WV voter reveals herself as latte liberal!

avatar

I plan to vote for Hillary in the West Virginia primary next
week even if she drops out of the race in the next 6 days. Before you gnash
your teeth or roll your eyes, read on.

I’ve lived in West Virginia for 17 years, spent the first
17 on the East Coast and 11 more on the culturally and racially diverse West Coast.
I am: caucasion (almost the same as Obama!), aged 45 (same as Obama!), married, mother of 2
kids, a homeowner (same, same, same), a successful small business owner, college
educated (same), and tech-adept. I believe in freedom FROM religion, have never owned a gun,
and drink wine (exclusively malbecs at the moment) and french roast coffee--though not at the same time.

On my playlist are the Drive
By Truckers, Wilco, Regina Spektor and Bruch. I have never had an abortion,
loathe right-wingers, can’t bowl for shit (same!), and wouldn’t vote for McCain
unless he was running against GW Bush.

I’m also a knitter, a blogger since
2002, and I’ve got 3 unpublished novels in my desk at home. My husband says one
of them’s pretty good!  (Yes, he's a tough critic.)

In high school, I went to an
inauguration party at the Mayflower Hotel in DC – when Jimmy Carter took
office! I’ve followed politics for years. I lived in the California bay area when
Diane Feinstein was a city councilwoman.

I voted for: Mondale, Dukakis, Clinton,
Clinton, Gore, Kerry. In the last presidential primary, I voted for Dean—even
though he was out of the race by the time of the WV primary. I voted for him because
of his opposition to the pack of lies that was the Iraq war rationale.

Obviously, Obama’s my kind of guy,
so why would I vote for Hillary? Does it matter? Do all Hillary voters have to
be deranged or downscale (read, uneducated)? If Obama is on the ticket, rest
assured I will vote for him in November.

Out of the many millions of votes cast
for Hillary, surely some are from people like me—no grudge against Obama, no
secret racist agenda. We just think Hillary Clinton would make a pretty good, effective
president.

I am posting this little entry in the hope of enlightening some of y'all who have never traveled to the interior of our nation.

Oh, I forgot to add that I am a coal-miner's granddaughter. My grandfather lost a leg in 1935 in a mine accident. He was a lifelong Republican, but man his wooden leg was cool.

Now spin me!

No spinning and no flames, but if she can no longer win the nomination and you are willing a happy to vote for Obama in November why not now?

Same reason I cast a wasted vote for Dean in '04. That's who I like.

Nothing but respect here; however, the only concrete reason I see you giving for voting in a primary ("opposition to the pack of lies that was the Iraq war rationale") would also seem to suggest Obama.

Nevertheless, I can respect the intangibles, and I'm glad to hear that you'll vote for Obama in November.

Please consider her foreign policy postions--Iran in particular. How can you forgive her recent comments and the Iranian reaction to them? Especially since Bolton and others are ramping up the rhetoric. If the administration acts against Iran, she'll have to explain why she added fuel to the fire. This is the biggest mistake she's made so far. Watch the Iranian reaction here:

Fair enough and I respect your primary vote and I look forward to your support of the Dem Nominee in the fall.

I think it's great that you support your candidate with passion and conviction. I support Obama and I have very good friends who support Clinton. We argue about our respective candidates but we also remain friends because we all agree on the fundamental goal--electing a Democratic President and gaining a solid majority in Congress this November in order to move our country away from the insanity of the last seven years.

You have my respect and gratitude for November, as you are a better person than I am. Since I could not claim the same had the situation been reversed.

Thanks for the civil replies. I was testing the waters (& promise to use notepad to compose my next post!)

West Virginians get cranky when we are all painted with the same brush. We're nothing like those ignorant hillbillies in Kentucky!

Seriously, the storyline that Clinton voters in Middle America are all conservative, old, and/or lower class whites is not particularly accurate. Neither is the converse (obverse?) story. My husband early voted for Obama yesterday (and he's quite old and white).

Yes, I do disagree with some of Clinton's positions (no gas tax holiday, please!), but I chalk it up to campaign rhetoric, which no candidate can avoid completely.

At any rate, I think Obama will do great. I'm planning on slapping an Obama bumper sticker right above the Hillary one.

Just vote for whomever you want. It really is OK.
