Update on Robo Calls in NC - Investigation Heats Up!
I'm sorry that this story has political ramifications, but I'm not going to hide from it because - it IS real, and this is one of the worst cases of illegal assaults cast upon our voters (and our election officials) in North Carolina probably since Jim Crowe days. Book mark Facing South's website to keep up with this quickly developing story. If this non profit had given voters accurate or good advice, and followed the law, we wouldn't be having this conversation today. Facing South has two updates today:
Center for Investigative Reporting follows Women's Voices' political connections
Facing South May 2, 2008
Will Evans with the Center for Investigative Reporting has compiled a helpful chart documenting in detail the connections between the principals of Women's Voices Women Vote -- the nonprofit we discovered behind illegal election robo-calls in North Carolina -- and the various presidential campaigns.
As we have already noted, many of the group's top leaders have worked for Bill and Hillary Clinton in some capacity. Founder and President Page Gardner, for example, served as the deputy political director for the 1992 Bill Clinton campaign and worked on his presidential transition team. Executive Director Joe Goode was a pollster for Bill Clinton, and former Women's Voices leadership team member and strategic planner Maggie Williams is now Hillary Clinton's campaign manager.
The Center breaks new ground by showing just how heavily and disproportionately Women's Voices principals have invested in the Hillary Clinton campaign. According to the chart, they have donated a total of $34,800 to Hillary Clinton or HillPAC since 2000. At the same time, they have donated only $3,600 to the Obama campaign and $2,300 to John Edwards.
click here and scroll to the bottom about questions raised by charity watchdogs over the fact that in 2006 Women's Voices paid $800,000 -- 16 percent of its budget -- for phone services to Integral Resources Inc., whose CEO and founder, Ron Rosenblith, is Gardner's husband. The organization also paid several million dollars more to companies run by five other members of the nonprofit's leadership team.
Daniel Borochoff, president of the American Institute of Philanthropy in Chicago, said that's a concern as it gives the appearance of a conflict of interest. Rick Cohen, former executive director of the National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy and a national correspondent for Nonprofit Quarterly magazine, added that such relationships create "the image, if not the reality, of self-dealing."]

Local voter advocacy groups were encouraging voters to take advantage of "same day registration" during North Carolina's early voting period. That makes WVWV's behavior even more troubling:
Facing South. May 02, 2008 Why did Women's Voices use disruptive voter registration approach in NC?
In response to our investigation of Women's Voices Women Vote and their illegal and deceptive voter outreach in North Carolina before the critical state primaries, some have defended their voter registration approach.
No one seems to be defending Women's Voices' use of anonymous, illegal robo-calls in North Carolina, or their decision to do those calls in North Carolina two and a half months after they had told a newspaper in Virginia that they vowed to stop the practice nation-wide.
This strategy -- which Women's Voices conceded could cause problems, in a letter they faxed to the N.C. State Board of Elections on Monday -- is all the more curious given that every organization Facing South spoke to that has been involved in voter registration in North Carolina has been using a much easier alternative: One-Stop Early Voting.
This voting reform, passed last year, allows North Carolina voters to register and vote all at once at over 200 One Stop voting centers across the state. Representatives from Democracy North Carolina, the NAACP, and the N.C Democratic Party all tell us they have been pushing almost exclusively for One-Stop Voting, because of its ability to capitalize on interest in elections created by the primaries, but also avoids the potential of discouraging and disenfranchising voters inherent in Women's Voices' approach.
For example, as Damon Circosta of the N.C. Center for Voter Education said to Facing South:
“Ever since the register-by-mail deadline passed, nearly every voter engagement group in the state has been pushing one-stop early voting, where you can register and vote at the same time without mailing anything in. To be pushing mail-in registration at this time is either a blunder of comedic proportions or a deliberate attempt to confuse.”

Now, we can find out who sent around the
bogus, doctored movie making it look like a Clinton
staffer was dissing voters.
Wouldn't be surprised if it was the same source.

From another story on this issue:
So, Ms. Gardner, if you knew ahead of time that this mailing had the potential to lead to confusion and aggravation, why didn't you wait a few days until after the primary to send it?

This is good news.
But I think they will not have any time left to investigate sample ballots in NC that have OBAMA's name on them, but not the word "sample".
Which makes them actually illegal.
May 3, 2008 7:38 AM | Reply | Permalink
Is that illegal? Earlier someone had posted some from Clinton like this under the faulty assumption that these were real ballots that had left off Obama's name (you can imagine their fury), and I pointed out that this was a typical sample ballot.
No where on this Clinton sample ballot was the word "sample" printed, however, which might've led to the confusion.
Do you have a link to the story covering these ballots?

Keep this going.
this needs to stay out in the public eye.
I'm sick of our democracy being fucked with and I wish they'd make vote tampering treason - this is a democracy.

WVWV didn't notify the North Carolina State Board of Elections.
They faxed a letter over to the NC SBOE this Monday after 5 PM after the story broke that WVWV was behind this Operation Chaos.

Will any reporter ask Hillary about this? I'm sure she would answer that she is not affiliated with it, but since she is affiliated with the people in charge, this could be a follow-up question.
I guess I know the answer to my own question. Unless of course George Stephanopoulos, who got her husband elected, and is now her chief "inquisitor" on ABC, decides to do it.

I'm amazed that this is getting so little (if any!) press. The NY Times continues its habit of talking up Wright by talking about how others are reacting to Wright and what is not being talked about as they talk about Wright. (How many freakin' articles do we need about the reaction of various churches to Monday's press conference!)
Is this because Americans love the symbolism associated with democracy more than the actual democratic process? Or is it that our democracy has been ruthlessly co-opted by the nationalism of the security state?

This is a political nuclear bomb. Keep it in the news cycle. If this attaches itself to the Clinton camp as it should then there will be legal ramifications and will seal her pine box over her thrashing corpse.

This is the kind of thing that will make it virtually impossible for many Obama supporters to vote for Clinton should she win the primary. Not just a few of us, but many of us. If the party allows this kind of tactic to prevail, they are really looking at a very serious defections to Nader, an Obama write-in or just a non-vote.
Ironically, this illegal action is aimed at depression of Black voters.
She won't need those robo-calls to depress the Black vote in a general. how many close states can she win without Black support?
This person will do anything to win or take down Obama.

Yes. This is one of the (many) reasons not to allow her to amass any more power.

I don't understand why this is not getting more coverage from the traditional media, though NPR had a good story about it yesterday, and why it is off the front page of this site.
The organization, WVWV, seems to be riddled with conflicts of interest, in that members of the "leadership team" like Maggie Williams received substantial contracts with the organization. For a non-profit, that is extremely problematic.

well, the best way to make sure an organization is "non-profit" is to pay exhorbitant insider sums and salaries...
Certainly assures "non-proofit" status.

Thanks for the update! Good news for democracy. Id like to know more about ballots too, and I can tell you if the ballot makers' board is all Obama (or other more realistic incriminating connection), HRC supporters would be yelling even louder. And I would join them. I dont understand why anyone, even HRC supporters, wouldnt want to investigate this further to ensure voters are protected, even if just to be sure there was no games. No one has the facts yet, but when errors happen, when evidence shows our rights at risk, we investigate- and should, whether its suppression from the left or torture from the right. Democracy first.

The fact that the MSM has effectively blacked this story out is NO coincidence & should be of the utmost concern to anyone on anyside of any political position. It is an assault on our Democracy that needs to be screamed about from rooftops...
NPR to their credit has picked this up but the People need to be made AWARE. This should be a call to stand & defend our Country from attacks coming from within our own borders.

As an Obama supporter, I believe recent events have hurt him. I'm prepared for an Indiana loss, and a close NC result. But I don't see these as changing the final outcome.

The MSM is a criminal enterprise, in my view. This election cycle has unmasked them as complicit in the battering our democracy has taken in the last 8 years.

You know, these WV people, men AND womone, are some of the most professional people in politics.
I don't know them all, but I know enough about some of them to suggest that anyone who buys into their "oh, we just screwed up" story is either naive or a partisan.
These are the kind of people who would fire someone for making that kind of mistake, no actually they would never HIRE someone who might make that kind of mistake.
If you think that bunch of bosses could ever make these "mistakes" or ever let it happen twice by mistake, you need to check them aout a bit more.
They would never tolerat that kind of failure in their staff, so the fact it is a repetitive mistake only convinces me it was not a mistake the first time, or the last time.
They also know the FEC is impotent right now.

I just went through WVWV's Form 990 IRS filing for 2006 (available online at www.guidestar.org -- must register, it's free for basic info). The only mention of "relationships" is Gardner and her husband, nothing else. The post from Facing South says: "The organization also paid several million dollars more to companies run by five other members of the nonprofit's leadership team." Doesn't mention who they are, and maybe those contracts weren't awarded in 2006, which is why they're not in the 990 filing. 2007 doesn't appear to be online yet.
According to the Guidestar report, the organization was founded in 2003. It was granted 501(c)(3) status in 2005. When you consider this and the people who founded it, and their alleged goal of registering voters who are "unmarried women," kinda makes you wonder if the whole purpose of the organization isn't to build a voter base for Hillary Clinton. Hmmmm?

Sorry to echo myself, but I hit Send before I wanted to.
Adding to the above, I was wondering if they had any evidence that they were making any progress with their stated goal. They made some statements in the guidestar filings, and apparently they are proveable, so that's why I said they might be trying to build a base of voters for Clinton. At the same time, perhaps they figured out ways to cut off support for the opponent.
This is all just speculation -- not accusations.

HA! Tena, they sure do. And that's why I'm so suspicious, which leads to the other things that bother me about this.
1. How could this group do things so badly, and possibly illegally, in so many states for so long if the people who are on the board of directors and serve as administrators are so smart? And we do assume they are smart considering who they are.
2. Are these upper-level smart people really running this thing?
3. If not, then who's running this group? Did these smart people delegate everyday operations to lower-level not-so-smart people? And if they did delegate, did they never check in on them?
4. How could this group get everything so wrong and make so many errors when they spend so much money on strategizing? Can't they follow the strategy their consultants give them for their money? (I'd sure like to see the strategy they were given.) In 2006, for example, according to their 990 filing, they paid $88,842 to Maggie Williams' firm for "strategic planning." That was in 2006, I'd think they'd have bigger strategy for 2007-8.
[At this point, one could say that if Maggie Williams gave them that kind of strategy, we might have a new insight into Clinton's campaign blunders. But I digress.]
5. The group spent $51,000 in legal fees in 2006. Why would such a small group need so much legal advice in one year? In fact, Podesta is a lawyer -- he's on the faculty of Georgetown U. Law. Maybe that's not so much money, I really don't know. Someone tell me.
That's just a few of the things that are still bugging me. The biggest one is how this all went on without these really smart people knowing about it, and why are they excusing it and/or making excuses for it?
Strange. Very strange. Something is very, very wrong here.

The NAACP has filed a formal complaint about apparent voter suppression. I blogged on this separately, but I guess I need to cross-post here.
http://southernstudies.org/facingsouth/
"The N.C. NAACP hand-delivered its complaint today to state Attorney General Roy Cooper and State Board of Elections Executive Director Gary Bartlett. It's also alerted the U.S. Department of Justice that it's collecting more information from its national network and is contemplating filing a formal complaint with that agency."
I was amazed at the fact even the North Carolina media were ignoring the story. This formal complaint -- and the possible followup one to the DoJ -- should ensure that it doesn't go down the memory hole.
It's been a week since this Facing South broke this story, and all anyone has heard from Women's Voices Women Vote and its fans is that the group has a solid reputation, and has done lots of really good work in the past.
No addressing of the specific problems with the misleading robocalls, just an admission that mistakes were made and everything is being rectified.
The N.C. NAACP rightly got fed up with this stonewalling.
WVWV had a week to come clean. Time's up.

I have to think that the NAACP filing a complaint will create some kind of news coverage in NC.
These kinds of tactics sure build up the Clinton negatives. They may get away with this for a few days, and perhaps it may suppress some of the Black vote. But this can't be ignored by responsible super-delegates. And one has to think that will pay a price in the over-all debate.
I had an e-mail from an Black activist in another southern state who is sure the long -term effect will be to further sully the Clinton reputation among Black voters.
