The Doublethink on Obama
The power of holding two contradictory beliefs in one's mind simultaneously, and accepting both of them . . . . To tell deliberate lies while genuinely believing in them, to forget any fact that has become inconvenient, and then, when it becomes necessary again, to draw it back from oblivion for just so long as it is needed, to deny the existence of objective reality and all the while to take account of the reality which one denies — all this is indispensably necessary. Even in using the word doublethink it is necessary to exercise doublethink. For by using the word one admits that one is tampering with reality; by a fresh act of doublethink one erases this knowledge; and so on indefinitely, with the lie always one leap ahead of the truth.
- From 1984 by George Orwell
There have been many examples of doublethink in regards to criticisms of Obama, especially in this primary season.
- Obama is an extremist liberal or even a communist who praised Reagan and voted for Cheney's energy bill
- Obama is an extreme atheist anti-religion, an extreme Muslim terrorist AND a Christian demagogue (TRIPLEthink!)
- Obama doesn't have the experience with the political establishment of Washington politics and he's got too much experience with the political establishment of Chicago politics.
- Obama is a partisan black nationalist who hasn't done anything specifically for the black community and doesn't deserve their support.
There are so many I could go on forever. Doublethink is the weapon of choice against Obama by Republicans and the more partisan of Clinton supporters and will be in the future.

I'd kind of agree with the third item referring to Obama's experience, but he's a very intelligent man with some solid political skills and good advisers. He's BS'ed his way through a lot of stuff in the primaries, and that skill should be a big help. He's got problems from a small percentage of voters who won't vote for a black candidate under any circumstance, plus a much larger group who won't vote for Obama because they suspect his racial motivations and attitudes. It's going to be harder for him to BS his way through that one, because I believe he is very conflicted in that area, and because of the obvious harm already done by Wright and some of Obama's comments. Name calling, finger pointing and guilt slinging over race can intimidate elected officials and cause them to support black causes they might otherwise not have supported, but in the privacy of the voting booth there is no such pressure. Therefore once we're past the primaries the more Obama's candidacy becomes about race, the less it helps him. How he deals with the ongoing Wright controversy will be of extreme importance as the swift boaters heighten the attacks.
He's also very liberal, which I see as a plus, but as we know, lots see as a negative. He's got big problems with Reagan Democrats. His comments in San Francisco will continue to hurt him because they are seen as his real attitude. His lack of military experience won't help. McCain has some major liabilities, but that does not automatically mean defeat. If Obama doesn't pick Hillary for VP, I'm very worried.

lol!
Proofread your comment Otto, is this snark?
Your whole argument is an example of doublethink!

Not at all. The comment very much attempts a singular picture. You make yourself look like someone who doesn't understand what "doublethink" means, or that you just want to attack anything Otto F says without thought.

I've referred t it as PASSIVE AGGRESSIVE POLITICS--throw out things about Obama, real or imagined, designed to pull on people's doubts or fears--then offer solutions for the fear and doubt you just inspired so you look like the saviour!

How about, Obama is trigger-happy about going into Pakistan but too willing to talk to dictators? Or Obama is an apostate Muslim who is also favored by Hamas. Or Obama is not really black, unless he were arrested for dealing drugs, (as he put it). Or he chose Chicago in the 90s so he could further his long-range plan to become president, exploiting the obvious advantages of being black (or not really black).

People say being too liberal is a problem, but in 04 John Kerry won the presidency (humor me) while holding the title of "most liberal senator" that someone or another gave him. All liberals need to do is define what we stand for (though perhaps go easy on the abortion/gay marriage stuff?) and a large majority of americans will (according to several research polls I read once) come to their senses.
failing that, I would like a national discussion of values, because I feel like all the people who watch O'Reilly and such don't really have any solid reasons for what they vote for (outside of "moral" issues), they just kind of vote out of feelings. For example, I could never debate public policy with my stepmom - she just doesn't know anything except that gay marriage is bad and abortion is bad, and has said as much to me.
