The Clinton's Chickens Coming Home to Roost

Susan Milligan of the Boston Globe has an interesting article up on Boston.com today, "As Clinton chances wane, old slights come due", in which she examines the backlash against the Clintons from within the Democratic party itself. It appears that the continuing silence of a number of uncommitted superdelegates is due in part to the treatment they received by the Clintons in the past.

When Democratic superdelegate Jim Cooper, a Tennessee congressman, pondered the choice between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, his thoughts wandered back to 1993. That year, Clinton was trying to change the nation's health system, and Cooper, a moderate Democrat, had a bipartisan healthcare bill of his own that, unlike Clinton's proposal, did not require employers to provide health coverage. The president's wife, Cooper recalled, was determined to stop her fellow Democrat. "She set up a war room in the White House to defeat me," he said.

The article goes on to say that many superdelegates insist that they are being objective in their decisions to remain neutral, or to back Obama, but the list of superdelegates who ran afoul of the Clintons in the past, does shed light on the current situation where Hillary finds herself unable to drum up few new commitments from superdelegates:

But others point to a list of leading Democrats who have had run-ins with one or both of the Clintons and have either not endorsed her or have backed her opponent.

They include Senator Robert Casey Jr., a Pennsylvania Democrat whose father, Governor Robert Casey of Pennsylvania, was prevented from speaking at the 1992 Democratic National Convention after a dispute with Bill Clinton over abortion. The elder Casey said at the time that he was being punished for his antiabortion stance, but he also refused to endorse the Clinton-Gore ticket at the time.

Former vice president Al Gore, who sometimes sparred with the president's wife during the Clinton administration, has remained silent.

Senator John F. Kerry, the Massachusetts Democrat whom Hillary Clinton criticized after he made a botched joke about Bush that was perceived as an attack on US troops in Iraq, has endorsed Obama.

Senator Ben Nelson, a Nebraska Democrat who disagreed with Hillary Clinton on healthcare changes when he was Nebraska governor and her husband was in the White House, has endorsed Obama.

Representative Niki Tsongas, a Lowell Democrat whose late husband, former senator Paul Tsongas, endured negative attacks by Bill Clinton in the 1992 campaign, has not yet endorsed a candidate.

As they say, "Be careful who you step on on the way up..."

G. Terry Madonna - director of the Center for Politics and Public Affairs at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Pa. - said the Clintons have "worn out their welcome" among many superdelegates, in part because of old grievances ranging from personal squabbles to broader issues such as the impeachment fight.

All this enthusiasm for payback-politics seems out of place for idealistic Obama supporters who are supposed to be all about change and "a new kind of politics". And whenever I hear about chickens coming home to roost I am immediately reminded of Jeremiah Wright shouting those same words to adoring parishioners shouting AMEN!! But of course feel free to post anything that strikes your fancy.

I don't make the news, Otto, I just post it here to get people like you all lathered up.

Mission Accomplished.

..and don't forget, it was US Admiral Edward Peck, the former head of Reagan's terrorism task force, whom Rev. Wright was quoting.

"I don't make the news, Otto, I just post it here to get people like you all lathered up".

Quite the concession.

AMEN!

Look, if you want to keep being my puppet, you've got to stop posting anti-Clinton material. It's making the other puppets look bad. OK?

Damn, Ben, you caught me instigating again. Here I thought the battle was won and over, but those "other" people keep coming here and posting their "Hillary will win Oregon" rants, and I'm reminded that the best way to lose a battle, is to think that you've already won it and then to let your guard down. If the other side hasn't conceded yet, what's wrong with continuing to help them towards the light?

Post-mortems are ugly business. Those of you with weak stomachs are hereby excused from the Autopsy Room.

Oops, this isn't helping with my case to remain as your sock puppet, is it? Damn...

From now on, I want you to be a unity sock puppet. Maybe I'll have to pass you over to articleman or allsburg to see what they can do with you.

Furthermore, using the word "afoul" in an article ostensibly about "chickens coming home to roost" is just wrong.

I'm trying to play nice, really I am. So I post on John McCain and all of his corrupt lobbyist ties, or the big "US soldier shoots at Koran and writes "F**k Yeah" inside" story, but no one seems interested. Oh well...unity it is!

Often, when you write such stuff, it's so beautifully written that there's nothing else to add! (Except a recommendation, of course.)

I will only agree to continue to be your sock puppet if I can be a black, gold-toed sock like the old men in Miami wear with their Bermuda shorts and clam-diggers.

No deal. I don't have enough gold-toed black socks to spare. I'm afraid you'll have to be satisfied with white socks, but I'll give you a choice between ankle or knee, and with or without the red stitching at the toe.

How about a white tube sock with the big colored stripes around the calf? Gotta have that extra elastic support.

I concur.

Absolutely inappropriate.

This incident could cause tensions in the Penguin/Chicken alliance.

I would bet that most of the superdelegates who remain uncommitted have merely been hedging their bets (and perhaps even still are). No one likes to back a loser, especially when there's a big change in the Democratic establishment in the offing.

Clinton got a large number of early endorsements no doubt because of her position as the front runner for the nomination, but as soon as Obama became a credible threat the well dried up very quickly. After that, Obama slowly closed the gap as he extended his lead in pledged delegates, but essentially the uncommitteds began to wait and see what was going to happen.

So I don't believe the supers have been trying to stick it to Clinton by refraining from committing. Politicians are not a particularly brave bunch of people when it comes to sticking their necks out, so the most obvious answer to why they didn't commit is that they didn't want to back the wrong horse thus risking the animus of the winning candiate.

It's not surprising that the Dems have long been disparaged as spineless wimps by the GOP. I think that those who have been safely holding back on making some kind of committment are perfect examples of the old guard of the Democratic Party. It's time to clean house and toughen up.

avatar

It's time to clean house and toughen up.

It's time to reduce the size of the party? God, you're dumb.

And you're good looking. Now we're both liars.

No! Bad puppet! No stripes for you!

Auugh! I've been demoted to First Class Private sock puppet. I've lost my stripes!

You guys are certifiably funny...

Although reasonable people can disagree on what it entails, cleaning house should have the effect of increasing the size of the party, as removing the few bad apples will hopefully have the effect of preventing other apples from succumbing to the rot themselves.

This would, presumably, bring in more people to the party rather than less, as I would suspect that most voters are anti-bad-apple.

Which is what I was implying. Only indiex would see this as advocating the reduction of party size. Nonsense.

By the way, voting out the dead weight and replacing them with Dems who will stand up to the GOP doesn't reduce the size of the party, it strengthens it. But I guess what they say about Hillary's demographic consisting largely of the uneducated is true, you guys sure don't know your math, do you?

Well Ben, if nothing else, hopefully we have proved to "specialist" that Opus is not Ben Hocking. Either that, or you have some serious issues with schizophrenia, and I am nothing more than a symptom of multiple personality disorder (which would be a very disappointing thing for me to discover).

Mrs. Penguin just informed me that the cat is out of food, so I have to head out to the store now. The cat just said something about wanting chicken...

I suspect a lot of super delegates remember what happened to the party under the Clintons in the 1990s. We lost state houses, governorships, the US senate and house under Bill.

They used the DNC to chase the same big money donors under McAuliffe as the Republicans did impractically trying to shoehorn the fat cat agenda via triangulation into the progressive policies they promised us.

They left the Democratic party a shambles in 2001, an underfunded second rate operation that couldn't compete in many states, on the defensive against a Republican onslaught. Al Gore couldn't even use them for support in 2000.

And Bill Clinton was also probably for the crabgrass in our yards too, right?

Look...Barry already told you why the pubs ascended with Reagan and in the 90s. They had all the good ideas.

Didn't you get the memo?

Oh please. He never said they were "good" ideas. Please get the quote straight.

After this campaign, it's not surprising to learn that the Clintons didn't learn a basic lesson from Kindergarten: people treat in kind.

If the Clinton's have long memories and bear a grudge, they run the risk of being increasingly irrelevant... and they know this. After all, Hillary still has at least 4 more years in the Senate.

It should not be a surprise to anyone that Politics is all about the relationships that are formed along the way. You support me on this and I'll support you on that. This person has always been my good friend - I've always been able to count on you for your support and I appreciate that. Political power is based on how much of that you've accumulated. And if you earn enough enemies, you don't have as much power as you might think you have, because you can be undercut when you least expect it. That's politics.

astral,

This thing is over; you can stop doing the math and all that...

Obama has enough Supers committed (behind doors) and will roll them out as needed.

The only reason he is moving on to General Election campaigning is that he knows FOR SURE that he has won.

It is time to think November.

Tell that to the Clinton supporters who are pushing for the idea of a Hillary Write-in campaign in November. They arent giving up - just look at the pro-hillary blogs.

They are free to do as they wish.

Well, the boss sent out the "Be nice to Hillary's supporters" memo today, so I've posted that and will refrain from responding to the "Hillary can still win this" posts from now on.

Are you sure you'll be able to resist? I mean, because you know she can still win this, don't you?

I'm serviing up nothing but hugs and Kool-Aid now!

Did you see we made the Rec list? I'm guessing it's because of the witty Hocking v. Opus banter that pushed us over the top. You need to take this sock puppet show on the road!

Arggh! The soft bigotry of low expectations … or something like that. We need another Genghis post about how so many posts on the Rec list are crap just so this one will get pushed off. I suppose since this one is (currently) #9, we'll need a competing one from articleman. :)

I learned a long time ago not to include the "please recommend my post" line, as it's more of a curse than a blessing to have outdated info sit on the rec list for 24 hours. Oy...

But, I still think that all of this will be of interest in reflection. We will all be looking back and thinking about why Hillary didn't take the nomination. There are lots of factors playing into that, of course. And one interesting aspect of all of this IS how the Clintons' past political connections have helped and hurt them. Maybe we don't have enough perspective on that yet to treat this with the depth and insight that it deserves, but it's worth exploring.

avatar

Hey Opie, Actually your totally correct. Clintons (duo) have never done anything for the American people and thank god those chickens have come home to roost. In fact, you all should just keep going because she doesn't deserve to live. Go on. Keep it up.

avatar

Nobody said they haven't done anything. All anybody is saying is that they also blocked a lot of good things and shit on the faces of a lot of good people on the way. This is especially true of Hillary, who also happens to currently be the spouse with less good things to her name.

avatar

Bill Clinton was the best Republican president in recent history which explains why the right wing wants Hillary Clinton to win.
The pro-Hillary sites are extremely distasteful, filled with right wing smear tactics, scapegoating, and race baiting. I don’t want to believe that Hillary Clinton or any Democrat operates or condones those trashy hate sites, but after watching the Clintons run a campaign against a fellow Democrat and likely presidential nominee that is unprecedented in its depravity, I have to conclude the Clintons will do anything. Just like the Dems on the Hill, voters don't forget. It's not realistic to step all over people and then expect loyalty.

It's not realistic to step all over people and then expect loyalty.

Exactly, so maybe you want to take Obama's advice and stop stepping on almost half of your fellow democrats.

Good grief! Give the Clinton-bashing a rest folks.

Ah well.

So much for unity.

I agree, this has to stop.

avatar

is otto a full blooded american name? or is it german?

Since I apparently have so much frackin power through the mere typing of my opinions here that I can sway or offend all the Hillary supporters in the country - as well as the Repugs and media, whom I also scorn with heaps of as much wit and malice as I can muster, I guess I need to stop.

I wouldn't want to destroy the whole fucking country with my comments here on this board.

We all should be vewy vewy careful!

What does Hillary know about unity. She sees her dream slipping away. And the tall skinny kid did it. If we don't see her concede to Obama by 6/4, she only wants to be a spoiler. It isn't like she will ever convince the Redneck Vote.

avatar

What you seem to miss here, Otto, is that it is the delegates that are playing the politics, not Obama. The delegates are with holding their support because of what they feel are wrongs made against them in the past. Barack Obama has nothing to do with this, other than being the recipient of their support.

LOL. Number one recommended.

It's great to know the despite protestations to the contrary, TPM is about political plain dealing and not member-imposed advocacy.

LOL. I didn't think those chickens had it in them!
