McCain as Bob Dole

McCain had a choice when the general election began: run as Ronald Reagan or run as Bob Dole. To my surprise, McCain has chosen Bob Dole all the way. Perhaps, it really wasn't a choice that McCain would come off angry, mean, cranky and dismissive of the young whippersnapper who has not earned the right to challenge him for the top job.

Wherever Dole campaigned, his poll numbers went down. Near the end, his campaign struggled to find places he could go where he wouldn't hurt himself so badly. I see a similarity with McCain who recently spent time in Ohio, PA and FL. Judging by the recent polling in those states, he is clearly suffering from the Dole phenomenon.

You see, over the years McCain has become the best-known senator in the country, although the public doesn't really "know" McCain. The image of him fails to live up to the reality of him as an unattractive and uninspiring candidate. Perhaps he should just go on vacation for the next five months. It looks like the only thing he can do to even have a chance of winning.

SSssssshhhhh!! His campaign doesn't seem to know what it's doing wrong. Amazing, isn't it?? Well, maybe not. The Republican Party's response to its demise is to cling more tightly to its losing positions.

Interesting note about the similarities to Bob Dole's campaign.

It's gotta be demoralizing for McCain and Co. to campaign in those three states and drop in the polls. They don't have much choice but to attack and everytime they do it seems to backfire. They've got nothing personally on Barack and the policy differences all favor our side.

For instance even if they were able to make the "9/10 mindset" stick to him (and they can't) most voters prefer it to McCain's mindless warmongering.

I can't wait until McCain's speech at the Republican convention where he implores Americans to vote for him because we must "win" in Iraq. Win what? Acquiescence to military bases we don't need? Contracts for 4 big oil companies who will ship that oil to nearby Europe? An Iraqi government allied with Iran?

Thanks but no thanks John.

More than his insistence that we "must win" in Iraq, I'm really puzzled by his claim that he will never surrender. Surrender to whom? We invaded their country.
