The called me everything but pretty

The other day I posted  "The Sword of Damocles" here at TPMCafe. "The Sword of Damocles" was a speculation about the famous/infamous, true/false, existent/inexistent, Michelle "tape/dvd".

I was gratified by the tremendous response I received. The TPM forum is a unique opportunity to take the pulse of any issue and anyone who earns his bread and cheese in political speculation has to be grateful for the opportunity.

That said, I really had to dodge the flung dung.

They called me everything but pretty.

I am pleased to share with my readers some of the choicest stuff that that was tossed my way over the "Sword" and a follow up post to it, which I'll reprise below. Enjoy.

God, Seaton, you're a fucking idiot. I NEVER call people that.

From one Obama supporter: Fuck off!

I've suspected for quite a while that you're an intellectually dishonest jackass.

This crap is just wacky with no entertainment value. Except for the freakshow.

Toss him a chicken, see what he does with it.

Seaton, I don't wish to put too fine a point on it but you, sir, are a fool.

David, you are a weasel, and either phony or demented.

Are there any DVD/Videos rumored to be out there which reveal that David Seaton is a convicted pedophile, who can not return to the USA.

So much for the "new politics".

If you are a friend, please don't be upset by any of this, I'm certainly not. "Sticks and stones," as we used to chant as tots. The Obamites haven't gotten around  to sticks and stones yet... but, only time will tell.

In fact, the above abuse is music to my ears. It means that my probing has connected solidly with an exposed nerve and that a fruitful path of investigation has been revealed to me.

In fact, the reaction I received to my post convinces me more than anything else that there is something to this rumor.

Or perhaps I should say that it proves that there is a tremendous fear among Obamites that there is something out there of equal caliber and destructiveness.

There is a famous Italian saying about certain rumors; "Si non e vero, e ben trovato", it means: if it isn't true, it's well made up. It sounds true because it is made up of many elements that are probable or plausible in themselves.

For example, if we were going to invent scurrilous rumors about John McCain, we would probably invent things like his having incipient Alzheimer or wearing diapers. Because of his great age, some people might believe it.

However, if we spread it about that he was a shoe fetishist or a child molester or that he took drugs, or often missed his naps, very few would find that credible, again because of his great age.

I really can't imagine either McCain or his supporters mobilizing masses of people to refute any of these inventions, either the credible or the incredible.

In the case of Michelle Obama, this tape rumor is either true or it isn't.... and if it isn't, it will die a natural death, certainly long before November.

However, the hysterical reaction of the Obama campaign and the Obamites in general makes me smell a rat. It proves that as Maureen Dowd writes in the NYT.
“Michelle,” as one political observer puts it, “is a target-rich environment.”
The Obamites reaction will certainly prove to the Rovian, neo-Swiftboaters that they are close to pay dirt.

To anyone with insight, I think it is perfectly obvious that Barack Obama is Hawaii's answer to Tony Blair... a phony: a faux-progressive manipulator. I am sure that Obama's role models are Blair and Reagan... passed through Dick Daley.

The way Barack Obama needlessly sold out the Palestinians the other day at AIPAC proves to me that he'll do the same on health or anything else. He makes John Kerry's "flip flopping" look Gibraltar-like in its steadiness. Except for bare faced Blairian spin, like his race speech, I have yet to see even one moment of genuine political courage in his entire career.

Every day as the campaign intensifies more people are going to be catching on to this and as sympathetic (dog like?) as the media has been up till now in their treatment of Obama, some will be tempted to hold his feet to the fire and obviously the Obama campaign wants to intimidate them. The Spanish call this "curing yourself in health" or "applying a bandage before you are cut".

Noemi Klein writes in the Guardian:
Barack Obama waited just three days after Hillary Clinton pulled out of the race to declare, on CNBC: "Look. I am a pro-growth, free-market guy. I love the market." Demonstrating that this is no mere spring fling, he has appointed the 37-year-old Jason Furman, one of Wal-Mart's most prominent defenders, to head his economic team. On the campaign trail, Obama blasted Clinton for sitting on the Wal-Mart board and pledged: "I won't shop there." For Furman, however, Wal-Mart's critics are the real threat: the "efforts to get Wal-Mart to raise its wages and benefits" are creating "collateral damage" that is "way too enormous and damaging to working people and the economy ... for me to sit by idly and sing Kum Ba Ya in the interests of progressive harmony".
She was immediately brought to book by an Obamite calling him/herself, "Watching You", citing chapter and verse of "The Audacity of Hope" and warning Ms. Klein to "be careful".

I'm beginning to wish Obama does win, just for the fun I'll have taking the piss out of his starry eyed supporters as he triangulates the conservatives on every issue in true, Clinton (Bill)/Blair fashion and slows down and dilutes every transformational initiative from the left of the Democratic Congress and Senate.

I am beginning to think that I might have as much fun with Obama as I have had with Bush.

If McCain wins, I know I will disagree with him most of the time, but I don't think I'll feel the sort of contempt I feel for Bush or Blair... or Obama.

Back to the rumorology and its effect on the election.

This election is about Barack Obama. How he wins it or how he loses it.

In a certain sense McCain is an "innocent" bystander.

The center of my thesis is that while McCain can't "win", Obama can lose it and the weakest link he has is his wife Michelle. That is because she is a real person, with real opinions, who has spoken her mind without calculating the effect her words might have years later on her husband's fortunes.

She is also a person who belongs to what, in the United States at least, might be called the left.... and the USA is a solidly right wing country by world standards.

With much media complicity, Obama has been able to distance himself from embarrassing associations... up till now. Obama can throw Wright, Trinity, Johnson or the Palestinian people under the bus, but if he tries to throw Michelle Robinson under the bus, she'll cut his effing heart out.

As to the rumor itself... there is one detail that is either true, or the work of master rumor monger: that is the bit about Michelle's denouncing Bill Clinton's inaction on the Rwanda genocide. That is a story that surfaced a couple of months before her supposed speech to the Rainbow/Push conference in 2004 and which quickly dropped out of the public eye, it is a political junky's collector's item, it is certainly something too old and too obscure for a crude forger to either understand or use today

In fact, the reaction I received to my post convinces me more than anything else that there is something to this rumor.

So you won't be offended then if I ask you when you quit beating your wife and strangling puppies?

Yawn.

While you have in the past submitted posts that I found provocative and interesting I think you are losing your objectivity over this Michelle tape rumor. Perhaps there was some small value in one post on the topic but three is just the lowest form of rumor mongering. I say that as a Hillary supporter.

Exactly what is the purpose in so aggressively pushing a rumor of a tape that there is no verifiable evidence exists nor evidence that which it supposedly exhibits has even occurred? The only purpose I can see is to defame by innuendo.

"In fact, the above abuse is music to my ears. It means that my probing has connected solidly with an exposed nerve and that a fruitful path of investigation has been revealed to me."

If someone had put up a post detailing Barack and Michelle Obama's participation in child porn distribution or human trafficking, they would have received comments along the lines of the ones your post generated. Would that mean they were justified in concluding "my probing has connected solidly with an exposed nerve and that a fruitful path of investigation has been revealed to me." ???

Exactly. Shit sticks because it's sticky, irrespective of the nature of the target. Hammering away at a slanderous rumor says less about the people taking umbrage than it does about your own desire to see it be proved true.

If you want to follow a fruitful path of investigation, then perhaps try investigating the supposed tape. 'Investigating' by eliciting a response on a forum isn't journalism or detective work, it's an idiot's pursuit.

In case you think I was seriously questioning you, you needn't bother answering - the question was rhetorical and meant to point out the absurdity of your reasoning. Be gone, thou blabberizer!

The Common Loon

Everywhere you turn, you run into loon pictures: license plates, door mats, canvas bags, t-shirts and bumper stickers all bear witness to 'our love of loons'. Almost everyone in Maine has thrilled to the sight of a live loon, and many of us have heard their haunting songs. In spite of our fascination with loons, we really don't know much about them.

Loons are one of the oldest groups of flying birds still living. The first loons, virtually unchanged, appeared over 60 million years ago! These birds have become masters at adapting to climate and environmental changes. If you have ever heard the cry of the loon, it is not hard to envision the primitive world they once lived in. The Common Loon

The Common Loon (Gavia immer) of today is a fairly large bird, averaging eleven pounds. Its wings stretch 50 inches from tip to tip, and its body is over twenty-eight inches long. It has a strong black bill for catching fish, crayfish, insects and even snails. Its bright red eyes are capable of seeing at depths below fifteen feet, and its strong legs are located far back on its body for maximum speed in the water. Unlike most flying birds, the loon has solid bones which enable it to dive to depths of up to 150 feet, although its dives are usually more shallow.

Loons are very awkward on land because their legs are located at the back portion of their body. They only come ashore for two reasons: to mate and to nest. Loons mate for life and spend their summers together raising their chicks. In the fall and winter months, the adult loons fly to separate wintering locations until courtship time the next spring. Usually two olive green eggs with dark spots are laid in a nest built of grasses and ferns. Nests are located near the water's edge and are often built on an island to limit possible predation. Loons return to nest sites year after year if left undisturbed. Once the chicks hatch they take to the water almost immediately, but they tire easily and soon learn that their parents' backs are great for resting on. Toward the end of summer, loons can be seen "chasing" their offspring up and down the lake trying to get them to fly. Loons need to flap across nearly a quarter of a mile of water to attain flight! Once in the air, they are capable of traveling great distances.

Young loons are left by their parents at the end of summer to find their own way. The young birds will stay at the lake until it is almost time for the water to freeze. They then fly to the coast to spend the next three or four years. At this time they are a drab gray color and their body rids itself of excess salt through a nasal salt gland found commonly in ocean birds. The juvenile birds eat cod, mackerel and other ocean fishes and crabs. The young birds must compete with the adult birds for food during the winter months, as the adults migrate to the ocean while the lakes are frozen, The adults are hard to distinguish from the juvenile birds in winter as they too are drab gray. The mature birds will regain their summer attire before migration time the next spring.

Although loons have managed to adapt to many changes in their environment over the years, their future is not certain. Man is rapidly populating lakes where few people were found. In places where man is a frequent visitor, loons sometimes fail to return if their nests are too close to human activity, or if they are frequently disturbed while in their nests. Loons, like other wildlife, suffer from other man-made problems such as oil spills, acid rain, plastics and even garbage. Accumulation of garbage attracts gulls and raccoons, who in turn feed on loon eggs and chicks. But even with all these problems, loons seem to be adapting. They have been seen nesting on alternative nest sites in highly populated lakes. Some have even begun using artificial nest platforms designed for their use. Loons that live on the more densely populated lakes are becoming less fearful of man and don't flush as easily as those on lakes with few humans.

For the true loon lover there is an annual festival sponsored by the Maine Audubon Society Wildlife Program. Normally held during the summer months, this festival is replete with loon crafts and even has a loon calling contest for those who have perfected their loon yodels, hoots and whistles. For information on the festival contact the Maine Audubon Society Wildlife Program.

General Description

North American Range
Common Loons are large water birds with thick necks and sharp bills. In breeding plumage, both sexes have striking black heads with white collars, white breasts, and black backs with white checkering. Adults in non-breeding plumage are brownish gray with white throats and breasts, partial white collars, and white around the eyes. Under-parts are white in all plumages. Juvenile plumage is similar to non-breeding.

Habitat

In the breeding season, Common Loons can be found on large secluded lakes (at least 49 acres in size) with plenty of room for takeoff, deep inlets and bays, and a good supply of small fish. These lakes can be in forested areas in mountains or lowlands. Islands, logs, and floating debris attract nesting loons. In winter, Common Loons are usually found on salt water, typically in shallow areas close to shore. They occasionally winter on fresh water.

Behavior

In winter, Common Loons are solitary while feeding, but they congregate in loose flocks at night. Before diving, they sometimes swim along the surface with heads partly submerged, looking for prey. When swimming under water, they use only their feet for propulsion.

Diet

Common Loons generally eat small fish up to 10' long, and also take crustaceans, mollusks, aquatic insects, leeches, and frogs. They may also occasionally eat aquatic plants. They swallow small prey underwater and bring larger prey to the surface.

Nesting

The male and female build the nest very near the water, on the shore or on a small island. The nest, a mound of grasses, twigs, and reeds, is partly hidden by surrounding vegetation, and is often reused from year to year. Common Loons will also use man-made floating nest-sites. The female lays two eggs, and both parents incubate. The young leave the nest only a few days after hatching and can dive and swim underwater at 2-3 days of age. Both parents continue to feed and tend the young, which sometimes ride on their backs.

Migration Status

Common Loons are medium-distance migrants. They migrate singly or in small flocks, just offshore low over the water. Over land, they fly higher. Peaks for the fall migration are from late August to late November. In the spring, peaks are from late April to early May.

Conservation Status

It is not known if the population of Common Loons in Washington is increasing, stable, or decreasing. Common Loons have declined in Washington in the last century, but there are no good data on their historic distribution in the state. Records of known nesting have increased in the past 15 years, but this may be due to increased sampling efforts. Because there are known threats and the species is recognized as vulnerable, Common Loons are classified as a state 'sensitive species' by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. The Gap Analysis Project also lists it as a species at risk. Pesticides, mercury contamination, and lead poisoning are all potential threats. Oils spills are also a threat, especially since loons dive rather than fly when they encounter oil slicks. Common Loons avoid densely populated areas, thus development of lakes and the resulting increase in boat traffic have resulted in a decrease in available habitat. Jet skis are a major disturbance to loons in that they are fast, loud, and can maneuver in shallow areas where loons nest. The decline of Common Loons continent-wide has aroused extensive public concern and action, and breeding conservation programs are in effect over much of their range. Many populations have responded to this effort. In Washington, there are 20 confirmed Common Loon nesting locations, and 8-10 nests were found each year in the 1990s. Common Loons do not breed until they are 5 years old, and often not until 7 or older. This delayed breeding results in low productivity, making it harder for the population to rebound from declines.

When and Where to Find in Washington

In winter, Common Loons can commonly be found on marine bays and inlets along the coast. They can also be found on nearby fresh water, albeit less frequently. During migration they are numerous on Puget Sound, Hood Canal, and Willapa Bay. They can also be found on large bodies of water in eastern Washington during migration, and in smaller numbers in winter. Common Loons have nested recently on lakes and reservoirs in Ferry, Okanogan, Douglas, Chelan, Whatcom, and King Counties. Non-breeding adults can be found in the summer in the north Puget Sound area, on the outer coast, and on lakes and reservoirs of Central Washington.

LOL!!!

I too love the loon--they are one of my favorite memories of summers in the Boundary Water Canoe Area of northern Minnesota. Nice folks those people in MN. Oh, and Garrison Keillor did a very funny bit on his show last night that feature a young woman science students who was doing corneal transplants on walleye and turned into a fish fresh walleye caught in the BWCA lakes are delicious!

I am only 5'4" and less than 110 pounds but used to drive a muscle car (a stick shift Cougar without power steering) and am so glad to hear your story about that engine.

Lot's of fond memories--thanks y'all. This old girl is going to have her martini now.

You know, I've recently been working on old Chevrolet cars. Something interesting is that most of them come with either a 235 or 216 inch straight six engine. Some of the later models came with a 265 V-8 but those are pretty rare. A nice thing about the engines is that they all pretty much took the same carburetor.

This is the single barrel Rochester. By now, I have been required to rebuild a ton of these suckers and I have a few tips that might be helpful.

First, every single one of them uses the same rebuild kit. After tracking down half a dozen specific model numbers I figured it out. Just tell the Nappa guy they are all the same ^^%*% thing - give me one. He'll probably respond - but I need a year and model number. Tell him to pick a 1953 Bel-Air with a 235 and it should do the trick.

These suckers seem to need a rebuild every couple of years, but this also might be a result of the entire fuel system being 50 years old. Usually you just need to clean out the jets and replace the stop-ball and spring. Interestingly enough - once I lost the spring and didn't have a rebuild kit handy. After disassembling half-a-dozen ball point pens, I found a spring from one that seemed to work great. Ultimately I replaced it with the correct part, but I was proud of my alternative-engineering prowess, so thought I'd take a moment to brag about it.

Beyond that, I'd just like to say that the 235 is a brutally solid engine. We bought an old 1955 (series 1) 3100 truck, and got it on the road. After hauling several cars and 2 tractors, the thing finally blew a head gasket. When we took the heads off, it turns out that the engine had been running with a quarter-inch hole in the top the #6 cylinder and a stuck valve. And it still hauled like crazy! This actually is the first motor that we've tried to do a complete rebuild on. It's almost on the road now. We replaced the pistons with .30 over stock, redone the whole bottom end, and repainted or powder coated most everything.

It's back in the truck now, and just awaiting a couple of extra hoses. Hopefully mu buddy gets off his butt and we can get it done next weekend - the damn thing is taking up half my garage! As a computer programmer, you can never actually touch what you create with your hands - it's fun sometimes to work on a physical system such as a motor. It's pretty cool that there are so many projects that can be found so inexpensively in the area.

The motor really had a hole in the top of the #6 piston - I always make that mistake (calling pistons cylinders) dunno why.

Oh God DAMN! Nothing says summer to me like German Potato Salad. The combination of bacon, green onion and vinegar....mmmmm...I could live on that stuff.

Oh, yeah! You know, Carol, we have some excellent German food down here in Texas. Lots of little old German towns--New Braunfels, Boerne, Fredericksburg, Schulenburg, Luckenbach, Gruene.... Here in Texas, we pair up German potato salad and beer with outstanding barbecue. Summers get hot and hellish here, but we distract ourselves from it with delicious food and beer!

Thanks. I don't think I've ever seen this recipe, corn starch to bind/thicken dressing is new to me. I'll make it this week. Now, about that B-B-Q sauce!

That is one fucking scary salad recipe.

WOW! Thanks so much. Um, not to press my luck but do you know where can obtain good homemade ranch dressing recipe? And are there any recipes u are seeking? Again, thanks.

I remember my mom making it when I was a kid. Requires mayonaise and buttermilk. No recipe, sorry.

I've read more intriguing funeral programs. That being said, why is it that when people react with justifiable anger to some inbred Obama smear merchant - the smearer usually shrugs his shoulders while sarcastically saying, "New Politics?" What horsehit.. Its akin to picking a fight with someone and being utterly shocked when they turn around and kick you in the fucking teeth. Also, your sentiments about welcoming an Obama presidency, even if it is for "I told you so" purposes - is as natural as an oral bowel movement. The last thing you want is an Obama presidency, look at yourself, still pushing that "Whitey" smear for Christs sake.

Does anyone have ideas for a border plant for my front walkway? It's shaded by a large Cherry tree. I have day lilies there now, but I don't like the look. Too large - they grow over the walkway. I think something more compact would be nice.

avatar

What type of soil and climate?

It's mostly clay, but the soil is really well-conditioned, the beds have been worked for many years, religiously. I live outside of DC. Good rain, warm from April through September.

avatar

I'm assuming your going for some color as well as coverage?

Actually, I don't care for the yellow so much. I'm shifting over to more of a blue, purple, pink tone now - even deep reds. Looking for perennials. Something lower and more compact, so it doesn't grow over the walkway.

avatar

Hmmm. I'm trying to find my gardening book as I'm just not that familiar with what's best for your climate. Note: When buying bedding plants a friend got some beautiful black pansies. They have yellow and violet centers. Gorgeous and different. Just thought I'd mention it as I'd never seen these before...

Alkaline or acidic soil?

If I made and ate that potato salad I would not longer be able to think about getting one of those belts that Michelle wears so well. G'night dear friends.

avatar

Suppose I copy this thread and put it in as a comment every time one of people tries to blog? You going to think this shit is funny then. The man has a right to speak and find an audience if he can unharrassed. Shame on you.

Free world and all.

avatar

You got it. Nobody appointed you people guardians of what's proper discourse here. Go check out kgb's latest blog and see if I'm kidding. You're like a little lynch mob. We'll get Josh in on this if we have to.

There's the old story of Lyndon Johnson wanting to spread the rumor that his opponent was a pig-fucker. Johnson's campaign manager protested, "Lyndon, you know he doesn't do that!" Johnson replied, "I know. I just want to make him deny it."

Maybe some of us are tired of Obama havin' to deny he's a terrorist, havin' to deny he's Jeremiah Wright, havin' to deny, deny, and further deny all sorts of stupid shit just because others lack the basic decency to refrain from using the pig-fucker strategy.

And maybe some of us just like sharin' recipes, or car talk, or whatever.

This latest post from Seaton is basically a slapped-together re-run of his previous two posts, so it ain't worth much, but I've gone ahead and dropped a little change in the ol' TrollBowl ...

http://my.barackobama.com/page/outreach/view/main/TrollBowl

I love this feature! And TPM is well-represented there. What a lovely idea.

avatar

Ignore him if you want, but if you keep trying to stifle him, you'll get it back when you post. Nobody died and made you king of what can be blogged here and what can't. Obama doesn't need that kind of help.

Responding to posts does not, in any way, prevent people from posting.

avatar

You know what I'm talking about. And you know who is doing it. Block posting recipes and other boilerplate to kill a thread is not "responding" to a post. If you want to see what it's like to be on the receiving end, just let me know. Facism and McCarthyism and repression stinks in all its forms. If you don't like Seaton, ignore him. Don't recommend him. That's what I do. But get over the idea that you're going to trash his threads.

Hey, I responded with serious sentiment. :) I'm just pointing out that you can't call it censorship. Beyond that, just as he's free to post, people are entitled to find it without merit and respond as such. He can still find his audience, they can still recommend it, and he can still respond to substantive responses. It's hyperbolic to white-knight against this as people somehow denying him something. You can call it immature or irresponsible use of reply privileges, but it ain't McCarthyism.

avatar

Look at your reminder post. :) I wouldn't screw up your sockObamaRIP post for anything. That was a real victory that deserves to be celebrated. You have power here. Use it right. Don't hang with the punks.

I appreciate your posting in a month's old post of mine, but I'm really not bothered by it. I don't know if you get the point I was trying to make in my responses to you, though, so I'll leave it be. :)

Now this person understands, and doesn't take the bait.

I am making your portrait.

Despite everything in Obama's favor, most of you are very afraid of what might be out there and covering your ears and singing loud.... maybe it will all go away.

I will protest all racist sewer rats, such as Seaton, every time they try to spread their lies and hate speech. He deserves the same treatment as all those who try to deny that the Holocaust happened.

avatar

Go check out your latest post. If you want more, keep trying to suppress free speech at TPM with block posts. Read the ground rules for the site. Personally, I think block posting to harass a blogger is grounds for banning you.

Now this person understands, and doesn't take the bait.

I am making your portrait.

Despite everything in Obama's favor, most of you are very afraid of what might be out there and are covering your ears and singing very loud.... maybe it will all go away.

avatar

Hate speech is not free speech, you twit. Seaton has posted outright racist comments on TPM for several months. You can hug a KKK type all you want to, and proclaim that they should not encounter any protests, or resistance. I have learned from history. You coddle that sort of vermin at your peril. Never again. I love the scene in the Blues Brothers where they drive through and scatter the American Nazi demonstration.

You just go on with your smart self and do that.

avatar

Check out your last blog post and think about whether you want your next one to look like that. The man has a right to be heard. If you think he doesn't, take it up with Josh. If you people keep block posting to stifle free speech, you're going to get your block posts back the next time you post. Just a simple cause and effect machine. You decide.

Julian,

Haven't you just become the vigilante that you so despise in others?

I am confused by your statements: Is free speech at TPM for everyone or just for the ones who post blogs?

It seems to me that when someone posts freely, others can respond freely.

I understand that you find certain responses tasteless, but why are you policing this? And why are you dealing punishments out?

I'm just trying to understand.

avatar

It's the block posts, designed to kill the thread I object to. They are designed to keep anyone from engaging Mr. Seaton seriously. And they have started using the block posts against other posters they don't agree with, too. The idea is to run people like Seaton, Perez and others off. I'm not going to explain again. Just a clockwork now. Block post to a blog to disrupt the thread, and you'll get the same block post back the next time you blog here. Automatic.

Julian,
You are discovering what Obamania is all about: it is a strange form of fascism for wimps.

Julian,

I don't know who or what you are nor what you want. But it is clear to me that your going around block-posting on others' blogs doesn't help your case that people shouldn't do just that.

Everyone here has a right (whether you agree or not,) to interpret a blog as they wish; and to respond as they wish.

The job of censoring any abusive posting or punishing any poster is not yours; it is the site administrator's.

I was trying to understand and, given your tone-deaf response, now I do: This tantrum of yours brings you some kind of pleasure.

Carry on!

avatar

This is an unmoderated thread. If threads here were moderated, your friends wouldn't be able to try to squelch Mr. Seaton by block posts and I wouldn't have to intervene. I suspect you really don't understand what's going on, so I make an exception for you. I am assuming personal responsibility for protecting freedom of speech here. Try it some time. See how it feels.

Well, I responded to one of your posts, which of course I can't find now because it is too far down the line...I said I didn't think you were a troll, but that I wanted you to please give reasons for your negative opinions of Barack Obama.

You said specifically that you loathe him, but I just asked you to say why. You never answered. I think you saw my response because it was up for at least 3 days, and I kept going back to see if you answered.

You pick and choose your targets of outrage, but at least be honest enough to say you do.

Are you a victim? I think you are in your own mind because you ignore all of us who just want a conversation when you have nothing to offer.

Why do I loathe Obama?
Because I think he is Hawaii's answer to Tony Blair, a phony who will dilute and defuse all the progressive energy in the USA, that's why.

What happened, did some one from the No Quarter universe come to post on TPM?

That post made me yawn a lot.

I may need a nap after reading that tripe.

Yeah, why is it the trolls are always so boring? They either drop one line with a link, or they repost the same drivel over and over again like this guy.

Seaton is not my cup of tea, but he has a right to get on his soapbox just like the rest of us. He puts his name on his blog. Nobody has to read him if they don't want to.

This is as ridiculous as the shit in National Treasure and National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets. I swear, some people will never learn.

What reaction by the Obama campaign do you find "hysterical" exactly? You seem to be proposing a no win situation--I accuse you of something rather absurd and menacing, I spread this rumor all over the place, journalists begin to ask about this dark, menacing rumor, you say, "That is the way things work, some idiot on a blog makes something up and suddenly you're asking me about it." And then David Seaton (who is also you, confusingly enough) says OHMYGOD SEE YOU ARE GUILTY!!!!

The hysterical reaction from me, personally, is how incredibly racially weird it is for anyone to think that when well-educated black people get together they start talking in bad English and bashing whitey. Unless one's view of race comes entirely from Richard Pryor movies. In other words, it's so utterly absurd and deeply revealing about those who buy into it.

avatar

It's just FUD. Sowing fear, uncertainty and doubt. He's trying to drag your high. Just don't read the crap he posts. He is totally irrelevant to the outcome of this election. He should pick on me. I say Whitey all the time and white bread and mr. charlie and white duz and cracker and redneck and on and on.

You are an honest man Mr. Smith.

Mr. Seaton. Let's chat down here, late at night, now that others have had their chance to debate your piece.

* To anyone else still wandering this thread, please pass on if you wish - or stop by to listen or add in if that's your pleasure. My apologies for eating valuable electrons. I simply wished to stop by for a late night drink and a chat with Mr Seaton. Don't worry - I won't trigger any new "troll" debates or wind him up to too much with starry-eyed "Great Leader" talk.

For starters, Mr. Seaton, I'd just like to make sure that you're genuine about what you say, and haven't just been caught up in some counter-enthusiasm to Obama-world, which may have led you into saying things you truly don't feel. Fair?

To be fair to you, I went and read some of your blog - as well as your words here - and would like to take a moment to pull out of some of your slightly more "flamboyant" statements regarding this election. Just so you can understand some of what has troubled some of us.

1- You refer to "Obamania" as a "strange form of fascism for wimps." You "loathe" him, most particularly because you believe he is a "phony who will dilute and defuse all the progressive energy in the USA."

2- You recommend voting for McCain, albeit with a Dem majority to hold him in check. You find Obama to be "worse than George W. Bush," a "vile and unprincipled opportunist," and state that he is "either the most cynical demagogue who has ever graced our fair Republic, or bat shit crazy, or both."

3- You emphasize (and re-emphasize) the so-called "Whitey" tape, and debate whether Hillary, McCain, Rev. Wright or a 15 year old kid will launch it. Though you state quite clearly that it is (as yet) merely a "rumor," you felt that when some people responded in anger (as well as white-faced rage), this meant that you had "exposed a nerve" and this has encouraged you to believe the probability of its existence is even greater.

4- You find Obama's anti-rumor web-site to be somewhat "sinister," and ask whether this is "out and out intimidation."

5- You suggest it would be in America's best interests to have another 8 years of Bush, to serve the same purpose as 40 years of Franco did for Spain.

First, would you say that those are fair quotes? Just as a sampler of what might have set a few people off?

If so, as a "progressive," (which I believe you have claimed to be) I would ask the following questions:

- Regarding your last statement (above) in particular. There's harsh medicine Mr Seaton, and then there's this kind of thing. As a progressive, one who cares about people's health and well-being - all peoples - are you serious when you recommend the continuation of the Bush regime, to serve the purpose Franco served?

I know that you know very well that hundreds of thousands of people were killed (from say, 1936 on) during the Spanish Civil War and under Franco's rule, with perhaps 100,000 or more executed, women and gays deeply repressed, as well as about the support accepted & given to Hitler by Franco.

Do you seriously RECOMMEND this course for 300,000,000 Americans? If this is what Bush is, and McCain would continue, and you're voting to support it - are you actually saying that the suffering which would be inflicted on immigrants & Latinos, women & gays, the poor, those who speak up, in your PREFERRED scenario, is something we progressives should choose?

And since I believe you argue that the US's overseas wars and other activities have, are, and perhaps will, result in additional very large numbers of deaths in other nations - are you clear that you are recommending this course?

Considering the weight of the consequences for other people of the extension/worsening of the Bush (and future Bush-McCain) machinery, I would ask you to please precede this with the following -

Please write out, to your SPANISH audience, an explicit description of the sorts of activities and terrors you are recommending for the American people - and potentially, for citizens of other nations as well. And then please ask THEM for their direct feedback - especially from those who suffered under Franco - and ask whether they too whole-heartedly recommend this course.

- You list (with some enjoyment apparently) the insults thrown at you by various angrier (or ruder) members of TPM. In fact, you seem to take not only some pride in this, but believe that it CONFIRMS your view that the supposed tape's existence is made more probable.

First off, yes, as you listed, some people said harsh/rude things to you. Now. The mirror please. Review the sorts of words you have thrown at Senator Obama and at all those who support him. I've listed some above, but to recap - Vile. Unprincipled. Phony. The MOST cynical demagogue in 200+ years - or "bat-shit crazy" - or both. And most interesting to me, you throw the term "fascism" at - seemingly - all those who support Obama.

To begin, do you believe - as a rational man - accept that your readers should not ALSO feel increasingly confirmed in THEIR insults/opinions, as a result of your own choice of words?

I doubt you'll like this mirror Mr Seaton, if you are in fact a progressive man, who prides himself on his experience and judgment. But to stand in the midst of a nation which has welcomed you, Spain, and which lost so much blood to fascism, and then to throw THIS word - with all it means - at what are (for a very large part) young people (kids who get excited when they see sand-bags being filled) - are you SURE this is the proper weight you wish to put behind your punch?

Do note that YOU, Mr Seaton, used words such as vile, unprincipled, bat-shit crazy first. Most recently, you labelled 18 million or so people, many 18-20-22 year olds included, as fascists (albeit wimpy ones.) Now, before you did yourself deeper, and consider wilder options such as toe-tagging them as a nascent Hitler Youth (which, if we may speak straight here, is precisely the flavor of the mud in your hand) - are you sure you don't wish to withdraw from the fray and catch a quick breath?

- Let's assume for a moment that you are correct, and that Bush-World is much like Franco-World. (You might argue it was less so, or more, I don't know - but that's the storyline you've sketched.) I suspect (were we sharing a few drinks on some late night) that you could and would quite happily draw out - in detail - issues such as unlawful detentions, the creation of an enemy within, foreign wars, control of the media, the manipulation of the past two elections (at least), the growth of poverty ill-health and hopelessness, the destruction of people's faith in community-led and state-backed constructive solutions to social ills, and the merger of church-the wealthy-the state-military-the media to make your case. In short, as a man who knows history and many languages and who uses words with some precision, and who values "facts," you would lay out the many parallels with past fascist regimes. Like Franco's.

Now, in that light, what would you propose the CITIZENRY do in response? How should they act - politically?

And - above all - how would they FEEL if they were attempting to throw off that yoke before it crushed them entirely?

Well, for my part, I would hope/expect that they would use new forms of communication and connection to grow their numbers. Like the internet. Like MoveOn.org and such. As the Obama campaign did, and did better than Dean and co. had earlier.

Politically, large numbers of them would likely prefer to select the best of the existing system, rather than plunge into options other nations have chosen, such as Civil War in Spain. Perhaps some would prefer voices raised in support of the Working Class - like Edwards. Or voices for Peace - like Kucinich. Women's voices - Clinton. Black voices - Obama.

And they would argue amongst and across themselves, but IF such an electoral option were open to them, most would likely prefer that to the kinds of steps Spain's citizens ended up having to take - and this is not an entirely unreasonable response, I would say.

Last connection here. How would they FEEL, Mr Seaton? They would feel frightened. Angry. Dissatisfied. All those things. And as their "favorite" political candidate rose - after many long years of defeat, media manipulation, civil rights betrayals, foreign wars wrapped in lies - might they not get a BIT excited? If memory serves - and ahhhh, yes, it does - progressive campaigns, fought in the face of quite powerful and nasty forces, do tend to get a bit excited. You live in Spain, so I needn't remind you.

What I am saying here is that the people of this nation have just lived through 8 years of deeply unhappy times. They have had TWO democratic elections snatched from their hands. Their media has been purchased, and their critical voices stilled. Intimidation is around every corner, blaring red-orange-and-yellow threats. Hundreds of thousands of their children have been marched off to war. They watched as one of the world's most well-funded, and well-constructed, Big Lie machines rolled in to back the Republican Party - and had to listen to it tear their saner voices and leaders to bits. And now, their homes, their incomes, their schools, their farms, their worlds are slipping away from them - most particularly amongst the poorer members and the working and middle classes.

And yet, when they put together a simple website to attempt to fight vicious smears and rumors (which helped destroy Kerry, Gore and Dukakis) - you, a progressive European - label THEIR efforts as sinister, and as attempts at intimidation.

When they have been divided amongst themselves for decades, as part of an explicit strategy adopted from Nixon on, and then attempt to UNIFY - with all the inevitable glossing over and "high-level platitude" talk that necessitates - you regard this as the work of a cynical demagogue (the worst in 200 years) and as sheer bat-shit craziness.

And when every poll shows that they now have their best chance to remove the worst of the worst from power, you suggest instead that they vote for someone who has warmongered for decades, a military man bred to generations of war, who has explicitly supported active, ongoing war for the next 100 years at worst, and at best, the establishment of more global military bases and effective international occupation.

And then, your greatest excitement comes when their candidates wife may potentially be revealed as having used the word "Whitey," and who may have called out her government for its terrible failures regarding Rwanda. THIS, in your mighty conclusion, seems to be the most salient and powerful political fact of the day. And the emotional reaction of some - who likely do not wish it to exist - signifies....... fascism?

As a progressive man, let me ask you. Do you choose political candidates by the words of their partners/spouses? Somehow, I suspect not.

Second, I assume you have some awareness of the history of racism in America, and of the Rwandan horrors. Would YOU, as a progressive man, find yourself entirely free of anger at these two historic chapters? Again, I doubt it.

Now. If you were politically active in a DEMOCRATIC system, where an incredibly polarized and divided nation is making steps to bring itself together under one banner, knowing full well that the other side owns the media, pulpits, large sums of money, a military machine in place overseas and a seemingly endless pool of "lone psychos" with guns - given all that, is there ANYTHING in you that might suggest to you, if you were an advisor, that such a rumor or fact hurt your greater cause?

Just think in terms of the greater good.

Imagine: On this hand, win the election, and have a chance at universal medicine, removal of troops from Iraq and an easing of tension with Iran, coordinated global action on climate change, and a black man in the Presidency.

And on the other, some harsh words spoken by the wife of the candidate, which would be distorted into she, her husband and any progressive Americans being smeared as hate-mongers. By a tape which may or may not exist. And which may or may not be a smear.

Which path would you PREFER?

When I weigh these things Mr Seaton, and I AM a progressive, and I HAVE spent a decade of my life in some of Europe's harder and poorer corners, as well as some of its most thoughtful (and yes, they are often one and the same) I find your words to be far worse than those of any "troll" that some kids and interested citizens on a website might be concerned about.

Your words - to welcome and recommend the extension of fascism in this nation - Franco-As-Good-Strong-Medicine - are contemptible.

I recommend that you take a long walk, and have a good think, sir.

If McCain wins, I know I will disagree with him most of the time, but I don't think I'll feel the sort of contempt I feel for Bush or Blair... or Obama.

So your rumor spinning blog is contempt driven. You practice double-binding and then express McIndignation that people slur you.

What is it that you want? Just say it plainly, with no assist from rumorology

What is it that you want? Just say it plainly, with no assist from rumorology

He wants attention. Because he is a NARCISSIST.

So, Cricket, what are you doing this summer? Any travel plans?

Seared sea scallops with hot & sour red onions

Sear scallops in hot pan in mixture of butter & olive oil, set on bed of mixed greens

In scallop pan, caramelize half-moon slices of red onion with crushed red chiles and black pepper, add red wine vinegar, reduce until almost dry, add sesame oil and top scallops with mixture, sprinkle with coarse sea salt, serve

If you are a friend, please don't be upset by any of this, I'm certainly not.

I'm sure your friends are in full agreement with most of it, and just too polite to say so.

In fact, the above abuse is music to my ears. It means that my probing has connected solidly with an exposed nerve and that a fruitful path of investigation has been revealed to me.

Get a clue, grampa. What it means is that you're a complete asshat, and people thought you ought to know. You didn't connect with an exposed nerve, you pompous twit--you connected with a community of people who aren't often presented with your stunningly naive level of stupidity.
