Obama communications

avatar

I'm posting this in the hope that enough people will hit recommend and thus maybe, just maybe, Obama's blogging staff will read it.

I find it very disappointing - and I've seen others mention this occasionally in different blogs - that the only emails we ever get from Obama or the campaign are asking us to donate.  (Just occasionally you get an email about something important that doesn't make donating the principal point of the email.)

Surely they could make a point of having a staffer write a pleasant email to come from Obama about the state of the campaign or an initiative that doesn't mention donating; doesn't even have the donate button at the bottom.

If this campaign is really about `us` then it should set out to give the impression that `us` aren't only viewed as  money machines.

If you agree with this, please would  you hit recommend?

'commended.

This also goes along nicely with the transparency theme that I like so much.

C'mon! Let us know what you're thinking!

Wholeheartedly recommended! I don't even open the emails anymore because I'm sick of the pressure. We have a deadline! I made a speech! Whoo-dee-do!

Don't get me wrong - I still drop off a donation when I get a pay check (after the bills are covered, of course). But, I do wish the emails were a little more meaningful. I totally agree, Francesca - I feel like a human ATM, too.

FH,

Here's what to do to solve the problem.

This boy--me--could use a paying, repeat, paying, job right now.

I can knock out personal-sounding e-mails all day and all night long, and they would sound so sincere, you Obama peeps would just melt when reading them.

So...get a bunch of you together, contact the campaign, and make a STRONG suggestion that they hire me!

My writing--though some of it is highly critical of your candidate at times--can be evaluated at my blog.

I can produce stuff that will have you guys drooling as you reach into your pockets to donate.

[Note: This is a business proposition, not a political one, but a serious one nonetheless.]

Take the ball and run with it, Fran.

You're joking, right? No disrespect, but after reading some of your prose, I think you should apply at McCain's campaign. I've never drooled, but a couple of times I did throw up a little.

avatar

I get email updates/messages that don't ask for donations (of course, most do). So, probably every one does and just deletes assuming they are all asking for $$. I especially enjoy the ones that ask to send in suggestions for various issues.

I disagree with the post. The Democrats plan a 50 state strategy, which in the current environment, is brilliant, because many states are going to be in play, and it will stretch the Republicans very thin. However, a 50 state strategy will cost a lot of money.

The election of Barack Obama will transform this country in a myriad of ways. We must keep our eyes on the goal of getting Obama elected. This is not the time to look to the campaign for pleasant emails. Obama will get savaged by the Republican attack machine, fueled by the racists in this country. It is going to be a tough, ugly election. There will be lots of time for pleasant, chatty emails after we get this man into the White House, IMHO.

avatar

Come on. They have plenty of blogging staff. It wouldn't hurt them once a week to take a few paras out of the website's various blogs and send off a nice chatty email that doesn't have a donate button on it. It's so easily done - would only take a few minutes. It would make a huge difference to the `feel` of the campaign.

So ok it hasn't bothered you. But it's bothered enough people that could so easily, with such little effort, be placated.

To Aunt Sam,

Nowhere did I say I am an Obama supporter.

I hit McCain at least as hard as I do Barack, but that's not the point.

And if my prose did indeed make you throw up, that alone gives me a reason to keep on writing.

Kinda lonely up there in Alaska, huh?

Best Wishes,

FB

[Note: I was NOT joking.]

I really don't have the time or inclination to give specifics about particular postings (at TPM, Huffington, etc.) but factual documentation and research doesn't seem to play a part in many of your posts. Too many half-truths, assumptions and gotcha's to be credible. And that's only my opinion - many others most likely do drool over your posts.
Believe me, this time of year in Alaska is never lonely - thousands of people a day from every state and country are here until October. It's especially interesting this year, as many query about Obama (young and old from Japan, Europe, Australia and beyond). Fascinating to talk with people from different lands and cultures (and from other 49 states). Other country's visitors ask where they can get signs and bumper stickers?!?
Take care and wish you well - if u are serious about working for Obama's campaign - send him some 'sample pieces' and sincerely, Good Luck.

AS,

I am not a researcher, for sure. But neither do I deal in "half-truths."

When I cite specifics, they are accurate, if somewhat displeasing to the reader.

I NEVER lie; I NEVER state as fact anything that is merely my opinion---NEVER. I also NEVER try to mislead---NEVER.

What I do is write opinions based on my analysis and synthesis of facts. Enumerating lists of facts is not my thing, but I do consider myself somewhat well informed and am old enough to to consider myself experienced, per se.

I am totally non-partisan, though I obviously have opinions on many politico-socio-economic issues. I am much more concerned with producing interesting, unique, provocative writing than with the Content of the writing itself. That's why I could as easily work for McCain as for Obama.

I truly am pleased that my posts have provoked you to reply, and am sure Alaska is a dream-world place to live.

Keep in touch, and keep in mind that the Content of what I write is much less important (to me) than is the Form of my writing. (In other words, don't get too riled up by What I say, but concentrate on How I say it.)

Pretty nutty response, I know.

FB

This may surprise those who know my postings. I'm saying this as a staunch Obama supporter:

At the outset of the "bitter" controversy, I tried to contact someone high enough in the campaign to hear out my advice on how to deflect it — a course of action the campaign actually followed in part, eventually. No, the campaign flailed around a few days first, because the only people I could speak with were those bouncy, front-office call takers who switch you into the campaign's suggestion-line oblivion, there for your wisdom to rot with the other 5 million recorded suggestions.

I declined and asked for a supervisor. I was hung up on. I repeatedly tried and got the same result. They taped my name to their phones so that I could be put on endless hold (they finally admitted this) while they laughed about it. Eventually, I got very angry and called one of the staffers an effing moron.

And the last time I called, I actually got to speak with Steve H, who threatened to turn me over to Secret Service and local police if I ever called back.

This tale is all true. For a candidate who promises to make our voices heard, his Chicago staff operation cares damn little about listening. The operation is a one-way street when it comes to communication. Its top-down style is anything but grassroots-up.

Now it may be that I thought too highly of my input. I'll take that as given so that no one has to say so. But ...

On the other hand, I've given a ton of money to the campaign, was a state convention delegate, and did a hell of a lot of work for the campaign. On top of that, my advice was spot on. You'd think they might care enough to put me through to a mid-level supervisor (I wasn't expecting Axelrod).

So if there's anything I don't like about Obama's campaign, it's the slick, internet veneer over the old political machine.

By the way, Steve H never heard a word I said. He was too busy barking threats at me before he hung up.

I'm sorry to hear you were treated like that, Ripper, but I can't say I'm surprised. Presidential campaigns are hectic and have tons of people giving suggestions.

The part that's surprising is that you were a state delegate, and still got treated like that. I mean, aren't there only a few thousand delegates (could be wrong)? You'd think that they would be interested in hearing from you.

Not just a state delegate, either, but a lifelong journalist with a fair amount of media savvy who got CBS News and a couple others to flesh out their online stories (I saw the changes) and quit taking the "bitter" remark so egregiously out of context. I also supplied the only surviving copy (that I know of) of the original 1992 Clinton campaign tape, "The Man From Hope," to Axelrod & Associates — on THEIR FedEx account.

Send them a note using the same address. An actual letter might get read, while junior staffers, by now, are surely full of themselves.

I wouldn't blame th campaign for something that is probably happening well below the power ranks. Or, rather, I would blame them for having crappy processes in place to field important calls at the office.

I don't think there is a veneer on his campaign. If I thought that, I wouldn't be supporting the guy nor, I suspect, would you. You got your feelings hurt (as would I, in fact I would be severely pissed) and can't figure out how to address that situation.

I say a letter to Axelrod or someone in authority just might get this cleared up. The last thing they need is state delegates who aren't one-hundred percent.

What's surprising is that you didn't miss a beat in supporting his campaign, nevertheless. You're a good sport, Rip. :)

The candidate is NOT the campaign staff.

Really? Because I get emails all the time that don't ask me to donate, but just say 'hey, we won!' or 'hey, cool speech,' or 'important race because...' or more than the request for money, or even it included in the link, is one to phonebank.

I have probably seen more phonebanking requests than money requests. At least from my personal experience.

Of course, YMMV.

I get lots of emails that are not outright appeals for cash. I'm assuming most people do and just dump them not reading them. That's a shame. It's not like an email from the DSCC that's always asking for money.

avatar

I think 50% of mails are intended for update/information/campaign-mood etc, but they seem to have the DONATE button as their signature even i those mails. so technically, you are right there seems to be an underlying interntion of raising money, but as others have pointed out, to raise up to or more than one million dollars per day, they do have to contact people since that is their main source of income. i am happy with the mails that come with the signature DONATE rather than explicitly asking me to donate $25.

The DONATE button doesn't bother me. We are the grassroots network. I consider it a convenience when I am ready to donate. If I'm not, I scan the contents and move on.

Is this thread for real?

Come on. Take two seconds to update yourself on what's going on. I get emails all the time from the campaign, and they include updates in all sorts of campaign events, opportunities to get involved, etc.. "Barack" sent one about 5 minutes before he wrapped up the Nomination last Tuesday. Sure every email ends with a plea for a donation, but so what? It is a political campaign.

If you have the money, donate. If not, or if you don't want to, don't pay attention to the solicitation and move on.

Honestly, I'm appreciative of those links. It's not a flashing sign. I do understand the concerns about how to get info to the campaign. But for me I usually read the email and save it for a bit, in case the mood to donate strikes me. Often I've donated out of anger. Sometimes out of happiness. But I have to admit, usually it's some "emotion" that gets me going. And then I know I have a link to quickly allow me to express my emotion with a donation.

Has anyone noticed how quickly the trolling dropped off after we all agreed to donate to Obama when we see a troll comment? (doesn't have to be a monetary donation, of course. could be time)

Yup. I'm ready and waiting with 1 call for Obama in a swing state for each Troll post I see!

Dear Next President of the United States of America, Barack Obama;

As a past donor to your campaign and a future donor, I want you to know that I decided to donate, not due to your emails, but because of the "fierce urgency of now".

Please give us a personal message from you regarding the kinds of things happening in the campaign, how we can help other than just sending money, and most of all an overall "Pep" talk to keep us inspired. Yes we can!

I also wanted to share, while I have your attention, that I decided to register people, hopefully Democrats in Doolittle's district to help Charlie Brown contend and register even more Democrats in California. I also will travel to Nevada to also register more Democrats to assist in turning Nevada blue in November. If gas prices don't make it too difficult I will also travel to Oregon to do the same.

But just a little personal encouragement would go a long way in inspiring me to spend money (I am retired on a low fixed income) traveling to other states on your and our behalf.

i don't know what email list your on, but i regularly get emails from the campaign informing me of events and opportunities to volunteer.

and yes, almost every email does have the "donate" button, but you can't really blame them for that can you?

its not ALL about raising money like your post suggests.

Also, I think they probably don't want to send too many emails, for fear of prompting people to unsubscribe. The website, and campaign blog which is updated many times daily, provide exactly the kind of newsy and inspirational material you're looking for, and can be accessed at the user's discretion.

I think Fran just won the Most Recommended Post prize. Congratulations!

I just received an email about a nationwide project scheduled for June 28. They asked me to host a Meet and Greet event in my neighborhood. Have you volunteer to help with the campaign? Some of the emails have asked for volunteers.

avatar

I believe in what Obama has to offer and am glad to donate as often as I can. But, I must admit that it would be nice to get something non-money and a little more personal from time to time. It would also be nice if there was a suggestion box on line that you knew someone actually read and passed on the good ones to higher ups. I know that would be a big job, but it would also make people feel more involved. I bet there are volunteers who would read emails for a couple hours a day. They could probably even be forwarded on line to the readers.

avatar

Why be discouraged? Nothing has changed just because Barrack has secured the nomination. There's still a long way to go and a lot more volunteering and donating to be done. Once Barrack is elected those who have served the campaign best will be rewarded and before you know it, the mid-terms will be here and we can help donate and volunteer for those. Then we will really start creating a new kind of government and a new kind of politics - and a new world in which we can all be proud to live.

avatar

I don't mind the emails and I don't mind the "donate" (I almost typed "donut").

I know we all fancy ourselves as better strategists than DPflouffe, "Axe," Steve Hildebrand (could that have been your Steve H.?), Bob Gibbs, Bob Burton and the rest of the crew. But they seem to have done okay so far.

I'd suggest going to -- all together now -- www.barackobama.com (LOL! that was for the former Hillary supporters!) and look for other news and info about what is going on there.

I'd rather have the real skinny -- videos, pictures and news -- from the campaign than contrived emails.

But hey... that's just me.
