. Just when you think that she is gone for good, she comes back.
The latest incarnation? She sheds the garb of Presidential nominee puts on the pants suit of VP.
I would have never thought this possible a few months ago. Certainly not during Bosnia-gate, her PA bitterness huffaraw, or her New Math. Certainly not while Obama was the Knight in Shining Armor who dazzled us with his rhetoric and his (as characterized by Peggy Noonan) "Too Cool for School" aura.
But a funny thing happened on the way to the nomination (let me know if you sensed this too). Around the time of PA, Obama suit of armor has dulled a little. His speeches have become less soaring. He silently donned a flag pin. His attacks on McCain sound more like conventional politics. (I'm hoping that he lets it fly in tonight's speech, but I suspect that if he attacks McCain, the speech will be closer to Earth than Heaven.)
For better or worse, Obama has become a more conventional politician. Ironically, the result of this is that having Clinton on the ticket is less heretical now. The decision comes down to a pragmatic, rather than idealogical calculus. This is why I believe that if she plays nice and works hard to convince her constituency to vote for Obama, the Dream/Nightmnare ticket will become a reality.
This duet of harmoney/cacophony will take some negotiation and extensive strategery. AND, it will take some real discipline from Bill Clinton. He will have to play a significantly smaller role, and Hillary will have to keep Bubba on a tight leash.
But I think The Ticket will happen.
Mom, maybe I can wait a little longer to open my present...

No. No. A thousand times, NO.
Hillary is the worst possible VP candidate for Obama. So much baggage. So much hatred for her on the right.
Just say NO.

I hear you. Every emotional fiber in my body scrams in solidarity.
Certainly, there will have to be some extra special vetting and strategy sessions involved if HRC is VP. On the other hand, the Democratic VP field is pretty thin. I also think that political memory is short, and that a month or so of feel good Kumbaya events will make that past a distant memory.
Additionally, even if there is baggage, the sheer number of Democratic supporters will swamp the Republicans.

Hillary will demand to be called the Co-President since she garnered almost half of the primary election popular votes.

One thing about Obama is that he is comfortable in his own skin. I remember the CA debate when Clinton was pressing him to not just condemn Farrakhan's remarks, but to repudiate them (or vice versa). It just took him a couple of seconds, but he agreed. End of story.
I think that in an Obama Administration, it will be clear who is President.

How will she explain this being played ad nauseum?

I was just kidding? I was just trying to get elected? I was telling the truth, but since I'm on the ticket now everything is okay since I'll babysit the President?

There have been strange, seeminly non-sensical, yet winning combinations. Two examples that come to mind:
Kennedy/Johnson (apparently they didn't like each other)
Clinton/Gore (didn't make logical sense, but Clinton pulled the trigger, and the rest was history).

Of course Kerry absolutely hated Edwards' guts too, but whatever.

There you go. It is appropriate that the image you chose is Lincoln's. He didn't fear having rivals in his administration.

Kennedy/Johnson was not nonsensical. Johnson was one of the party leaders and Kennedy needed him to help win the South. And yes, they were not exactly two peas in a pod.
Clinton/Gore on the other hand. To this day I don't get it. :)

Personally, I like the idea of Hillary as Queen. ("In place of the Dark Lord you will set up a Queen. And I shall not be dark, but beautiful and terrible as the Morning and the Night ...All shall love me and despair!")
But I'm not wild about her as VP. And -- more to the point -- the Obama campaign has been sending unambiguous signals that it's not gonna happen.
Here's a link to a discussion in hrebendorff's thread that explains why not. Short version: Obama campaign is leaking what its "conditions" would be for considering Hillary. And the real point of the "conditions," pretty clearly, is to offer an explanation of why they're not going to consider her.

A (VP) Queen would be a Crown Princess.

I just finished listening to Clinton's speech. Why is she being such an ovary? If she wants to be VP, she certainly didn't help herself.
