A Song For The Obamanauts
Unpacking today. Ran across a Robbie Robertson CD. Put it on. Thought about my friends on the good ship Obama. Wish I could play it for you, but I don't know how to do that here. Goes
There's gonna be a change of season
Indian Summer look around and it's gone.
Why you wanna save the best for last?
We grow up so slowly and grow old so fast.
We don't talk about forever
We just catch it while we can
And if I grab on to the moment
Don't let it slip away out of my hand.
What about now?
Forget about tomorrow.
It's too far away
What about now?
Close your eyes
Don't talk of yesterday
It's too far away, too far away
What about now?
I'm coming out of the shadows
I'm getting off of this one way street.
Blue memories they just gather dust
Leave them in the rain they turn into rust.
Did you see the march to freedom?
Did you ever see Savannah moon
In the middle of the night?
All the people walking in a line
Said to the man is it my time?
What about now?
Forget about tomorrow
It's too far away
What about now?
Just close your eyes
Don't talk of yesterday
It's too far away, too far away
What about now?
In the walk of a lifetime
When you know it's the right time
Bring it to me darlin'
I can't wait until the ship comes in
I can't wait starting all over again
The errors of a wise man
Make the rules for a fool.
What about now?
Forget about tomorrow
It's too far away
Don't talk of yesterday
It's too far away, too far away
It's all about now right now
Don't break the spell
All over by tomorrow
Don't break the spell
Bon voyage, my friends! Don't break the spell.

Just don't be tellin' us this is yer Last Waltz g-Lad.
Robbie say Sweet Fire of Love. Not afraid anymore. Not alone anymore. Not the same anymore. Crossin' new waters, makin' new bridges, holdin' back the flood.
And Robbie speak not just for his fellow Mohawk-Jewish-Canucks.... much tho we love him. The Boy was always best with a Band. And that Southern Hibbing Boy, whassis name.
And take a look over yonder, Apollo in the distance.
Fer you and y'all.
Didn't we break the silence
Didn't we fear the storm
Didn't we move the earth
Didn't we shoot for the sky
Didn't we catch the spirits
Didn't we fall together
Didn't we die for love
Days on the run, Nights in hiding
Hoping that you were, The healing inside me
Breathe in the sweet fire of love
I'm not afraid anymore
Sweet, sweet fire
I'm not alone anymore
Breathe in the sweet fire of love
I'm not the same anymore
The sweet fire of love
Didn't we cross new waters
Didn't we mix new blood
Didn't we build brand new bridges
Didn't we hold back the flood
Broken idols by the side of the road
Luck didn't fall on the side of the law
Here she comes a-shining like a light
Here she comes salvation in the night
Breathe in the sweet fire of love
I'm not afraid anymore
Sweet, sweet fire
I'm not alone anymore
Breathe in the sweet fire of love
I'm not the same anymore
The sweet fire of love

gotta be Daniel Lanois (at least in the mid-80's.) now that boy is an authentic weird & wild genius. made some of the best u2, dylan, nevilles, p gabriel, emmy lou albums ever - albeit having brian eno on hand didn't hurt. an original cajun/acadien, raised in a steeltown (hamilton) - and then bringing out soul like that?
life is full of surprises - on his case, happy ones.

Some of the ultimate background vocals - Flo & Eddie on Zappa at Fillmore East, the black chick vocals on some Lou Reed live concert in Paris where they start to do Walk On The Wild Side but after 20 minutes of ranting and doo-wopping never quite get around to it (the girls do steal the show though).

Ok, if we're doing song lyrics - this is the one that seems to be most about the Obama movement to me:
Let it Be Me
By Indigo Girls
Sticks and stones
Battle zones
A single light bulb
On a single thread for the black
Sirens wail
History fails
Rose-colored glass
Begins to age and crack
While the politicians shadowbox
The power ring
In an endless split decision
Never solve anything
From a neighbors distant land
I heard the strain of the common man
Let it be me
(this is not a fighting song)
Let it be me
(not a wrong for a wrong)
Let it be me
If the world is night
Shine my life like a light
Well the world seems spent
And the president
Has no good idea
Of who the masses are
Well I'm one of them
And I'm among friends
Were trying to see beyond
The fences in our own backyards
Ive seen the kingdoms blow
Like ashes in the winds of change
But the power of truth
Is the fuel for the flame
So the darker the ages get
Theres a stronger beacon yet
Let it be me
(this is not a fighting song)
Let it be me
(not a wrong for a wrong)
Let it be me
If the world is night
Shine my life like a light
In the kind word you speak
In the turn of the cheek
When your vision stays clear
In the face of your fear
Then you see turning out a light switch
Is their only power
When we stand like spotlights
In a mighty tower
All for one and one for all
Then we sing the common call
Let it be me
(this is not a fighting song)
Let it be me
(not a wrong for a wrong)
Let it be me
If the world is night
Shine my life like a light

Well, I think it would be most fun to cast the movie here. Have to think about who could be Jason and Medea. Would like to keep it local. Leave Obama out of it. The Golden Fleece? The Presidency I think. But you'd know what you're looking for better than I would. What do you think?

Articleman is Jason with Ghengis along as his sidekick, seemingly loyal, but seething with envy, waiting for a chance to take Jason's place.
Have to send you, Sean and GFTB along as part of the main force, in case there is any real fighting.
Shanghai Desidero to stalk the deck, muttering and foretelling doom.
Ben as the prophet. Bee as the wise counselor too often ignored. Cypher the musician. artappraiser the physician.
The rest of the Obamanauts, save the ones you elevate, are consigned to the hold, chained to the oars.
Allsburg and elliotness are too young to go. You can sacrifice them on the beach to appease the storm gods.

O wicked one,
From under burkah of shock pink
I say, my turn to spin the bone.
Drink framboise beer and go to the brink,
With game called "Jason’s Run."
Jason of the Argonauts @TPM. A Game.
Jason = Joshblog for Jason because his avatar is beautiful. TenaX as Medea {BTW, Medea is one of my favorite characters in Greek myths}. Kashy as Telemon. Desi as the able helmsman - Euphemus. A host of cats and dogs remain on board to assist Desi maintain order. Billy Glad as Orpheus to get the ship past the Siren Islands. The babies, smurf, Mr. Crankypants, 18th and 19th century avatars, scantily clad avatars and assorted cartoon and vista avatars all sacrifice themselves for the good of the ship while crossing the Siren Islands. Articleman and Levi as Boreads. MonicaL avatar as a Atalanta wannabe but in fact is allied to them. Genghis as Heracles.
June 17, 2008 2:01 AM | Reply | Permalink
That posted too soon. More explanations:
I picked the characters because of the particular characteristics I pick up from their posts. The particular emotion they consistently exhibit. Genghis as Heracles fits. The Boreads (Articleman and Levy) are the brothers Calais and Zetes who did a good deed. Both TPM'rs appear to be good hearted people. Monica as Atalanta is attached to Levy. She likes his hat. Jason and Kashy also fit their roles as fighters on the ship.

One of my all time favorite lyrics. This song pretty much says it all for me.
This is all I ask
As I approach the prime of my life
I find I have the time of my life
Learning to enjoy at my leisure
All the simple pleasures
And so I happily concede
That this is all I ask
This is all I need
Beautiful girls, walk a little slower when you walk by me
Lingering sunsets, stay a little longer with the lonely sea
Children everywhere, when you shoot at bad men, shoot at me
Take me to that strange, enchanted land grown-ups seldom understand
Wandering rainbows, leave a bit of color for my heart to own
Stars in the sky, make my wish come true before the night has flown
And let the music play as long as there's a song to sing
And I will stay younger than Spring
Words and Music by Gordon Jenkins

Nas-
They forgot us on the block
Got us in the box
Solitary confinement
How violent are these cops?
They need an early retirement
How many rallies will I watch?
I ain't got it in me to march
I got a semi to spark
The game's in a drought
Public housing, projects
Cooking up in the Pyrex
My set, my click
Either getting money
Or running from homicide trial
That's if they ain't died yet
Trying to be rich
Still I'm pledging allegiance
A predicate felon, a ghetto leader
Lending my poetical genius
To whoever may need it
I bleed this from Queensbridge
Now living with my feet up
Never defeated
So a president's needed
Y'know these colored folks and Negroes
Hate to see one of their own succeeding
America, suprise us
And let a black man guide us
Whats the black pres thinkin on election night
Is it how can I protect my life?
Protect my wife? Protect my rights?
Every other president was nottin' less than white
'Cept Thoman Jefferson and mixed indian blood
and calvin coolers
KKK is like 'what the fuck', loadin' they guns up
Im loadin' mine too, Ready to ride
Cause im ridin with my crew
He dies - we die too
But on a positive side, I think Obama provides
Hope - and challenges minds
Of all races and colours to erase the hate
And try and love one another, so many political snakes
We in need of a break, Im thinkin' I can trust this brotha
But will he keep it way real ?
Every innocent n!gga in jail - gets out on appeal
When he wins - will he really care still?
I feel
Say a prayer for "do we have to?"
You ain't right, Jeremiah Wrong pastor
In love with a slave master
Sincerely yours
USA most brave rapper
Jesse car-jacker
Uncle Tom-kidnapper
Ask around
Bentley Coupe off the richter
B!tch-called-life, I pimped her
What?
Politics, politricks
Klan-shooter
Deacon for defense
Progress-producer
Nothing on the stove
Your survival-booster
Gotta do what we gotta do
We ain't got no governors coming through - to help
Anything we need done, we gotta do for self
New-improved JFK on the way
It ain't the 60's again
Niqqas ain't hippies again
We ain't falling for the same traps
Standing on the balconies
Where they shot the King at
McCain got apologies
Ain't nobody hearing that
People need honesty

Yeah, I'm a music fiend, so I can't resist. This song to me comes from a similar place as Obama's words, I feel:
I was dreaming in my dreaming
of an aspect bright and fair
and my sleeping it was broken
but my dream it lingered near
in the form of shining valleys
where the pure air recognized
and my senses newly opened
I awakened to the cry
that the people / have the power
to redeem / the work of fools
upon the meek / the graces shower
it's decreed / the people rule
The people have the power
The people have the power
The people have the power
The people have the power
Vengeful aspects became suspect
and bending low as if to hear
and the armies ceased advancing
because the people had their ear
and the shepherds and the soldiers
lay beneath the stars
exchanging visions
and laying arms
to waste / in the dust
in the form of / shining valleys
where the pure air / recognized
and my senses / newly opened
I awakened / to the cry
Refrain
Where there were deserts
I saw fountains
like cream the waters rise
and we strolled there together
with none to laugh or criticize
and the leopard
and the lamb
lay together truly bound
I was hoping in my hoping
to recall what I had found
I was dreaming in my dreaming
god knows / a purer view
as I surrender to my sleeping
I commit my dream to you
Refrain
The power to dream / to rule
to wrestle the world from fools
it's decreed the people rule
it's decreed the people rule
LISTEN
I believe everything we dream
can come to pass through our union
we can turn the world around
we can turn the earth's revolution
we have the power
People have the power ...
Or hear it here: People Have the Power

Elvis was a hero to most
But he never meant shit to me you see
Straight up racist that sucker was
Simple and plain
Mother fuck him and John Wayne
Cause I'm Black and I'm proud
I'm ready and hyped plus I'm amped
Most of my heroes don't appear on no stamps
Sample a look back you look and find
Nothing but rednecks for 400 years if you check
Don't worry be happy
Was a number one jam
Damn if I say it you can slap me right here
(Get it) lets get this party started right
Right on, c'mon
What we got to say
Power to the people no delay
To make everybody see
In order to fight the powers that be
Don't Believe the Hype

(yep, check out the Hillary reference, she's
down with the crew too)
Don't believe the hype - its a sequel
As an equal, can I get this through to you
My 98's boomin' with a trunk of funk
All the jealous punks can't stop the dunk
Comin' from the school of hard knocks
Some perpetrate, they drink Clorox
Attack the black, cause I know they lack exact
The cold facts, and still they try to Xerox
Leader of the new school, uncool
Never played the fool, just made the rules
Remember there's a need to get alarmed
Again I said I was a timebomb
In the daytime the radio's scared of me
'Cause I'm mad, plus I'm the enemy
They can't c'mon and play with me in primetime
'Cause I know the time, plus I'm gettin' mine
I get on the mix late in the night
They know I'm livin' right, so here go the mike, sike
Before I let it go, don't rush my show
You try to reach and grab and get elbowed
Word to herb, yo if you can't swing this
Just a little bit of the taste of the bass for you
As you get up and dance at the LQ
When some deny it, defy if I swing bolos
Then they clear the lane I go solo
The meaning of all of that
Some media is the whack
You believe it's true, it blows me through the roof
Suckers, liars get me a shovel
Some writers I know are damn devils
For them I say don't believe the hype
Yo Chuck, they must be on a pipe, right?
Their pens and pads I'll snatch
'Cause I've had it
I'm not an addict fiendin' for static
I'll see their tape recoreder and grab it
No, you can't have it back silly rabbit
I'm going' to my media assassin
Harry Allen, I gotta ask him
Yo Harry, you're a writer, are we that type?
Don't believe the hype
I got flavor and all those things you know
Yeah boy, part two bum rush and show
Yo Griff, get the green black red and
Gold down countdown to Armageddon
-88 you wait the S1Ws will
Rock the hard jams - treat it like a seminar
Teach the bourgeoise, and rock the boulevard
Some sau I'm negative
But they're not positive
But what I got to give...

Of course my pick for Obamanauts is The Who: Don't Get Fooled Again. Not that it matters.
We'll be fighting in the streets
With our children at our feet
And the morals that they worship will be gone
And the men who spurred us on
Sit in judgement of all wrong
They decide and the shotgun sings the song
I'll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around me
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
Then I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again
The change, it had to come
We knew it all along
We were liberated from the foe, that's all
And the world looks just the same
And history ain't changed
'Cause the banners, they all flown in the next war
I'll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around me
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
Then I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again
No, no!
I'll move myself and my family aside
If we happen to be left half alive
I'll get all my papers and smile at the sky
For I know that the hypnotized never lie
Do ya?
There's nothing in the street
Looks any different to me
And the slogans are replaced, by-the-bye
And the parting on the left
Is now the parting on the right
And the beards have all grown longer overnight
I'll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around me
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
Then I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again
Don't get fooled again
No, no!
Meet the new boss
Same as the old boss

gasket. i was waitin/wonderin who was gonna pull the trigger on that one. ya bastid you. here maybe better fer the circumstances - "one." nice thing with this song is it's fulla bitter, but cagey - so both sides can throw it at the other. but in the end (don't cringe) "we get to carry each other." and being irish and all, they probably got some cred on dealing with division. (tho i still like pete's guitar better. and smashin' shit up vs holding hands. but still.... times being what they are and all. "one.")
One (U2)
Is it getting better?
Or do you feel the same?
Will it make it easier on you now?
You got someone to blame
You say...
One love
One life
When it's one need
In the night
One love
We get to share it
Leaves you baby if you
Don't care for it
Did I disappoint you?
Or leave a bad taste in your mouth?
You act like you never had love
And you want me to go without
Well it's
Too late
Tonight
To drag the past out into the light
We're one, but we're not the same
We get to
Carry each other
Carry each other
One
Have you come here for forgiveness?
Have you come to raise the dead?
Have you come here to play Jesus?
To the lepers in your head
Did I ask too much?
More than a lot.
You gave me nothing,
Now it's all I got
We're one
But we're not the same
Well we
Hurt each other
Then we do it again
You say
Love is a temple
Love a higher law
Love is a temple
Love the higher law
You ask me to enter
But then you make me crawl
And I can't be holding on
To what you got
When all you got is hurt
One love
One blood
One life
You got to do what you should
One life
With each other
Sisters
Brothers
One life
But we're not the same
We get to
Carry each other
Carry each other
One
One

quinn esq,
Yes, I love the song One, but I don't think it applies to Obamanauts. It may well apply to black Americans, but that's quite different.
I don't read "bitter" into the Who song. I was 8 when it came out, and I think of it as prophetic, not bitter. I linked to the G8 concert rather than a '70s performance exactly because of the timelessness of the lyrics. I'm not bitter myself, and I'm happy to carry my share and more than my share, but I'm a realist. I grew up during a very cynical period in history. I am a product of my times.
Therefore, I dedicate this U2 song, With or Without You, to you, quinn esq. Consider it how I feel about Obamanauts. (This is a bad copy, but I remember how beautiful this video was when it came out.)
See the stone set in your eyes
See the thorn twist in your side
I wait for you
Sleight of hand and twist of fate
On a bed of nails she makes me wait
And I wait without you
With or without you
With or without you
Through the storm we reach the shore
You give it all but I want more
And I'm waiting for you
With or without you
With or without you
I can't live
With or without you
And you give yourself away
And you give yourself away
And you give
And you give
And you give yourself away
My hands are tied
My body bruised, she's got me with
Nothing to win and
Nothing left to lose
And you give yourself away
And you give yourself away
And you give
And you give
And you give yourself away
With or without you
With or without you
I can't live
With or without you
With or without you
With or without you
I can't live
With or without you
With or without you

fer you - Behind Blue Eyes

"When my fist clenches, crack it open
Before I use it and lose my cool
When I smile, tell me some bad news
Before I laugh and act like a fool
If I swallow anything evil
Put your finger down my throat
If I shiver, please give me a blanket
Keep me warm, let me wear your coat
No one knows what its like
To be the bad man
To be the sad man
Behind blue eyes"

There was this girl we used to hang out with. She was always pissing us off.
What pissed me off the most was that she would sit in the back of the car singing, in a mightily horrible voice, to songs that should not be sung to. At least not louder than the voice coming out of the speakers. We'd turn it up. She'd sing louder. On and on that went. We started purposely picking songs we didn't think she'd know the words too. I think that's why we started listening to Moby in the first place. It was summer. I remember having the windows down. There's certain songs now I can't listen to without remembering that.
She did that to Moby for me. Ruined it forever.

Just curious, where did you find the term "Obamanaut"?
I'm sure it must have arisen spontaneously in multiple places, but in my experience it was my brother Brad who coined it. It has been used as the handle for a sub-group of us hardcore Obama Rapid Responders.

Like most of the things I do, I came up with it one night, googled it, and found many had come up with it before me. It's been interesting to me to find that not many around here understand I intend it as homage, not ridicule. Hope you and your brother do.

I Envy The Wind: Lucinda Williams.
I envy the wind
That whispers in your ear
That howls through the winter
That freezes your fingers
That moves through your hair
And cracks your lips
That chills you to the bone
I envy the wind
I envy the rain
That falls on your face
That wets your eyelashes
and dampens your skin
And touches your tongue
And soaks through your shirt
And drips down your back
I envy the rain
I envy the sun
That brightens your summer
That warms your body
And holds you in her heat
That makes your days longer
And makes you hot
And makes you sweat
I envy the sun
I envy the wind, I envy the rain, I envy the sun, I envy the wind

I suppose you're right, quinn esq. The song's loaded. I always think about how Ira was left behind when Georgie died. Did you know that Ira didn't write for 3 years afterward? 3 years is a long time to be sad. For me, though, Ella lifts everything out of despair. I don't know how she does that, but it's the miracle of Ella.
How's this instead? Fun to watch.

Last night I had the strangest dream,
I never dreamed before.
There was strife in Mt Olympus' team
Athena's mad for war.
I should have run a different Game,
Now at midstream, got a Goddess to placate,
Never should have done the misname.
Could've visioned Athena for different take to create.
Greeks begging favors may not be welcome,
Just as Greeks bearing gifts can become toilsome.
O Wicked One, please forgive and pass the velum.
Accept this redux, while keeping dry thy talcum.
A ship of goodly construction.
Filled with dreams
Of a nation.
Where the crew sings an anthem,
Floating bulkhead, agleam.
Flying hearts, crimson.
Jason is TenaX. Lt. Heracles is Genghis. Desi manages the ship, reigning magnificently over cats and dogs, punishing all failures ruthlessly but with intellect, dispensing grog at will and yelling at spogs. Sundry avatars of cartoons, 18th and 19th century personages and babies and smurf, cranky, skanky peoples, etc, ready for sacrifice and living at the Poop of ship. Phoebe Fay is Telemon. Billy Glad as Cheiron. LisB is Castor and Bee is Pollux. Kashy as Theseus. Josuablog as Laertes. On the Top (platform on masthead) Articleman. BunKitty as Purser. The rest are Matelots. Monica will be the bulkhead avatar. ClearThinker as Medea. AdAbsurdum is Orpheus. TGFTB is Atalanta. Jade## is Peleus. CodeGen86 is Zetes, Hillarym is Kalais. The Blue-dude (who now masquerades as someone else) is Autolycus. Ben is Cytisorus. Alex39 is Phrondidus. There, Athena will not haunt my sleep now. Peace in Mt. Olympus. Did I leave anyone out?

I'm ready when you are, though it is going to take me some time to figure out who was on Sinbad's voyages. I'm still trying to catch up with you on the Greeks. You keep leaving yourself out. Modesty prevents you from taking on the role of Medea? By the way, have you read The Last Voyage Of Somebody The Sailor?

Wicked One, I like the new avatar. Very dashing.
I have not read this book you name. I take it that it's about Sinbad or someone like him - an archetype? I'll look for it next week.
A question: The post on your blogspot, why Achilles and not Hector? (Beautifully written, BTW.)
I leave myself out Because I am shy and modest. One would not know it by the way I carry on in cyberspace or in meatspace. Only those closest to me understand this.
As for Medea, I will say that I don't agree with what she did, but I understand the emotions that drove her. Those I feel, not because I've experienced her situations but because it's something I understand. It resonates. No other way to say it.
Why did you not insert yourself in your telling of Jason's Game? Shyness and modesty?

I would have to be someone who didn't sail on the Argos. Pelias, perhaps?
It is interesting that the reasonable and balanced character, Hector, is obscured by great Achilles. I'm interested in Thetis.
