All Hail idiotic!
I would like to publicly thank the poster known as idiotic, whoever he/she/it really is, for a most valuable contribution to this primary season.
idiotic's EXCELLENT NEWS!!! has been the longest running joke I've ever experienced. The sparse economy and bold (I'm tempted to say capital) style of idiotic's humor has never failed to amuse. A work of comedic genius, idiotic's surgical strikes have not missed the mark once.
Imitators could not hold a candle to idiotic. Their posts never had the flair and razor sharp with of genuine idiotic. However, the EXCELLENT wave (dubbed the 'idiotic wave' by some) has taken idiotic's creation to the next level and provided a wonderful platform for teamwork and community building.
Thank you, idiotic. We are now eagerly awaiting EXCELLENT NEWS!! FOR MCCAIN!!!

Seconded. Idiotic provides some much-needed levity in here - and throughout the web, really. Keep it up!

Yeah, I'm going to have to disagree with the idea that there should be levity "throughout the web". After all, the internet is serious business.

Agreed...I don't think I laughed at four words so many times in my life. He will be sorely missed.

What do you mean, missed? Has idiotic been abducted by aliens or something? I don't think idiotic's work is done - not this election season, and maybe not ever.

Agreed! Idiotic only has to switch one word, after all, and go on for the next six months!!

Idiotic is truly a cultural icon - so much more than a one-hit wonder, he/she/it has captured the mood, and the hearts, of a generation.

Ever notice how idiotic is just like Obama? Cool, collected, never up, never down, and an EXCELLENT speech-maker.
codegen86, your handle reminds me of a group research project I worked on in the late 70s and early 80s, in one of my numerous life phases. A gigantic compiler writer system, much better than the primitive yacc-lexx of the time.
We built an integrated LALR(1) parser-generator (PARGEN) that facilitated semantics, both in the grammar or in the parser, and an extractor to remove the grammar with its semantics from the parser in the form of a grammar to input into PARGEN. That allowed for iterative enhancement, the buzz word of the day.
As well we had an integrated code generator CODEGEN that accepted as intermediate language the output of PARGEN and that also had the extraction capability -- we could extract the code generator specification with its associate semantics (that produced the appropriate machine language), modify it, and input it iteratively into CODEGEN. The whole thing was written in Ada, the only general purpose language with encapsulation capabilities at the time.
We had fun, both creating and extracting grant numerous dollars from NASA. We even used our product, or a contractor firm did, to redo HALMAT for the space shuttle. Now of course you kids have it easy. No punched cards, no non-existent IDE, no add/delete/modify editors, no central printers (for an entire research center) that functioned with couriers, no graphic terminals (much less microcomputers) , and not even any coding sheets.
I assume your 86 points to code generated for Intel's family. Mine would point to age.
June 6, 2008 11:33 AM | Reply | Permalink
Yup, the 86 in my nick is neither my age nor the year of my birth, it refers to the x86 family of processors. I'm not an expert by any means but I've done a fair amount of maintenance work on an x86 compiler, both the front end (C language) and the back end (code generator aka codegen or just cg).
I don't think many people know what 'codegen86' might stand for :)
