Have you seen the speculative post by Rosenbaum at Huffington arguing that McCain probably won't be the GOP nominee?

It's a hoot.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/steve-rosenbaum/when-mccain-drops-out_b_107236.html

I read that, but I think McCain would have to go into a coma, a real coma, before giving up his candidacy. He's determined to outrank his dad and granddad.

The article is nonsense because it's based on a flawed premise, ie. that McCain can't win. He can. Remember, we're talking about a country that elected Bush twice.

If the GOP wanted to force McCain out, it would get real ugly, and not in a way good for the GOP.

Actually, I really don't think we are that country anymore.

I read it and attempted to post, but it said the time had expired for comments on this thread, so here is what I wrote:

"Well, if I had to accept the post's premise, it would most definitely not be JEB, under any circumstance. JEB, himself, has told this to me personally.

"Colin Powell would be my choice. As a fiscal conversative who is not particularly enamored with John McCain and as an elected Republican Party official, I could support Colin Powell's presidential bid, especially if he ran on a really exciting flat or fair tax proposal, i.e., under a flat tax proposal: stop taxing individual wages, or under a fair tax proposal: nothing over 10% without the direct approval of the people at the ballot box.

"But, personally, I am much more interested in reforming the Republican Party into a completely "Online" political party so we can win the next six elections after this one."

Why would you want to reform the Republican Party? They are just the way they want to be. They are the party that honors the rich and doesn't give a shit about the common good. They don't care about the people who are the backbone of our country; they just worry that someone might get a dime without working for it.

They love war but won't fight in them. Oh, I could go on, but I am tired after a long day at work.

Don't you realise that the future of your extended family will be more hopeful and better with a view to the collective good? Do you really think that our country will be better off if it only gives rewards to people who get unearned income?

I did read that at Hufffington.
Wouldn't that be something if it came true ?
Who would get the nomination? Huckabee?
I think McCain looks terrible . To me he looks like he is totally worn out. He shows no passion.

yes I don't think there's a snowball's chance in hell that Mccain would voluntarily give it up.
`I will never surrender` McCain?

Jed's speculating not that McCain will give it up but that the GOP will force him out.

Every digit crossed it doesn't happen.

scary. but doubtful. plenty of people still think McCain can win on electoral math. but if the polls get much worse...

There are a number of things I don't "jive" with, but there is one thing that I've seen a lot of among Democrats who ought to know better: OVERCONFIDENCE.

Democrats are simply unused to the experience of having a nonincumbent nominee actually leading, even if modestly, in the polls. But the last time that happened was the Dukakis 88 election, which I remember vividly, living at that time in a swing state (CA, then a swing state) which in the end Dukakis failed to carry.

Dukakis for much of the May-August period was leading AND MORE HEAVILY THAN OBAMA NOW, in the polls, inspiring the VILLAGE VOICE to run a memorable cover story (about Dukakis) during the Democratic Convention: "Will he blow it?" which indeed he did. The GOP are NOT giving up this election and neither should we. A lead of 4-6 % in the national polls is hardly insurmountable, and just wait until the cries of "liberal" and "elitism" start to fly fast and thick, the Willie Horton-to-Swiftboating tradition both on and off the political radar, and of course, not that W Bush (as someone above suggested) was "elected" twice, but that he at least came CLOSE ENOUGH to being elected to steal the elections successfully.

We need to consider every possible way that Obama could lose, and more importantly, EVERY possible way, other than donating, as well as, for those in a position to, volunteering, that we, eg on the web, can help increase Obama's chances of winning in every way possible.

I remember there was, a number of years ago but since the 04 election, a "Democracy Corps" at DU -- and it was effective but for some reason abandoned. It is a model for at least ONE way that we can be effective on the web

There are two huge difference between Obama and Dukakis. People like Obama, and Obama is crafty* enough to not screw this up.

*he gets around, always down, just my type, etc.)

I doubt very much that McCain will be dropping out short of a tragic event. John McCain has spent the greater portion of his life shooting for the Presidency. We'd be fools to underestimate that fact. By the same vein, while I agree that Senator Obama's outlook is good for the fall, by no means do I want to play into a narrative of inevitability. That is a dangerous assumption to fall into and one that often turns itself right on its head. Just remember: a year ago, Hillary Clinton was the inevitable Democratic nominee.

I agree it's inevitable that Obama will win. His lead is unsurmountable.

Maybe its too obvious, and that's why no one has pointed it out, but the post is a nice play on the Clayton Williams controversy.

IMO the most attractive job in the world right now must be McCain's veep. He gets the nod to fulfill his lifelong ambition and then falls down the stairs on a random Tuesday after the election. Then Jeb or another anointed torch-carrier walks into the third Bush term to carry on the work of the corporate oligarchy.
Bush and McCain hate each other. IMO McCain is doomed - he wins a rigged election and is dead before inauguration day.
Unless of course he is trailing in the polls too badly even for stealing the election. Then he doesn't survive to election day.
There, I've said it. Send me to Gitmo, or to Las Vegas.
