Obama cuts an ad to help John Barrow in his primary fight

http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/shared-blogs/ajc/politicalinsider/entries/2008/06/18/obama_cuts_an_ad_to_help_john.html

Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama has taped a radio commercial on behalf of U.S. Rep. John Barrow of Savannah, who faces a July 15 primary challenge.

Barrow's challenger is Regina Thomas.

Meet Regina:

http://firedoglake.com/2008/05/24/blue-america-welcomes-regina-thomas-ga-12/

CQPolitics article describing Regina's challenge.

Primary Challenge an Extra Hurdle for Dem Incumbent in Ga. House Race

http://www.cqpolitics.com/wmspage.cfm?docid=news-000002710992

Matt Stoller weighs in over at OpenLeft:

http://www.openleft.com/showDiary.do?diaryId=6448

I agree with Matt's take:

If Barrow loses, Obama has a progressive ally in Thomas.  If Barrow wins, a conservative House Democrat owes Obama a big favor.  It's a no-lose proposition for [Obama].

It may be a no-brainer for Obama, but it looks like a win-win for progressives if Regina Thomas can score a victory in the GA-12 primary.

Thoughts on the Georgia 12th District Democratic primary?

And another link (w/ photo of Ms. Thomas):

http://savannahnow.com/node/482563

Interesting story, Chino. I read through a couple of the blogs and everyone raises good points. I hadn't thought about the point of not supporting the progressive black woman because she couldn't win and didn't plan on running a real campaign.

At the end of the day, for me, I recognize that I am going to need to dismiss or out-right ignore some things that are done that don't make much sense to me. I imagine Barack will need to do some things that seem like more of the same, but are really part of getting elected in the first place.

Dude better step up to the plate come January 2009, though, because this kind of nonsense has to end if we are ever going to truly fix this county.

Admittedly, I don't know enough about GA-12 (or the candidates) to have an opinion about whether a Thomas win would be good for her district's constituents. If someone with local insight into the race could weigh in, that would be cool. And that someone would be more than welcome to either agree with my echoing Stoller's take on the race or call me out for my ignorance of facts on the ground.

Just to shed some light on where I'm coming from, I'm expecting big wins for Democrats in November, and following those wins, I'm looking forward to freely expressing some of my latent anti-incumbent tendencies. Particularly where Blue Dogs like Barrow are concerned.

Totally, I think we need to completely abandon incumbency and precedent in all things as our first response. The only American who should be guilty until proven innocent is an incumbent politician.

Well, here is a map of GA-12. It includes Milledgeville, Vidalia, Statesboro, Savannah, and possibly Augusta, so my first thought is that we're talking significantly conservative territory. Of course, I then read the bit on Open Left where it says that 70% of the primary voters were African American. Re-reading that brings my eye to the phrase "primary voters", and given my modest knowledge of the area (I've been to Statesboro several times and Savannah a couple), I'm thinking that if 70% of the primary voters were African American, that's probably a sign that my intuition about there not being that many Democrats in the area is correct.

I definitely understand the dangers in voting for an "electable" Democrat who is merely a DINO (and am against such a tactic), but I thought it might be helpful to flesh out the demographics somewhat.

Exactly the kinda analysis I was hopin' to see here. Ben rocks. He apparently doesn't recommend. But he still rocks.

My bad. I usually recommend an article when I see it on the main page and don't always think to do so when I come in from links. Rec'd.

You got here from a link? Hot damn, my pimpin' is startin' to pay off!

I'm gonna stop before I go all Jerry Maguire on your ass, but, yeah, it's what Renée said. Don't disrespect it.

Of course, if Regina fails to interest the TPM mob, there's always this from EK:

http://www.prospect.org/csnc/blogs/ezraklein_archive?month=06&year=2008&base_name=more_on_taiwan_what_the_expert

http://www.prospect.org/csnc/blogs/ezraklein_archive?month=06&year=2008&base_name=taiwans_single_payer_system

I'm down with single-payer. Taiwan has developed into an interesting model that affirms my faith in single-payer systems. And Ezra Klein has noticed. Rock on, Ezra.

Not that Regina wouldn't agree. I think she would. One more reason to wonder why GA-12 doesn't plan to elect her to Congress.

Obviously, this Taiwan single-payer aside is going nowhere. But, if there are any folks out there who understand the relevance of Taiwanese land reform and share my hope to see that successful model applied to similar reforms south of the US border, well, you're welcome to join in. Collor, Cardoso, Lula ... setting aside my enthusiasm for the latter, when exactly is the former, i.e., real land reform per the Taiwan model, scheduled to happen?

avatar

I heart single payer, I'll check it out

You need an avatar. I almost didn't see you there.

Check out www.prospect.org and from there find Ezra Klein's blog.

I'd not noticed Ezra's blog until Paul Krugman emailed me and vouched for the young Master Klein as someone whose blog was "very, very good" ... I trust you'll agree. In fact, I hope you'll more than agree, because "very, very good" is not exactly how I, myself, would choose to go about describing a friend's blog. At some point, you've got to be able to differentiate between LDS.org and the rest of the blogosphere. To my mind, "very, very good" doesn't quite achieve that.

Please bear with me here. Looking at the recs so far, I can see that we've arrived at that stage of the reader posting process here at TPM where narcissists like myself are typically required to step up and complain about not gettin' due respect, and then do somethin' about it.

If I tend to be the only one here bringin' this particular complaint, then that says somethin' positive about the relative lack of narcissists in these parts, don't it? So, pat yourselves on the back, chortle at my expense, and pay attention to what follows. Because, unlike me, it ain't gonna be pretty.

Has everyone read this?

http://pressblog.org/npc/SteveOHearn/2008/06/16/who-is-larry-sinclair/

Oh, crap, I wanted to get into the ugly stuff, and then I go and check my Inbox and find stuff like this:

http://my.barackobama.com/page/community/post/samgrahamfelsen/gG5SPm

Take a moment, watch, listen, and I'll be back with the dirt that's all mine, not Obama's.

UPDATE: For those of you who are at work and cannot watch the video, continue reading for the full text of Obama's statement...

Hi, this is Barack Obama.

I have an important announcement and I wanted all of you – the people who built this movement from the bottom-up – to hear it first. We’ve made the decision not to participate in the public-financing system for the general election. This means we’ll be forgoing more than $80 million in public funds during the final months of this election.

It’s not an easy decision, and especially because I support a robust system of public financing of elections. But the public financing of presidential elections as it exists today is broken, and we face opponents who’ve become masters at gaming this broken system. John McCain’s campaign and the Republican National Committee are fueled by contributions from Washington lobbyists and special interest PACs. And we’ve already seen that he’s not going to stop the smears and attacks from his allies running so-called 527 groups, who will spend millions and millions of dollars in unlimited donations.

From the very beginning of this campaign, I have asked my supporters to avoid that kind of unregulated activity and join us in building a new kind of politics – and you have. Instead of forcing us to rely on millions from Washington lobbyists and special interest PACs, you’ve fueled this campaign with donations of $5, $10, $20, whatever you can afford. And because you did, we’ve built a grassroots movement of over 1.5 million Americans. We’ve won the Democratic nomination by relying on ordinary people coming together to achieve extraordinary things.

You’ve already changed the way campaigns are funded because you know that’s the only way we can truly change how Washington works. And that’s the path we will continue in this general election. I’m asking you to try to do something that’s never been done before. Declare our independence from a broken system, and run the type of campaign that reflects the grassroots values that have already changed our politics and brought us this far.

If we don’t stand together, the broken system we have now, a system where special interests drown out the voices of the American people will continue to erode our politics and prevent the possibility of real change. That’s why we must act. The stakes are higher than ever, and people are counting on us.

Every American who is desperate for a fair economy and affordable healthcare, who wants to bring our troops back from Iraq. Who hopes for a better education and future for his or her child, these people are relying on us. You and me. This is our moment and our country is depending on us. So join me, and declare your independence from this broken system and let’s build the first general election campaign that’s truly funded by the American people. With this decision this campaign is in your hands in a way that no campaign has ever been before. Now is the time to act. Thank you so much.

All that, and no mention of this:

http://my.barackobama.com/page/outreach/view/main/TrollBowl

Fucker.

Whatever. Sorry for that interruption. All I have to say about that is that anyone who comments on this thread automatically triggers a $10 contribution to the Obama campaign.

Yeah, go figure, I'm tired of donating whenever Seaton posts. That dude's fuckin' relentless. My own commenters, on the other hand, well, y'all tend to be - how to say it without steppin' on some toes here - not quite as relentless.

For shame. Or not. It's in your hands now, losers.

Every comment?

Seriously?

WTF not?

Apologies. WTF in my addled state was meant to be unwrapped as 'Why-The-Fuck' ... not.

Nice wriggle.

Unwriggle this: FU.

Love a challenge. "Unwriggle this: FU"

(Hmmmm..... I'll bet that anagram machine could be programmed to send comments direct to this here post...)

Ark ark. Mars attacks.

Funny as that was, and even as much as that was totally at your expense, please don't leave. This is my Earnest and Chino's Oscar speakin' as one here.

Back in eve - Martians to manage.

"Hitler Fungus Wig." Damn good one by the machine.

Hope the bombshell's a good one.

Better than your goddam anagram machine, anyway. Noted with a huge wistful grin.

And does "anyone who comments" include yourself? I just want to be clear on the ground rules here.

Oh, and is the $10 per person, or per comment?

Well, I think he's forced by law to stop after this page reaches 230 comments or so. (Isn't the limit $2300?)

After 230 he can continue by giving to the Democratic party and other pro-Obama groups. So in order to know when to stop posting we need to know his bank balance, and also the current value of any stocks, etc., so that we can stop before he's forced to sell his house and such.

No, I'm goin' with the $500 limit over at:

http://my.barackobama.com/page/outreach/view/main/TrollBowl

$500 was the goal. We're $290 from reaching our goal.

If y'all pester me to the extent that I end up reachin' that goal tonight, well, good on ya'. At $10 a pop, good luck. This ain't dKos and I'm pretty sure you're unable to bring all that. Because, well, you suck, just like Andrew, Greg and Josh. But mostly Greg. And I know I can diss that piece of work until morning and he still won't show up here defendin' his honor, and even if he does, I can afford the $10. Because, let's face it, that's all it's gonna be.

Have I clarified anything with this, or is it just gettin' murkier by the minute?

We're $290 from reaching our goal.

Then the 38 comments so far ... 39 with this one! ... put you over the limit. Our work here is done, I guess.

As if my own comments count! C'mon, just because I support Obama doesn't mean I'm a chump.

And I'm not countin' any replies to this comment. It's way too obvious of an opening.

Hat's off to you Chino!

(Pun fully intended)

Jeebus gripes on a crisp.

No takers?

$10 bucks Blue. In Seaton's name, please. Jeez, that dude tired me out too.

And no, O probably can't go around playing hunter-seeker missile on elected Dems. However, pitchfork-bearing mobs of Dems COULD!

I got the forks. Loadsa forks. I'm all forked up.

Tnx fer the tenner.

And you DO know we could bankrupt you fairly fast, just by luring that Joolian dude back out. And you'd be paying out $10 fer recipes you already had. Hope you got some fine print behind this plan. Hulloooooooooo..... Joooooolian!

I'm trustin' that Julian's long gone and y'all are (mostly) good people, as it's always (mostly) been, and as it surely promises to be here at TPM, what with folks like you and LisB around and all.

As an aside, please note that I caught sight of your authentic (even if long-winded) plea to Mr. Seaton to take a walk and come back refreshed. We could all use that advice from time to time, and you're a good soul for takin' the time to impart it.

That said, you're kinda holdin' me to a two-fer with your doubled-up comments, arent' ya'?

In any case, nevermind that, and you'll see me settle up all fair-and-square-like here per my pledge shortly.

I haven't even dropped my bombshell yet, and y'all are gatherin' 'round. Glory be.

Chino:

You raise, through this Georgia race, a very important issue, and that is whether progressives are going to be able to accept poitical reality in DC. Politically speaking, the endorsement of a well-funded incumbent is a no-brainer. Anyone who thinks that Senator Obama, in the midst of the presidential campaign, is going to buck trends and disrespect incumbency, needs to learn a bit more about how Washington, D.C. works. Incumbents don't like to be challenged, and it makes them nervous to see other incumbents challenged. DC, like so much else, is all about equilibrium.

A successful politician cannot change the system unless and until that person acquires a knowledge of the system he or she is trying to change. That means that, if Senator Obama is going to bring progressive change to DC (and that has to be a long-term goal), the irony is that the key to his success at the threshold is learning about the current system from the inside. This is yet another example of that education process.

Chino:

I just gave your column a plug over at Election Central.

http://tpmelectioncentral.talkingpointsmemo.com/2008/06/barack_obama_john_barrow.php

Don't say I never did anything for ya! :)

Bruce

Bruce, you're not gonna get any argument here on this front. I don't pretend to know how you feel, but for myself, I've been itchin' to get through this primary and get down to business.

Whatever the result.

In that sense, I appreciate your recognizing that this Georgia primary (whether it's a battle worth fightin' or not) is emblematic of the work we have ahead of us. And hell if you didn't just cost me $10 or more. Hold me accountable. I'll get sober at some point, at which point I'll have no excuse.

Dammit if you didn't double up on me as well. Whatever. I'm good for it. Not like that no-good low-life Seaton character I've been stalking since way back when. If he happens to show up, hot damn, I'm doublin'-down on his comments - no disrespect meant to y'all, y'understand.

That you've not succeeded at gettin' on my bad side oughta be taken as a good thing. As later comments of mine will prove. Hang on. No arrest warrants pending, they're comin' and they're personal. As in personal correspondence between me and the NPC. Worth waitin' for, ain't it? I think so, anyway. Not sure yet about how Steve O'Hearn feels about it, but we're gettin' set to find out, ain't we?

avatar

For some reason, links to her campaign effort are hard to find. So...

Here's her campaign site, and here's a video she did called 42 Reasons that you should definitely watch.

She needs your help!

I know. Why else would I be posting about Regina here?

She's really foregoing a lot of opportunities in terms of online support by not tapping into the TPM machine. OK, that's snark. But, what I really mean is that she needs to get familiar with what ActBlue is all about. Check out openleft.com, dailykos.com, and write directly to the siteowners about gettin' somethin' goin'.

The 12th is a pretty conservative district that anybody who isn't willing or able to do a pretty good conservative loser impersonation is going to have a hard time winning. Don't get me wrong, I've got no excess of love for Barrow (he was a total sellout on the Clarke County Commission and a complete disappointment as my rep in Washington, until his district was re-districted out from under him), but I do think his conservatism is basically the opportunistic/expedient/job-preservation kind, and with a different prevailing wind I think he'll magically revert back to his previous (relative) liberalism. Don't like the guy, and I'd love to see someone more progressive than him in DC, but I think the Obama campaign may be smarter than we're giving credit for on this one.

And this is my congressional district:

http://www.sos.mo.gov/elections/maps/uscongress/district7.asp

Don't ask me what happened when I stepped up to help the Dem runnin' against our Republican rep. The only wisdom I came away with from that attempt was ... better candidates, please.

What can we do to help get us there? Outside of runnin' ourselves?

*ding*

Recommended!

OK, then. Things have settled down. Time for the bombshell.

Steve,

Honestly, I care because, to me, it all felt like a smear job from the get-go - and the NPC wound up looking complicit. Maybe it's just because I'm some schmo who happens to look up to guys like you and the NPC and expect y'all to make the right call, in the expectation that y'all will step up and do your jobs, rather than waste time condescending to peons like me.

With that chip now off my shoulder, let me say, frankly, this seemed like an easy call - entirely too easy, if you'd just bothered to investigate Larry at all before adopting that tone in your post that suggested that all of us who questioned Larry's appearance were simply answering the call of marching orders emanating from FDL. As if. There are enough bogeymen to deal with already without our side comin' up with fresh ones of our own, don't ya' think?

In any case, thanks for replying. I think we're on the same side, but I still think you blew it this time around.

And I still wonder how the NPC manages to avoid liability for providing a platform for known criminals and the mentally ill. Scoff away, but that just seems wrong. Time will tell, won't it?

Best Regards,

Chino Blanco

I didn't go to the event. It was the same time as the Tim Russert funeral you know - many were over at the Kennedy Center, the Club was empty, although the radical left's assault on the Club over this guy attracted so much attention that many crews went out of their way to attend it. And I heard he was arrested afterwards but haven't confirmed that. Anyway - I'll probably blog about it today but we'll see.

What do you think about the guy? I finally found his Youtube video and he doesn't come across as credible, not to me. Too light on details - like - how did he get connected to Obama? Why were they in the limo? What do they have in common that brought them together.

The only thing that makes me think twice about him are emails like yours and the hundreds of others I've received - why do you care so much about this guy?

I don't get it. Why give that guy a mouthpiece? If I had a dollar for every crazy fool that had an obsession with a famous figure I could buy that guy a stylish straight jacket and a well-appointed padded room. Seems like the NPC is salivating for anything negative against Obama. They had such a hit with the Rev. and all.

From what I've read of Steve O'Hearn's blog at the NPC site, it's like he only gets his campaign news from Hillaryis44. And folks like us automatically become members of the "radical left" when we send angry emails askin' WTF the NPC thinks it's doin' rentin' out their facilities to criminals and the unwell.

Check out this page listing the NPC blogs:

http://pressblog.org/npc/

Did you notice Jeff Gannon's name? Yup. That Jeff Gannon.

Sad.

In case folks are wonderin', this is all in response to this:

http://pressblog.org/npc/SteveOHearn/2008/06/16/who-is-larry-sinclair/

Snivelin' twits who rule our discourse. Follow the link and you'll know who I'm talkin' about. Turns out, they ain't all Republicans.

But they do all belong to MENSA.

OK, I get 21 non-Chino comments thus far.

I'm gonna settle the bill and then we continue.

Keep in mind that, per my latest qualification of whatever pledge I supposedly took before this all got started, I'm only payin' for the next 8 non-Chino comments. So, let's keep it fun and informative, K?

While I'm busy with that, please help me add commas along with whatever else required to make sense of any previous posts.

Actually, no, no missed commas that I can detect. Kudos!

Check it:

http://my.barackobama.com/page/outreach/view/main/TrollBowl

Somebody apparently snuck up and donated $10 while I wasn't lookin'. Good for you. Means we're down to 7 fun and informative non-Chino comments. Cool.

Goodness gracious if we aren't but $45 from our goal.

Sorry, but that means I'm only bound to reply to exactly no more than 4.5 further comments.

'Waste not, want not', 'bring it on', and all that jazz.

4.5 further comments

In an attempt to be helpful, I hereby

Yeah, you've successfully managed to write half a comment. Good for you. Sadly enough, as a Democrat Abroad, I've been trained to deal with fractional votes, which training I assume applies to fractional comments. Of course, even before my training, I'd told 'em, no worries, it's all good as long as it cancels out Seaton's. At which point, they looked at me funny and I mentioned I had a blog to go check on.

I take it the bombshell was mostly 'shell'. Apparently, the bomb itself was mostly 'dud'. Oh my and oh well. Sadly, this is not unfamiliar territory.

$10 for Obama please. Ka-ching!!!!

PS Obama would surely prefer a certain ally like Thomas to a conservative maverick like Barrow, but the campaign must have calculated that Thomas wouldn't win the district against a Republican. The majority of voters in much of the country do not agree with with many progressive positions. We can exclude dissenters and seethe in the opposition, or we can work with those we disagree with and get some laws passed. John Barrow will surely buck the party on some crucial votes, and people will howl with rage, but a Republican would vote against the party far more consistently.

Oh, great, now my Sith Lord appears, the mastermind whose plans I have no choice but to serve. And it is only because of my mindful service to said Lord that I dare ask:

Are you fuckin' technicolor serious?

Is that all you got?

Barrow is a major player in the 50-state GOTV effort that Obama's putting together. Because he knows which side his (Barrow's) bread is buttered on.

Fair enough.

But ... it's not that Barrow bucks the Party on some crucial votes, it's that he bucks the Party on all the crucial votes.

C'mon, as a Blue Dog, he's already pretty fuckin' consistent.

What I want to know is, when does amateur hour start? Because I'm gettin' pretty tired of the pros.

Anybody else here wanna run for Congress some day?

When that day comes, like hell I'm gonna be acquiescin' to this shit.

Pls run that back to HQ and let me know what the word is on that.

Sorry to burst your faith in the Sith, but I was talking out of my ass. I don't know shit about Barrow. Allow me to make amends. This article suggests that it's a Dem leaning district with a 45% black population:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/cq/20080401/pl_cq_politics/politics2694409

So it seems that Thomas could win. Not sure what Obama's rationale is in that case. Political payback?

And regarding my initial point, it depends how bad the Republican guy is. A moderate Republican could be better than Barrow. The opponent looks likely to be John Stone. I couldn't find anything about him though.

I feel kinda silly askin', but did you happen to rec this post on the way in or out of here? Sorry if it wasn't you who forgot, but someone sure forgot to, and I'm tryin' to figure out who.

Of course I rec'd, you rec whore. That question cost you $10 for comment 3 from me. What are you up to now?

Here? Like I know.

Otherwise, I think the word is 'hookie'

One other thing ...

Why does 'Scientific' get all the good trolls?

Goddam affirmative action troll magnet. I'm here bustin' ass and what do I get? Fuckin' liberals. Nothin' but liberals. We are so screwed.

If you don't believe me, check this out:

http://tpmcafe.talkingpointsmemo.com/talk/2008/06/michelles-moment.php

I've always loved my country, and that might pose a problem for some of you here, so if you're not happy in these parts, click the link and rest assured that the joint's hoppin' over at Scientific's place.

God help me if anyone were to think I was serious.

It's snark. Equal fuckin' opportunity snark. Although, judgin' by the rate of new comments, it's now devolved to 'separate but equal' snark. IOW, Chino snarks and the rest of the civilized world proceeds to separate from Chino and carry on with bein' civilized and equal.

A fate that I might've wished for Seaton, but that I've now brought upon myself through noone's carelessness but my own.

If only I were a whigger. Then, I might understand and be understood.

For those who've failed to recognize that this is me takin' the piss out of Seaton, get a clue.

And for those who don't understand just how truly bitter I am, keep in mind that Scientific dropped off the rec list with 51 recs and 202 comments.

That Scientific didn't have to pay his commenters to show up is just another slap in my face.

I'm not sure what comes next in terms of addressing this problem, but I'm gonna be thinkin' long and hard about it.

And how is it that I managed to never laugh out loud whenever my folks would tell me I needed to think "long and hard" about something? I guess I'm just one more unimaginative kid who's grown up to become another boring adult. Wow, who coulda seen that one comin'?

OK, so I'm scarin' everybody off. Fair enough. Let's talk about what's warming my cold heart as I peruse the rec'd list:

Read 'em and weep. Or read 'em and rejoice. As bad as it may suck now, we're gettin' a lotta shit outta the way this election cycle. Fuck Steve O'Hearn and the NPC. We're comin' for ya'. It's our country, our rules: the same rules you apparently somehow never learned or somehow conveniently forgot.

Deal.

Look, if I was Ta-Nehisi Coates, I'd already have offensivetoyou here telling me about how he's seen every Morgan Freeman flick since way back before Sidney Poitier ever came onto the scene.

And it's only in that sense that I wonder ... where are my fuckin' trolls?

And it's not just a racial thing. Hell, if I was Geraldine Ferraro, you know I'd be gettin' better than what I'm gettin' now ... rather than havin' to literally pay for comments, as I'm doin' now ... Hell, folks would be payin' me to comment, wouldn't they?

I give up.

And I'm not countin' any replies to this comment. It's way too obvious of an opening.

You keep changing the rules! But if I object to attempts to change the rules in mid-game, the Hillary supporters will interpret that as a slam on Hillary. In the unity pony spirit, I endorse attempts by candidates who run inept campaigns to try to change the rules in mid-game.

But note that by unchecking the "In reply to Chino Blanco" box this is no longer a reply to the comment mentioned in the quoted text, and there fore ... ka-ching! ... ten bucks more to Obama.

Welcome to Calvinball, Tinman. Try to keep up. I hold the pursestrings. You're just a bit actor in my drama. Deal.

This reminds me of the Jerry Lewis telethon, with more aggression.

Are you a snowman? Or just a fedora-wearing, chain-smoking shadow? In any case, you may enjoy the following comment, which I just added over at D. Seaton's latest reeking post:

I believe with Seaton it's a case of ego munchies (thank you, George Clinton) leading to exhibitionism - a compulsion to strut his stuff in expectation of dazzling the rubes (us), followed by a wank-fest of self congratulation.

Oh god, sounds like me. Could my hatred of all things Seaton perhaps be nothing more than a strange form of self-loathing?

Luckily, whatever doppelgänger-by-proxy syndrome my little Spanish friend is suffering from, his current fixation seems to be all about carrying on the work of Eldridge Cleaver, the greatest LDS (Mormon) Black Panther that ever lived. In fact, the only LDS (Mormon) Black Panther that ever lived. Strikingly similar, in terms of experience, to the privileged.

I reject that last statement. The fact that I am its author and yet have no idea as to its actual meaning militates for a complete disavowal.

Dang, Chino! I read your post, but...this thread! Cripes! This thread's all over the place! 67 comments long! I'm skimming thru--first, we're talking about the U.S. Congressional race in Georgia; next, um....Taiwan's single payer system?? Next, Larry Sinclair and the troll bowl?

You're not making this easy for me, Chino!

Anyway, I came over to pay my respects because you were dropping so many damn hints on other threads.

Are you lonely, Chino? Awww. We love you. You da man. You da chain-smokin', fedora-wearin', wise-crackin' man!

I don't know what's wrong. Is it that I don't hear it enough?

Otherwise, why the humiliating pleas for attention?

It just doesn't make sense.

(hug and smile)

In all seriousness, I really do enjoy your posts and comments.

Your wit and maturity add so much to your intelligent views.

And I like that you share pics of your family. They're gorgeous!

And there I was, worried that my wit and maturity were too often ultimately detracting from my intelligent views. But you've convinced me now and I've decided to keep 'em.

And thank you for your kind words. Although, please know, I've actually decided to give up my family in favor of tryin' to make the top of the rec list here. Sure the kids are cute, but - let's be honest here - not that cute. And not nearly as cute as 'Regina Thomas' would be if she happened to be sittin' there atop the Recommended Reader Posts right now.

Here's a comment. OBAMA ROCKS

Check out this post where I talk about converting a Life long Democrat that's Voting for McCain.

http://tpmcafe.talkingpointsmemo.com/talk/2008/06/a-few-choice-words-for-the-lif.php

Keep up the good work. Hope you find some friends to rec' me. This is gonna be my last comment o' the day!

never let 'em know it's your last comment of the day, blue-dude.
it's like stakin yerself out next to a nice comfy campfire, pot boiling.

it'll draw em in. snarking thru the snowladen woods, each of 'em achin to pull yer posted-gizzard out, licking their single tooth, worse'n the snow-weasels of deepest canadian winter.

i do like calvinball though.

and am glad some of this nonsense - like our big-balled buddy sinclair and his lawyer - is gettin' dealt with now.

btw. and if you're not usin' that hat, could you hold it over genghis' fuckin collar? anywhere he shows up, i start twitchin'.

if i was epileptic, instead of just apoplectic, i'd sue the bastid.

amen.

hitler fungus wig - out.

Thanks for the warning, but my reality's even uglier than the bad scene you drew for me. Since then and now, nobody at all showed up.

You may have been thinkin' about somebody else's neighborhood. This one here's pretty damn safe. And quiet. Too damn quiet if you ask me.

Just to be clear, I'm not paying for any more comments.

And I just realized that my offer may, in fact, have kept some of y'all from commenting here, because you didn't want me breakin' the bank on your account.

So, for those of you who've kept mum for that reason, let me just take a moment here and recognize you for who and what you are: obviously much, much better friends than the connivers and con artists whose comments can all be seen upthread. Bunch of users, the lot of 'em. Thank goodness you're not like them.

Say what!?!? That's a bait and switch!!!! What's a guy gotta do to make you send $10... actually engage in the topic of the post?

Bwaahahah - never!!!

Nice to see you here and thanks for helping make my point. You stayed away because you cared, and for that I'm deeply moved.

Now, if I give you the $10 instead of Obama, will you please go away?

Bwaa. ha. hah.

As we seem to be gettin' to that time in the thread when typically the good-byes are said, loose ends tied up, apologies extended, and forgiveness granted, let's circle back to Steve O'Hearn, Chair, New Media Committee over at the National Press Club.

Steve replied to my latest email with plenty of courtesy and asked me to check out his latest post:

http://pressblog.org/npc/SteveOHearn/2008/06/19/who-is-the-national-press-club-kos-you-need-to-know/

I'm not gonna delve too far into the discussion Steve and I had about the NPC and the whole l'affair Sinclair. It was way too 'inside baseball' and would no doubt bore you.

But just let me say that Steve O'Hearn is a stand-up guy.

And the work he's doin' over at the NPC is valuable.

And the NPC itself continues to keep and promote the highest standards of journalistic conduct.

But most importantly, it keeps and maintains a members-only area on the top floor of the building, with a lounge, restaurant, bar, and gym. Where people referred to as "staff" will soon have the pleasure of looking after people like "me" ...

Did I mention that the NPC is a bulwark against all the dark forces gathered against our free press?

Did I mention nobody mixes a meaner Long Island Ice Tea than Paulo who works the lounge bar Saturdays?

Alright, alright, time to quit pokin' fun and give Steve a break. Done.

Stick 'em with the tab Chino. It'll help make up for some of today's pain.

Next time, I'd advise titling your post something like, "$10 to Obama For Everyone Who Can Beat Me At Calvinball." Then maybe add something like, "Hillary Couldn't."

And have a makeshift list of shifty rules ready BEFORE you post.

Guaranteed winner. Got my rec already.

Cheers.

Funny. Noted. Will wait until everyone's forgotten who came up with these ideas and then claim them as my own. Cheers.

I was just kiddin' about poppin' by the NPC. That whole riff was meant to be some gentle teasin' of Steve O'Hearn, who seems like a nice enough guy, but whose writing style cracks me up.

I mean, never use the phrase fun and camaraderie twice in a fairly short post describing what goes on at the NPC. It's a dead giveaway that the regulars at the NPC are a bunch of waxworks with absolutely no sense of fun and a fondness for totin' shivs in their bathrobe pockets.

Also, isn't this an odd sentence?

The Club has a full-time set of outstanding employees, known as the staff.

Doesn't that convey a sense that 'staff' is somehow not synonymous with 'employees' but rather the writer's polite way of saying 'native help' ?

Spent many years in England, and it's hard not to smell the tone 0f the place from that description. Ye Gods. I came from a farm, and the idea - in these centuries old English establishments and great houses and such - of someone even waiting on you was tough to handle. It got made worse when I'd see/hear the attitude the young, incredibly-privileged people took toward the help. Being young - and snotty as well - I'd periodically leap up to relieve these elderly serving women of the huge trays they were carrying. I know I looked completely insane, but there you go. Still can't tolerate it today. So.... no NPC for me I'm afraid. Thanks for the warning, I've avoided creating another scene!

I haven't read all the links yet, or all the comments but I was moved by the video made for Regina Thomas and posted on firedoglake.com. She'd have my vote for sure. Her positions very closely match Obamas. However Obama couldn't exactly turn his back on Barrow who threw his support behind Obama back in February. Probably a win-win but I wonder what voters in GA will think, considering that Barrow just doesn't fit with Obama's positions.

I'm such a fuckin' idiot, Bademus.

I should've invited Regina to participate in this discussion. D'oh.

It's too late now, as this post is gonna drop off the front page in a few hours.

Seriously, just shoot me. Something is seriously wrong with me, and it starts with s-t-u-p-i-d.

So I just sent Regina an invite. If she accepts, we can do a Q&A here.

Actually, I'm thinkin' that'd be pretty cool as a series of reader posts: contact Dem challengers and invite them over here for a little Q&A with readers of TPMCafé.

That would be cool. From the firedoglake post it looks like that video clip wasn't something Ms. Thomas' campaign paid for. It mentions it as a "surprise" for her. She needs to get links to it out there, it's a great introduction to her.

This has been mentioned around TPM, so just wanted to note that Obama called up the two women who were wrongly prevented from taking seats behind him on the stage. He made it clear that his staff were in the wrong, he apologized, and the women remain supporters.

Here's to hopin' that never happens again.
