McCain: Darn New-Fangled Contraptions!

avatar

In an interview, Senator McCain was asked his preference:  "Mac or PC".

His response: "Neither.  I am a (sic) illiterate who has to rely on my wife..."

Really?  In the age of the Internet where nobody under the age of 30 can conceive of a time without computers, you can't so much as type an e-mail or run a simple web search?  In a time where a huge percentage of the population gets there political news from said computers, you can't even browse around to see the plethora of information that's out there?  You've REALLY never taken the time to learn about these new fangled contraptions, huh?

Case closed on why this man should never be President.  Oh sure there are countless other reasons but if this man can't even log on to a flippin computer, should he be the one to answer the phone at 3 AM?  Would he even know what the phone is?

"Dear, where's that ringin sound a-comin' from?  It sounds like it's a-comin from this here blinkin thang.  Whoo-doggie, lookit that!  It's like somethin I saw in 'Frisco at the World's Fair back in 1915!"

40%+ of the American people are ready to entrust the world's most complex government and economy to a man who has to ask his wife how to left-click?

I can sympathize with him, my 91 year old grandmother has in most respects all of her faculties but she also displays a hesitancy to try new technology. When you're at that age where you feel daunted by new technology you're ready for retirement and it probably isn't the best time to be starting a new job.

I think it is also seriously disturbing since the government has a very large impact on the regulation of the internet and copyright. How is he going to handle net neutrality, copyright protection, internet taxation, standards and monpoly regulation when he hasn't learnt the first thing about computers. No I don't think the president has to be an expert on everything but he does need to be able to quickly learn enough on a subject so that he can understand what his advisers are telling him. The inability to learn how to use a computer shows an inflexibility of the mind that would be disturbing in a president.

"The inability to learn how to use a computer shows an inflexibility of the mind that would be disturbing in a president. "

Bingo. You nailed it.

My 85-year-old aunt uses a PC, and has for about 15 years. Keeps her accounts on it, pays bills, finds stuff on YouTube, and does tons of emailing.

And when she started to lose her sight due to macular degeneration she took classes to learn how to get audio text, signed up with a blind program to get special software, and got a big ol' magnifier to help her.

She's no whiz, but she's a competent adult who didn't freeze in time simply because she was getting old.

Give John "Keating 5" McCain credit for knowing what he does. After all he was in his late teens when they invented dirt.

If I'm not mistaken, a certain former president who's name and face have been much in the news lately, is also computer-averse.

He doesn't even use e-mail, I hear.

His name: Bill Clinton.

[If I'm wrong on this, please correct me.]

Being computer averse doesn't mean he's computer illiterate. I'd bet my eye-teeth that Bill knows the URL to some pretty juicy web sites. ;)
