The Fire-Breather and Manhattan II

One of my congressional heroes, Rep. Bob Wexler of Florida, talked on The Bill Press Show this morning about Sen. John McCain’s ridiculous proposal to open America’s coastline to offshore drilling (Note: In keeping with the flippity-floppity nature of his campaign, McCain today said that whether coasts were opened for drilling would be left for the individual states to decide, an obvious attempt to mitigate any damage to his prospects in California. But why did he bother? He hasn’t a snowball’s chance there, anyway.).

Wexler, whose book Fire-Breathing Liberal is an engaging account of a true progressive’s career in the U.S. House of Representatives, said that, instead, he favored a Manhattan II approach, where, as the U.S. did with its efforts to produce an atomic bomb, our finest scientific minds are given all the resources at the government’s disposal to harness alternative energy sources with an eye to a permanent end of our reliance on foreign and, for that matter, domestic oil.

What Sen. Barack Obama outlined in his energy address today sounds similar to Wexler’s proposal, except Obama compared his all-out energy research effort to the race to the moon that resulted from John F. Kennedy’s challenge. But, regardless of the comparison used or what the project might be dubbed, such an effort is needed to free us from the bonds of oil and the profiteers who peddle it, be they abroad or here in the U.S.

Certainly, considerable funds would need to be available for a matter of such import. Too, $300 million --- the amount John McCain proposes giving the inventor of the superdooper battery --- would likely prove a drop in the bucket. When you think about the materials, facilities and manhours that might be involved in such a far-reaching effort --- some of which would likely bear little or no benefit --- the final price tag could prove mind-boggling. But, unlike foolish, unprovoked wars abroad, some tasks are priceless. A successful Manhattan II would save lives, not cost them. It would reduce pollution, help preserve our coastlines and save millions in healthcare related to respiratory problems.

Simply put, it’s a no-brainer. We should start tomorrow.

As an aside, I would like to make a non-Swiftian modest proposal: Bob Wexler for vice president. As a practicing Jew from Florida and a bona fide progressive whose ideals match those of Sen. Obama (and because he is one of my personal favorites), the potential has a certain appeal. He’s probably a bit untested, having been in Congress only since 1996. Still, he is, as the title of his book suggests, a fire-breathing liberal.

And, for sure, we need more like him.

I have long supported a Manhattan- or Moonshot-style program of focusing the sharpest minds and a near-blank check on developing alternative energy sources. Don't tell me we can't harness quantum singularities! It's not only theoretically possible, the Romulans have been doing it for years.

Maybe we could steal some state secrets from the Romulans?!? :-)

Their phone calls and emails are being tapped even as we speak.

Yes, but their hacking into the computers of congressmen looking for lists of Romulan dissidents.

You mean Cardassian spies.

I don't want anyone to be chosen for office because they are a practicing Jew or any other kind of religious involvement. I've had enough of this shit. Practice religion on your own time and do "the people's business" without sharing your superstitions.

I certainly don't vote with anyone's religion --- or non-religion --- in mind. At the same time, I think it's naive to ignore the relevance of religion to some voters.

Sad commentary on the human mind to keep on with this crap, and making a choice FOR someone because of their religion is as stupid as people voting against Obama because they think he is a Muslim. Buy into one sack of crap, and you get the whole harvest--mindlessness and superstition.

So impressed with Wexler at the RBC hearing re: Florida's quasi Primary Election. Will research his record to obtain facts about his processes and actions on issues, et al.
Thanks for post.

Note: Sen. Evan Bayh (D-IN) has stated he wants VP and hinted he was being 'vetted'. Personally, do not think he is a good choice for Obama's VP.
Today at news conference Obama said his first consideration for VP is who would make good POTUS if something happened to him. And I definitely do not want Bayh as POTUS.

I like the idea of the Manhattan II project for alternative energy. How would we keep the unpleasant oil profiteers from merely switching over and working their wicked ways on new technology? Also, how could we insure that there wouldn't be the usual bloated and thievery based "contracts" for goods and services for the project? A great idea. I do think that we should plan to prevent the same old junk before it happens. A few honest people with good computers to head it might help. I am so sick of corruption in my government---esp. after the fleecing we've taken on U.S. contractors in Iraq. But, good idea!
