United Steelworkers Endorse Obama

Pittsburgh – The United Steelworkers today issued the following statement of endorsement of Senator Barack Obama for President:

"When the presidential primary contests began last year, our Union felt strongly that because of Senator John Edwards’s deep commitment to working people and because of our shared beliefs, he deserved our strong endorsement.  His belief that unfair trade policies must be changed, his commitment to pass the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA) to restore workers’ rights to freely choose workplace representation, and his proposal for universal health care were widely shared by our members.

"Today, by virtue of a unanimous vote of our International Executive Board, we find ourselves once again in agreement with Senator Edwards, this time with his decision last evening to endorse Senator Barack Obama.  And thus today, the United Steelworkers enthusiastically endorses Senator Barack Obama to be the next President of the United States.

No endorsement of Super Delegates today? This is odd, I would have thought that a few would have endorsed Senator Obama..

What is happening?

It appears that today has been set aside for those who had previously endorsed Edwards. Obama picked up an Edwards pledged delegate from New Hampshire late yesterday, now the United Steelworkers. I'm guessing we'll see a few more Edwards pledges come out later today.

Two more should be official today. From a Daily Kos entry today:

John Moylon and Lauren Bilton are the names of the Edwards pledged delegates who were on CNN and announced that they will be supporting Obama. Moylon was the one who said he had spoken to six others who will be endorsing Obama but didn't say who they were. by peraspera

What's happening? What's happening??

A little thing called "sweetie gate," my friend. The superdelegates are backing off to see if Obama can survive it.

Thanks for posting this link elsewhere, Bender, it could be a real game-changer!

Son of a Steelworker (also prez of his local), and our family of 6 was supported by my mom's salary as a secretary for the Steelworkers when the local union went on strike for a few years (Newport News Shipbuilding & Drydock it was called at the time). This news just makes me feel great!!
