Southern Indiana Turns Out for Obama - Great Video!

This will make you smile!

If you thought that Obama wasn't attracting great crowds in southern Indiana, think again. Here's a great video of his appearance in Bloomington, about an hour south of Indianapolis and home of Indiana University. Why can't CNN come up with footage like this? Note the older couple near the beginning who point out that Obama drew three times as many people than Hillary did at this venue.

Also, make sure to check out the great diary that accompanied this video clip:

Obama has roots in Indiana! In the video artist's diary, scroll down into the comments section to see a Flickr photo display showing Obama visiting the farm of his great-grandfathers. Turns out one of his ancestors was in the Indiana General Assembly:

Barack visited the former Indiana homestead of his mother’s family, the Dunhams, with his wife Michelle and daughters Malia and Sasha today.

The Kempton, Indiana, property was once owned by Barack’s second, third and fourth great-grandfathers and the house that currently sits on the land was built by Barack’s great uncle, William Riley Dunham, who was a Democratic member of the Indiana General Assembly.

Details of the Obama family history in Indiana:

Barack’s fourth great-grandfather, Jacob Dunham, moved to Kempton in the 1840s and is buried at the Kempton Cemetery.

Barack’s third great-grandfather, Jacob Mackey Dunham, was a farmer in Kempton and married his third great-grandmother there July 21, 1853.

Barack’s second great-grandfather, Jacob William Dunham, was born in Kempton February 7, 1863. Jacob William Dunham moved to Kansas, where Obama’s grandfather and mother were eventually born.

When Jacob William Dunham left Indiana, he sold the land to Barack’s great uncle, William Riley Dunham, who built the existing home in the late 1800s.

His ancestor is person No.24

Wow, did you see all those Pennsylvania and Ohio roots he could have exploited? heheheh

So, we have a new favorite son? Good, glad to have him. I was at that rally at Assembly Hall last wednesday hanging by a rafter, top section, farthest corner back, got there about an hour before the start. The facility holds around 14,000 to 15,000 and The Herald-Times of Bloomington gave attendance at close to 13,000. The balconies were closed off which is pretty standard for an event like this(having worked for building services and at this venue some years ago). Hillary Clinton speaking at the same facility the friday before drew between 3,500 and 4,000 according to the same newspaper. I also read that Bill Clinton was there some weeks ago and drew around 6,000 I think. But in fairness to Bill, just as he was about to speak it was announced on the radio that free tickets for a Dave Matthews/Obama rally were being given away at the box office at Assembly Hall. Gotta love political snark.
The things I liked about the rally-
Kept running into old friends I hadn't seen in years.
A local politician handing out fliers on one of the ramps asking if you were from Monroe County. They knew not all of these people were from Monroe/Bloomington.
My congressman, Baron Hill had just endorsed that day (9thCD Lee Hamilton's old district) and introduced Obama.
It was the day after Obama disassociated himself with Rev. Wright but he didn't miss a stride, only referencing in passing as part of the distraction from issues.
Obama acknowledging Hill's endorsement noted that Congressman Hill is a member of the State Basketball Hall of Fame and given Obama's dismal bowling abilities promised if elected to replace the White House bowling alley with a basketball court.
Someone in the floor crowd fainted or almost fainted and Obama stopped the show cold. He said "I think we've got someone in trouble down here. Someone feeling faint. I want some EMTs to come down here and take care of them." The person then must have revived and protested that they were alright. Obama said, "I don't care. You're more important, this other stuff can wait. You need some water? I've got some water". He reaches behind the podium and grabs a bottle of water and hands it to someone to give to them. The EMTs come in, but the person is alright by now.

The Christmas in July gas tax suspension is loudly booed.

Here is another good diary entry from Dkos with a lot of good photos and a good description of the event. http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/5/1/73145/05350/576/506901

Thanks for your account! Excellent.

What an outstanding write up!!
I enjoyed reading it and sent it on to all my fellow Obama supporters who may not have a chance to attend a rally.

I attended the one at the Target Center here in MN and it was awesome!

Thanks again for such wonderful documentation of the historically significant campaign that the MSM fails to cover...

Obama is a game changer and this is a movement.

Yes. We. Can.

Has anyone seen the Evan Bayh memo or was that just a hoax?

It was supposed to hit the press today, but I haven't seen anything yet.

I was at the Assembly Hall rally. Beautiful, magnificent, and inspiring. It reminded me of what this campaign is all about. So many great moments, but one was when he said "I taught the Constitution, I believe in the Constitution, and when I am president I will OBEY the Constitution." The crowd went wild, and I felt myself in love with the American dream all over again. What this country CAN be...what it's SUPPOSED to be. I have never heard, seen, or met a politician who manifests the vision of "America the Beautiful" the way Senator Obama does.

Super!

I cried again. Can we?

Apparently we can!

One word: wow.

Bow wow!

*sigh* That was wonderful!

Obama has drunk Clinton's milkshake dry. He drank it up. She has nothing left but her straw, glass, and the loud bubbly noise that recalls the sweet, creamy, chocolaty goodness that once was.
