General admission at Federal Hall (a first-hand account of McCain '08 in action)

avatar

I went to the John McCain event at Federal Hall in New York City this evening.  It's not because I am a McCain supporter - I assure you I am not.  I just happen to go to the New York Sports Club next door to Federal Hall, and I am easily distracted.
I noticed the motorcade immediately, which reminded me that there was a McCain event to begin with.  There weren't any campaign posters advertising the appearance anywhere.  I was intrigued, and really only want to try and get my picture taken if McCain worked the rope line.  They told me to go around back because I would have a better chance there.  When I got to the back I noticed that there was a line to get in, and there were signs posted that said it was a ticket-holder event only.
I asked if there were additional tickets available, and they said they were completely full.  I waited around for a few minutes with other hopefuls, and eventually they let us in.  It was a fairly straightforward campaign stop, but I noticed these three things that could affect the general election:
1.  John McCain looks like a lizard
2.  He does not know how to tailor a message.  There is a difference between pandering (coming up with b******t to tell the audience for the express purpose of getting elected) and tailoring your message (omitting ideas when talking in front of an audience that will be hostile to said idea).  McCain should learn that before railing against economists for not supporting his gas tax holiday, especially when only a stone-throw from the stock exchange.  Men in business suits made up a significant percentage of the audience (again, we were in the heart of the financial district).  These were people who understand economics and indeed profit of economic research.  The audience was noticeably chilly during that part of the speech, and I also noticed that McCain did not pause for applause.  If he wants to appeal to voters he needs to learn to tailor his message, and that means not telling a room full of stock brokers that you don't trust economists.
3.  John McCain does not generate excitement.  What else is new, right?  But you would think that filling 200 seats in downtown New York City in a weekday at 7pm should be no sweat - even for a tickets-only event.  Right?  Wrong.  I was astonished that I was able to get in.  John McCain is as close to rock star status as most Republicans can ever hope to get.  Everybody knows the McCain story (for the people who can't read and thus haven't read the McCain bio in the news will soon be able to get it as a children's book courtesy of Meghan McCain).  His biography alone should fill an auditorium ten times as big as today's venue.  But after the ticket holders went inside tonight's event they realized they didn't have enough people to fill all the seats.  They couldn't find enough McCain supporters to fill 200 seats!  So they let in a dozen people (myself included) from the street.  Even more astonishing is that I saw numerous McCain staffers sitting down filling up space (staffers normally stand on the periphery).  Clearly they were not able to fill the place, even with passers by, and used staffers to fill in the rest so it would not look empty broadcast live on Fox.
These things tell me that not only is he a bad campaigner, but his lousy campaigning is turning people off so much that he has trouble filling a small space.  I may be completely misreading the situation, but that was my feeling from inside.  If anyone has another take, I'd love to hear it in the comments section.

McCain's daughter wrote a book?

Is it anything like the book that Jenna Bush and her mom wrote?

Did Bush read it? Did McCain read it? Does it matter anymore? I could make comparisons to "My Pet Goat" but that's been done so many times before, it no longer matters.

Maybe I should write a book. I'd call it, "The World According to Lis". And it would be all about how the world changed in the year 2008 because of people other than, but like, me.

I know so many people at TPM who could help write it...and so many others who would help to diss it, that I think we could end up with something that would fall somewhere near the truth, if we only had the guts to write it together.

Ooops.

Wait.

We've already been doing that.

Carry on.

Lis - I think it's a great idea. A book showcasing TPM posts on the election. There'd be drama, comedy, sex, war, drugs (or at least the meanderings of those who have to be on something hallucinogenic to have those attitudes and thoughts). Seriously, so many of the postings/comments are smart, witty and thought provoking.
Think of how much fun it would be to name the chapters based on 'topic'. There'd have to be a WTH chapter.
Oh, and 'Cynic Press' - thanks for the post - I recommended. GOOD!

Thanks for this report.

So, any exciting Senate races going on? I'm only half-kidding. If the event you described is what McCain has in mind to keep himself occupied until November, well, we're better off to leave him to it and get on with other things.

I suspect that McCain expects to lose. I also suspect he enjoys running more than governing, so the outcome doesn't loom particularly large in his mind.

McCain is not a man of excessive reflection. He treats adversity with the balm of perpetual motion.

From the WaPo piece linked to below. It's a good read.

you wanna know why mcsame is having trouble filling small halls ???

cuz most of us wouldn't embarrass our mothers by being seen at a repuglitard gathering

my momma taught me better than that, and she'd kick my ass if I embarrassed her like that

I bet she also told you about calling people names, too.

Until we dispense with the "repuglitard" crap, we will have a hard time attracting those disaffected republicans we need to gain a governing majority and to get the current crop of bastards out of Congress.

Remember, Nixon was way more progressive than Clinton, policy-wise. So was Eisenhower and Teddie Roosevelt and Lincoln and Jefferson. The republican party is every bit as important to our history as the democratic party, current leadership notwithstanding.

We need to be the Grown Up party who don't use childish, made-up names to discuss serious, adult issues. If you must, use "neocon" because it more accurately describes the cabal that took over the GOP. Don't paint with so broad of a brush.

We hate it when "they" do that to our side right?

I have to 2nd that.

Understand I feel like saying that, especially after 7+ years of criminality and ineptitude festering at the White House. In fact, I still slip up once in a while.

But here's the thing: there are a lot of unhappy Republicans out there. Not just unhappy about their prospects, but unhappy with what their party has become.

One of the families from my son's kindergarten class invited all the families over for a BBQ. The host - Dad - considers himself a Republican. We had a VERY interesting conversation. Long story short, he feels betrayed by Bush & Co. What was more interesting, is that many of the things he faulted the Republican party for had to do with the strong libertarian approach toward taking care of people, but also the authoritarian power grabs at the other end of the spectrum. When he talked about what the Republicans should do, it sounded an awful lot like what Democrats have stood for: helping people in need, not giving a free ride to the rich/corporations, addressing global warming, etc.

Granted, this is only one story, and not all Republicans are like this fellow. But many like him are ready to make a change. Like him, there are are other folks out there who call themselves Republicans, but on the inside, they're really closer to Democrats. Now would be a good time to give them a listen, share your values, and see if you don't have more in common than they or you think.

But that can't happen when we lump them into one group and call 'em names. ("McWar"? Sure. "Repuglitards"? Maybe not.)

Too bad she evidently didn't spend much time on grammar, spelling, proofreading, capitalization or punctuation.

Sad about McCain.

Thanks, Jason, for trying to get TPM onto the generous side. Mr. Obama would appreciate that, since it's the essence of what he's trying to do.

Exactly right. I know a lot of republicans who I have a lot of respect for. I know that sort of shit would piss them off big time and get them into a fighting mood. I figure why piss people off unnecessarily and what has fighting with each other ever gotten us? Thanks for noticing!

You make an excellent point about what McCain looks like in person. I saw him at an event here in NM over the Memorial Day weekend and he does NOT look healthy. Something isn't quite right. I saw him in 2000 and he looks awful compared to just eight years ago. These last few years have not been kind to him.

The "maverick" really isn't. He standard Republican nonsense and talking points. If you want to know what his stump speech is listen to any Republican pundit or shill on the talk shows. That is it. No there, there.

I'm going to ask the question for asking's sake, since it seems there has been zero talk about it:

If John McCain's health should fail him during the campaign, who is the GOP's Plan B?

Your description made me think about McCain's invitation to campaign with Obama. Does he need Obama to fill the hall?

Excellent point.

avatar

I think he needs Obama to fill the gas tank too.

Maybe he really is a lizard. An alien lizard. That would explain alot.

KZ - I am convinced that Cindy is from another planet. Possibly having something to do with the Phoenix Lights that everyone saw over Phoenix a few years back. If John is an Alien Lizard, there could be even more to this theory. Very, very interesting...

That's dead-on! Cindy is Diana!

I can't get over the thought of a children's book about getting shot down, held prisoner and tortured.

I'm sure this sort of ticketed/staffer audience is what McCain wants for his joint townhall style events. Fill the room up with partisans so that the two camps can throw bombs at the opposing candidate or softballs to their own guy. I think they should take a cue from the Untouchables and at the last moment switch the audience with the audience for David Letterman. That way the audience couldn't be stacked.

"Clearly they were not able to fill the place, even with passers by, and used staffers to fill in the rest so it would not look empty broadcast live on Fox."

I think his campaign staff simply miscalculated. They promoted this small-venue, exclusive event only within certain party-faithful channels. Then they failed to determine what proportion of the first 200 ticket buyers were really "I can't attend but here's my check" supporters, or to factor in some % for no-shows. Odds are they'd been telling people for days that the event was "sold out."

Still - it's hard to imagine Obama (or Clinton) booking a 200-seat hall.

I started saying Saturday that the media has it backwards (I know, quelle surprise). Hours of discourse spent on why Obama hasn't sewn up the election with all the fundamentals going for the D's and not a minute on how this former unknown, of limited experience, who is also, *ahem* of African descent was at break-even with the best possible candidate that the GOP could have nominated and, who by dumb luck, fell into the deal as the other GOP campaigns imploded around him. Obama beat the best known woman-in-politics in the world and, in the space of a week, he's flirting nationally with the 50 percentile routinely while the absolute, bar-none best that the Republicans can offer treads water in the mid-40s nationally. Is Obama that good? Are the Republicans that bad? Both. Thank God.
