Floating gulags? 1000s illegally held on US prison ships
When will it end? The Guardian reports that according to human rights organization Reprieve,
The United States is operating "floating prisons" to house those
arrested in its war on terror, according to human rights lawyers, who
claim there has been an attempt to conceal the numbers and whereabouts
of detainees.

This is so shocking it is hard to believe. But my experience for the last seven years has been that the most shocking reports have more credibility than the pious professions that come out of any member of this administration. Truly shocking, revolting and disturbing.

This has been reported before, but not so fully. I just did a quick google search: Human Rights first reported it in 2004, and I know it's been mentioned in some articles about rendition. As Digby says, your tax dollars at work!

The idea of "political prisoners" in the 1960's stood as undeniable proof to the American public that Communist China and the USSR were evil poxes on the face of the earth, acting contrary to all American ideals. I find it fitting that the Bush administration, openly embracing torture while defending its right to secretly determine who is tortured, is hiding political detainees on a ship named USS Bataan. I also cannot help but think of all the Americans who gave their lives in WWII to fight "evil" expansionist nations which were guilty of exactly the same crimes the Bush administration is guilty of. No better proof of this exists than the statements by those who conducted the Nuremburg war crimes trials.
