When Obama gets Angry

avatar

The opening paragraph from MSNBC's Analysis of how Obama will battle the GOP for the presidency:

How do you know if Barack Obama is unhappy with what you're saying— or
not saying? At meetings of his closest advisers, he likes to lean back,
put his feet on the table and close his eyes. If he doesn't like how
the conversation is going, he will lean forward, put his feet on the
floor and "adjust his socks, kind of start tugging at them," says
Michael Strautmanis, a counselor to the campaign. Obama wants people to
talk, but he doesn't want to intimidate them. "If you haven't said
anything, he'll call on you," says Strautmanis. "He's never said it,
but he usually thinks if somebody is very quiet it's because they
disagree with what everybody is saying … so Barack will call on you and
say, 'You've been awfully quiet'." There are no screamers on Team
Obama; one senior Obama aide says he's heard him yell only twice in four years. Obama was explicit from the beginning: there was to be "no
drama," he told his aides. "I don't want elbowing or finger-pointing.
We're going to rise or fall together." Obama wanted steady, calm,
focused leadership; he wanted to keep out the grandstanders and make
sure the quiet dissenters spoke up. A good formula for running a
campaign—or a presidency.
I certainly hope he's ready for what's coming.  It won't be pretty.  I've said this before and I'll say it again here.  I'm starry-eyed and naive with respect to the political process.  That said, I wish that one's character, quality and intellect were the prevailing forces in selecting a president and not the politics of mud-slinging, destruction, gotcha and sound-bite.  For all that she did, I am thankful for Hillary dragging it out this far.  She "vetted" him and prepared him for what's coming.  One has to think that his campaign is now structured in a way that it would not have been had Hillary not tried him.  The more I hear about Senator Obama, the more I believe that he is the right person for this moment in time.

Obama angry? Why, how can we all come together in this moment as a Country if there is anger involved. How will that ever help? Certainly, we don't want a "fighter" to lead us...We are much better off sitting down and discussing things with the people that disagree with us.

McCain's a fighter, for sure, but in a nutty way, really.

You didn't read the post.

Try again later.

Louisville, I suggest you read Realities of American Foreign Policy, by George F. Kennan. The key word is "Realities."

It is possible to base foreign policy on genuine national interests. It is possible to clearly state those interests to the world. It is possible to clearly state to the world what we will do if those interests are threatened.

The proper job of diplomacy is clear, polite communication, whether you're communicating a desire to be friends or a readiness to be a devastating enemy.

Poor communication is a prime cause of trouble. Obama is a good listener, a good talker, a good reader, and a good writer. He has those qualities because he is a good thinker.

Just ask Pakistan -- or did Obama really mean to elicit front page coverage there?

And if it was a brilliant policy move why did Obama first defend it by saying he was just saying what everybody was saying?

Bittergate was real clear too.

And, as we now know, "Containment" as a long term strategy was a huge failure. It split the world into 2 spheres that still basically exist to this day. That strategy has done untold harm to the world. We put so much money, resources, and human equity into that startegy that it for all intents has bankrupt two societies. This effort distracted attention from helping develop the Southern Hemisphere in a way that didn't destroy countries and people. It kept us from fulfilling the promises of the New Deal and giving people a safety net that actually allowed them to live through good times and bad. I submit that following the tenets of Mr.Kennan will lead us again into similar disasters.

Louisville, the White House and Pentagon modified Kennan's containment concept for their own political and bureaucratic purposes. Anyway, it was never meant to be a fixed long-term method.

Around 1957 Kennan rightly stated that the USSR was barely able to hang onto its existing empire and had no wish to grab more. So Kennan recommended a policy adjustment, but the big Washington machine had no interest in changing direction.

Containment as an idea was wrong. History has proved it no matter if kennan wanted to change his original thought or not. I would hope that we have learned enough from our own history not to walk down that path again.

And, yes, I know Bill Clinton employed a version of "Containment" on Iraq. That policy too wasn't a long term winning strategy and would have proved a failure as well. Again, I would hope we are done with those ideas. They do not work.

Louisville, your sarcastic remark "We are much better off sitting down and discussing things with the people that disagree with us" seems to imply that we are always right and people who disagree with us are always wrong. That is perfect bigotry.

Yeah Luoisville, your comment discredits you. If you read the post you would see it is an inappropriate response.

On top of that, Obama has never said he dosen't get angry, he has only stated that there is a certain way to deal with people who make you angry that is more effective.

I know it's not a simple idea for those who are saturated with too much tv and like to see people pointing, scowling and yelling when they get angry so they can follow the plot without having to pay enough attention to catch nuance but people really do have more layers then the sound bites we hear all day long.

Awesome reply. I have yet to see how getting angry has ever solved a problem. It may bring a problem to light, but until everyone calms the fuck down, nothing gets done.

I find it an asset to be the guy that is perfectly calm and rational while everyone else is running around in sissy, hand-waving fits.

Not exactly sure who remaining Trolls around here think they are converting or distracting. It's actually kind of comical now to see them freaking out behind the bars, indiscriminately flinging poo at anyone who passes by.

Ironic and pathetic. Quite a year to bring those two words together.

So yours is the only voice that counts? Nice elitist attitude. But, coming from your typical Obama supporter, would not expect anything less.

avatar

J, not so. I am not of the Reality TV generation. I was simply pointing out that Mr. Obama either is trying to pull the wool over your eyes or not being extremely naieve in his views. There has been no Democratic President that didn't follow this view that diplomacy trumps guns every time. It isn't new or novel. To trot it out as such is, dishonest intellectually. It actually smacks of GWB.

avatar

"There has been no Democratic President that didn't follow this view that diplomacy trumps guns every time."

No president ever said or suggested that. And I cannot think of even one example of a president applying that view. For what it's worth, JFK, in the Cuban missile crisis, used both diplomacy and guns. That crisis was resolved by JFK's willingness to remove our nukes from Turkey in exchange for the removal of the Soviet nukes from Cuba.

It makes sense to peacefully resolve differences. That's why diplomacy must precede military action in most circumstances.

Sure there is. Reagan, GWHB, GWB, just off the top of my head have gone for the gun before diplomacy.
