Reason to Believe in America Again
In all the psychodrama of trying to figure out what Clinton wants, its easy to overlook a simple fact.
Barack Hussein Obama is the Democratic nominee for President of the United States.
Just take a moment and appreciate that.
History will forever remember the date of June 3, 2008. And we were all a part of it.
I wish I was blessed with the talents of a poet to put into words exactly what this means and exactly how historic this is. But i'm not blessed with those skills.
I'll merely say this. During the course of the last eight years, there were moments when I lost faith in America and Americans. Over the last eight years, I've watched this country go from being the last great hope to a country that not only embraces torture and secret prison camps where "due process" is meaningless, but openly defies human rights and human dignity. I've watched our government go from one "of the people, by the people, and for the people", to one whose sole response to the protestations of its people is "So?".
But the wonderous thing about democracy is the ability to self correct. The ability of the people to grab the steering wheel and yank it in a drastically different direction just when you think we'll go over the cliff into oblivion.
Over the past eight years, it feels like we've forgotten what it really means to be Americans. We've forgotten that we faced down the British empire and won. We've forgotten that we overcame a divided union. We've forgotten that we've stood toe-to-toe with evil and came out triumphant before.
If over the course of the last eight years I lost faith in my country and my fellow citizens, my faith began to come back to me on a cold January night in Iowa when a young, unknown, upstart politician defeated the most dominant and powerful brand name in democratic politics of the last two decades.
And he did it by reminding us of our place in the American story. It doesn't begin with us, and it doesn't end with us. We've faced challenges and hardships before and we've come out stronger and more prosperous. And it is in realizing this, that we can begin to believe again in the possibility and the resilience of America. That while the challenges we face are tough, they are certainly no tougher than facing down Hitler, or overcoming a great depression, or staring down the Soviet Union with hundreds of nuclear missiles pointed at us.
But we should take a moment, and appreciate the awesomeness of an America where the impossible can still happen if you work hard enough and are willing to do what it takes.
I am so very proud of my country right now.

you are right, i look forward to go back to my country of origin, argentina, and instead of being ashamed of my acquired citizenship, being able to be proud of a country who elected a person as gifted, sophisticated, decent, visionary and talented as bo. and for once i'll be able to say (proudly this time) it could only happen in usa.
