McCain: "I Will Never Surrender In Iraq".....to whom?
Speaking before a group, McCain recently strongly avowed - twice - that he would never surrender in Iraq. This begs the question: to whom would he never surrender? To Maliki's government? To Sadr's militia? To the handful of insurgents planting IEDs? If McCain was pressed to answer this, I'd wager he'd say Al Queda, which most knowledgeable observers say is a very tiny presence, but which McCain and Bush believe lurk under every stone.
In truth, McCain has conflated surrender with troop withdrawal. For him, any servicemen leaving Iraq equals a U.S. defeat. Couple this with the ill defined metrics for success (we'll stand down when they stand up; success is a fully functional Iraqi government) and McCain truly is preaching an One Hundred Year War.
Mix in McCain's and Bush's recent criticism of the new GI bill. For them, 3 years of service, even in a combat zone, is not sufficient sacrifice for a service man or woman to receive a college education. Massive deficit-causing tax cuts for the wealthiest remain a top priority for the Right; a chance for a better future for the folks actually fighting for this country requires a bit more sacrifice, please.
McCain is the wrong man to head the military at this time. We need a leader who can correctly access the situation, who can set honorable, clearly defined and achievable metrics for success, who can avoid the sophmoric "patriotic" chest beating; and who has the courage to take decisive action regardless of personal consequence. That ain't McCain.

I googled McCain, as well as his father and grandfather to try to understand his take on patriotism, honor and victory. Cursory reading revealed that he has: a) a precedent, vis a vis Navy loyalty to his father, to ignore ineptitude by calling it victory (his dad's promotions in spite of number of missed targets as WWII submarine commander); as he has: b) a family tradition to uphold to soldier on, in complete denial in the face of calamity, by calling it honor (parents went to a dinner party right after hearing that McCain had been shot down and was POW, and did not mention it.) These facts are just the tip of the McCain decision-making iceberg, or, more appropriately, a sign of the molten lava ready to explode in McCain the volcano. Not the family history, or psychological profile, one would regard as ideal in the president of a country who wants to end a war.

McCain's family history also led to his acceptance into the Naval Academy as a legacy enrollee. McCain admits he was a lousy high school student, and he finished 5th from the bottom of a class of nearly 900 at the Naval Academy. Having once worn a uniform is not qualification to become Commander In Chief. Intelligence and competency come to mind...

So true. I'd have to look it up again, but I think McCain's father was also at the bottom of his USNA class. And his father was impetuous. For example: in addition to his poor "hit" record on torpedo firings (which might imply jumping the gun in the moment) apparently his father also went AWOL to elope, rather than going through channels to get nearly guaranteed approval for time off. Not a good DNA precedent for a Commander-in-Chief who, in the moment, might order a bombing, rather than going through the channels of getting approval from Congress.
