Repost: of "a call-to-arms for Michelle" A contribution to women's perspectives
This is a repost of P. Marshall's post of "A call-to-arms for Michelle". This original thread offered to provide meaningful discussion of the office of the First Lady in having a more defining role in the new administration. It was an opening that in it's irony was sidetracked by the very things that are presented as issues that will be faced. Respectfully, here is the body of the post from P. Marshall:
This is a call to arms for
all Democrats but particularly for all women. More importantly it is a special
appeal to those who have strongly supported Hillary and still do. I want to
speak to you first.
The odds
are now overwhelmingly against Hillary gaining the nomination. When her race
has ended many of you have said you will not support Obama. I would like you to reconsider not
because this country desperately needs to elect a Democratic president but
because there exists another incredible woman pioneer who needs your support
and passion: Michelle Obama.
Now I
need everyone to jump over and read a post by Kathy G at
http://thegspot.typepad.com/blog/2008/05/by-kathy-g.html#more
called The Hillary-ization of Michelle Obama.
Here is the important excerpt:
- I predict that wingnut heads will explode throughout the land [when she becomes First Lady]. And there will be a whole other layer of bullshit Michelle will have to deal with. In addition to the anti-Democrat bullshit, and the sexist bullshit, there will be, of course, the racist bullshit.
My heart goes out to her. The road she will be traveling on will be a difficult one, in particular because there is no one in the history of America who has trod that particular path before. She is an exceedingly courageous person to have chosen such a public role. Just by sheer virtue of being black and female, and daring to live a public life, she will be highly controversial. She will attract a hell of a lot of ugly hatred. Even for a person as strong as I am sure she is, there are sure to be times when that will be very, very hard to take.
What I'm wondering right now is, what can we - as Democrats, as feminists, as people who are deeply committed to racial equality -- do to help and support her? Here's the thing: we have, to an extent, the benefit of hindsight here. We know what the right did to Hillary, and we can expect them to do a lot of the same things to Michelle. How do we combat this?
I realize the Republicans and the right are going to do the same disgusting things they always do. But one thing we need to be hyper-vigilant about is not letting the media get away with repeating right-wing memes and narratives about Michelle (or Barack, or any Democrat, for that matter). Close scrutiny of the media coverage of Michelle Obama, as well as some energetic media-centered activism, will of course be crucial. Do readers of this blog have any more specific ideas? I'd love to hear your thoughts
So to Kathy G’s call-to-arms I add my own to TPM readers.
Yes, Michelle will not be the first woman president but she will be an historic First Lady and I think she needs an army of woman who will remain vigilant on her behalf at all times not only when she is in the White House but equally important all through the general election. When the right-wing attacks we as Democratic women need to protest immediately and not let them define her. It would be amazing if we were to see all the passion Hillary's followers have given their candidate be at the appropriate time in the near future shifted to Michelle. Yes she represents a newer generation; Michelle was not in the first wave of fighters like Hillary but she has had to fight every step of the way none the less so all of us including those in "Hillary's demographics" should take up her fight now. We need to take up Kathy G’s call-to-arms and swarm ever time the MSM, or a pundit, or the ring-wing puts out something nasty. We need to flood the networks with calls, the newspapers with letters, the pundits with emails. Stop whatever it is in its tracks. We can do this.(Yes we can!) It will not be marching in the streets but in a very real sense it will be taking to the streets to insure the rights of all women. We may not have a woman president this time around but we can insure the continued extension of women’s rights and of all aspects of social justice by electing Barack Obama and seeing his amazing wife redefine the role of First Lady. (The exploding heads will be an extra and very exciting treat!)
Please recommend again to put this version back into discussion.

It's quite humorous that Hillary was Hillary-ized yet everyone says she deserved it. ("Why didn't she leave her husband, a serial sexual predator, after all those years?"). And now Michelle is going to co-opt the "Hillary-ization" tag? Blather.
Oh yeah, "we know what the right did to Hillary"? Well do you know what the so-called "left" or progressives did to Hillary? Go take a look at the for a trip down memory lane. It wasn't just the people at Fox along for the ride. No one cheered louder than Andrew Sullivan, Adriana Huffington, and occasionally the man, Kos himself. But it's never too early to start rewriting campaign history. History is full of revisionism.

Michelle Obama isn't the same as Clinton.
Among Michelle Obama's possessions is a full-length
white mink coat.
She enjoys her luxuries. Her personal trainer. Things the rest of us can't afford.
When Obama became Senator, and got her employer, a
hospital, a grant, Michelle's salary tripled to the $300,000
range.
When Bill got into office, Hillary made it her mission
to help overhaul America's healthcare.
This was unprecedented for first lady. The Republicans
thanked her with a huge smear campaign - Whitewater.
They won't go after Michelle because Michelle will keep her
mindset on luxuries and status symbols.
So she really doesn't need my help.

FWIW, I am quite certain that the vitriolic bashing of Hillary as first lady scandalized most of those who now do not support her as a candidate.

Sorry Quasar, As I said on the other post. Its clear from here and from the reactions of the Obama camp there is not room in that particular tent for us or that we are even invited. So, no, I don't think that is our fight.

Louisville
of course there is room ...
This is not only about protecting one of our own -- a femme -- this is about electing a democratic president and saving our Republic, too.
It is about Supreme Court Justices whose ruling favour corporate enterprise over the individuals, expanded police powers and a host of others that are harmful to all individuals. For instance worker's rights -- equal pay (for women) was rejected.
McCain has promised to elect strict Constitutionalist Judges. Several of the SCOTUS justices are in their late seventies to mid-eighties. Just one more judge on the SC could make a huge difference regarding: presidential unitary power, civil and human rights, women's rights, and host of other important issues and rights that very well could be lost if McCain (shudder) god forbid wins.
We will not recognize America if McCain, god forbid, wins.
McCain will be just like a 3rd Bush term, only on steroids.
In the long run what we stand to lose with McCain is by far much more important than which candidate is nominated.
For the good of the country I hope you will reconsider. This is about something much larger than ourselves.

Well, it would have been nice to have your vote and your support. Then help to make things a little better for everyone.
Sorry we won't get your vote. We'll miss your input on issues.
Take care.
Goodbye.

So, then you are saying the tent is not inclusive then?

oh brother, how ridiculous. Michelle has led about as codled an existence as is humanly possible in this life. As a beneficiary of affirmative action, she gets a free ride to Princeton and HLS. As un undergraduate, she writes her thesis on the predictable and academically worthless topic, "Princeton Educated Blacks," as opposed to something substantive or that would require her to reach far beyond her own bubble existence. And doubtlessly at Princeton and HLS she was doted upon for being "special," i.e. a black person who can write and speak passable English. She gets a legal education at Harvard, in order to become the Director of External Affairs for a hospital, essentially a flack-PR job. And despite being showered with expensive education, which she has put to negligible use, she thinks the US (of the KKK of A!) has been insufficiently generous to her.
well, screw Michelle.
on another topic, screw Tibet too. Tibet is a sovereign Chinese affair, and no business of busybodies like you fools.

Am I wrong to think you're paid by the comment?

Chino, I deeply doubt that anyone is paying the troll formerly known as Milla for its incoherent posts. Let's not feed it. It'll soon be banned, and back under another similar name.

I'm sure you're right.
What a freak show it's been lately.

Quasar, I think you have a point, but this thread, like your earlier one, seems to be an anti-Obama comment magnet. Why do you think that is? (I'm asking that question sincerely.)
May 12, 2008 3:18 PM | Reply | Permalink
It might have something to do with the subject, Michelle herself.

Actually, I was asking the original poster that question. Your views on Michelle Obama are already abundantly clear; we'll have to agree to disagree.
It's a discussion board, of course: you're free to respond to whatever. But you're Exhibit 1 of the problem I asked Quasar about.
