Maybe NOW we'll get the edit feature
I don't remember how to screen capture, so pardon me if I screw this up, but right now on the main page Josh has a (mistaken?) double post.
Until now, we'd only seen such slips in the Cafe, but it seems we're not alone!
Maybe now they'll feel our pain and let us edit!
(Light pouring, choirs singing, etc.)
And if the link didn't work, my apologies - it's not like we can preview to test our links...(ohh!...idea light bulb!).

It doesn't work. How sad. I swear it's there! Two Wexler posts stacked on top of each other! *sigh*

I'll back you up :) I see it too, right on the main page.

burnedoutdem, re: it didn't work,
I looked at your url. Looks like you know how to do a screenshot but don't realize that that's only the first step, you only have it on your computer. For it to come up from a link, for everyone else to see, the picture (screenshot in this case,) has to be loaded somewhere on the internet. You'd have to upload it to a place like Flicker (or like Customer0012 used, Image Shack) then that's the url you would use.

Oh, yeah. It's been ages since I've done this and that's a necessary step...but if I'd had PREVIEW I could have tried the link and eventually would have figured it out...so, yeah.

Actually, that would have been one case where preview wouldn't have helped you since your browser on your computer can read files off the same computer.

I saw it too. A double post on the TPM frontpage.
This software is awful. It really is. It's worse than anything I can remember on the internet, worse than any ancient forum or message board.
If TPM really paid for such software, it must have been because the software engineer who made this is a close friend/relative fo Josh's. That's the only reason I can come up with.

I'd also like to add that being able to do stuff like this is simply dumb.
CHANGE THE SOFTWARE! AGAIN! UNTIL YOU GET IT RIGHT!

Heh. Cool. How'd you do that?
June 10, 2008 9:34 PM | Reply | Permalink
Cookie editing. Pretty innocuous, but I just wanted to illustrate how shoddy this software is.
June 10, 2008 9:37 PM | Reply | Permalink
Heh. Are you implying you can post under his account when you do that?
June 10, 2008 10:10 PM | Reply | Permalink
Given enough time, and number crunching yes.
I can already switch to another user account without logging in as them.
June 10, 2008 10:48 PM | Reply | Permalink
I'd like to point out that the account that I can get into without logging into is mine (Customer0013). I'm not trying to be a script kiddie or an internet jackass.

I've about had it with TPM's software. I think I'll just avoid posting anything more than a line or two.
Issues:
My avatar disappeared and couldn't be uploaded for hours.
No preview/edit on posts or blogs.
Continuously having to log back in, often losing the post you were replying to.
Writing up a long blog and getting a Movable Type error upon posting.
Posts are truncated for no apparent reason.
No way to know when someone has replied to a post without digging through the whole thread again.
Threads disappear after 24 hours no matter how popular.
Nasty, racist trolls are allowed to thrive.
Gotta wonder if it's worth the trouble.

Xcellent! Can you send this directly to the man/woman behind the TPM curtain so the switch can be pulled to correct all these issues?
June 10, 2008 9:43 PM | Reply | Permalink
They'd have to completely redo the site AGAIN. This one is based on Movable Type. If you Google "Movable Type Sucks" you'll get 130,000 hits.
June 10, 2008 9:48 PM | Reply | Permalink
He won't have to, because your crappy troll has magically fixed all the issues!!!
The point is that plenty of websites, twice or more the size of TPM, have a sane and usable post/blog/comment system that works. Why TPM can't have such a system is beyond me.
Sorry if I get worked up about this, but it really is that bad.

It's funny, but not why you think. He's not in the same situation as us, ya know--he CAN delete and edit anything he wants, as can the contributors. This recent thread about Steve Clemons doing it is proof of that.
Which I always presumed was the case as it is the case with most of this kind of software....which is why I never understood why it was supposedly such a big deal for the techies to change it so that member posters can have editing, too....seems to me it was just an installation situation that made it that we can't, that they complicated it....that it would have been simpler to make all posters equal in what they could do, rather than have different groups be able to edit and delete their posts. Perhaps it is the situation that you had the choice of allowing editing of the entire site or no editing (original wiki style) and you don't want to give that to everyone, but I don't see how an alteration to that limiting the power to one's own posts should be such a big deal, even if it's not just a "turn on/off switch" on the software.

oops link fixed, I hope:
this recent thread is proof
And no, I did not screw up the first link on purpose to make a point. :-)
June 10, 2008 10:54 PM | Reply | Permalink
but if you had PREVIEW you could have checked the link and fixed it before posting. Am I right?

Well I think you are right and I think I am right. But perhaps all of those other sites we use on the internet without problems are just a figment of our imagination, all a dream.
Perhaps we are wrong, perhaps users are useless impediments to this MT software, users don't matter, we just get in its way. The MT software code exists as a thing of beauty in itself and tinkering with it would be a travesty. User friendliness and filling audience needs, what jejune bourgeois concepts, the audience should be formed to fit the software, not the other way around. What's wrong with us, anyways, don't we like the new masthead, it's so elegant.....

Thank you. A number of times my posts have been truncated, most frustratingly tonight, when I spent a lot of time writing a post only to find out it was cut off after the first paragraph.
The other day, I kept getting an error message saying my post was not going through, and then it showed up six or more times.
I really enjoy the dialogue here, but at times it feels like more trouble than it's worth.

I hear you - which is why the title of my last post (after three tries) was:
The Effing Jazzy Rule A Cautionary Tale Again without the Effing Fonts & Styles I Can't Figure Out!
Very frustrating and not user friendly. Preview would be really nice.

The link points to a file on your hard drive, which of course, is no use to us.
Then again, now I know that you are a Windows XP user whose name is Will and that you have a folder on your desktop solely devoted to the archiving of Geese.
To your point, I, as everyone else, agree that TPM is a god-awful site to post to. I can't even upload a avatar without getting an error message, and since when is a "new thread" the same as a "blog post?" It's stifled discourse, and further pissed off a group of people who are usually already pissed of about some thing or another anyway!
"Fixing it" is not the right option. They need to scrap the whole system and start anew...
June 11, 2008 12:40 PM | Reply | Permalink
Funnier than that - I'm not Will! I don't know who that is :)
But there is a folder devoted to the absurd...
