Obama to Claim Nomination Victory by Returning to Iowa on Tuesday

From Politico.com:

Mike Allen reports
:

The schedule still says 'TBA.' But barring a last-minute change, Sen. Obama plans to be in IOWA on Tuesday night when he clinches a majority of available pledged delegates. This is a red state he's hoping to turn blue, so the intended message is that he's getting to work on the general – NOT taking a victory lap. Political Geographer Jonathan Martin says the Hawkeye State appears to be Obama's BEST chance to flip a state that went for President Bush last time. In 2004, Iowa went Bush 50, Kerry 49. In 2000, it went Gore 49, Bush 48, Nader 2.

Iowa does feel like a long time ago.

Correction, my title should have read, "Obama To Claim Victory by Not Claiming Victory on Return to Iowa Where He Claimed His First Victory."

My apologies for any confusion this may have caused.

He's going to have to claim victory sooner or later. He should probably wait until he reaches the magic number, but heck. This has dragged on for months.

I hope he carries Oregon or claiming victory on the night of two losses could look silly.

Rove slams Obama over 'bitter' comments, flag pin
Posted: 11:19 AM ET

(CNN) — Karl Rove launched a wide-ranging attack on Barack Obama during a speech at the National Rifle Association Convention Friday, blasting him for his recent comments calling some small town American's "bitter," and suggesting the Illinois senator is an effete politician unable to connect with a broad swath of Americans.

The comments, received enthusiastically by the large crowd in Louisville, Kentucky, are a likely sign Obama's words at a San Francisco fundraiser last month may be a major Republican talking-point should he capture the Democratic Party's nomination.

“You know in the age of Barack Obama I don’t know exactly what to call you, because after all, as he said, because we’re bitter and economically anxious, we ‘cling to our guns and we cling to our faith," Rove told the crowd to laughter and cheers.

"You probably didn't know you hunted out of economic anxiety, and if gas was a $1.50 a gallon, you probably wouldn't be hunting," he continued. “You probably thought you hunted because you enjoyed the outdoors and companionship with family and friends.”

Rove, largely credited with orchestrating campaign strategies that painted former Democratic nominees Al Gore and John Kerry as out of touch with small town Americans, also cited Obama's recent primary losses in Pennsylvania and West Virginia as evidence a large demographic is unwilling to vote for the presumptive Democratic nominee.

"We here have news for Barack Obama," Rove said. "The values of those people you diminished are the values of America. And those people don't like getting patronized, or viewed as an alien species, by a fellow who pretends to embody a new kind of politics, and especially by someone who wants to be president not of red states or blue states, but the United States."

Rove, who does not have an official role within John McCain's presidential campaign or at the Republican National Committee, also took Obama to task for recently wearing a flag pin.

No one cares what your Troll-Master Rove has to say.

I'll second that. Although there are still many who've not yet noticed, Rove and his ilk are are being consigned to the dustbin of history with speed.

Hope it's a dustbin with bars and orange suits.

I'm hoping it's a dustbin with a 6'4" 350lb predator that likes men who look like the Pillsbury Doughboy.

Karl Rove slams Obama! OHHHHHHH NOOOOOOOO!!!!!
RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!!!!!!

American Hunters and Shooters Association statement endorsing Obama:

AHSA Endorses Obama
Obama: He "gets it"

Today, as President of the American Hunters and Shooters Association (AHSA), I announced our endorsement of Senator Barack Obama for the Democratic nomination for President of the United States. Because the gun issue has recently become a factor in the Democratic primary in Pennsylvania, I want to share the remarks I made today:

As a gun rights organization we have not come to this decision lightly. We were formed two years ago because our research shows that millions of gun owners wanted a change. They not only wanted an organization that would protect their gun rights but an organization that was also committed to the protection of their communities as well as the protection of our lands. We reached out to the Obama campaign several weeks ago to offer our support and approval as was reported by Paul Bedard of US News and World Report. We believe recent attacks on Senator Obama's stand on the 2nd Amendment and his commitment to our hunting and shooting heritage are unfair and American Hunters and Shooters Association is stepping up to set the record straight.

Senator Obama has clearly demonstrated his commitment to the 2nd Amendment by his vote in support of the Vitter amendment to HR 5441, the Department of Homeland Security Appropriations bill of 2007. This amendment prevents the Government from confiscating guns in a time of crisis or emergency. Imagine how the citizens felt during Hurricane Katrina when government agents kicked in doors to confiscate law abiding citizens' guns at a time when they needed them the most. We know Senator Obama "gets it." To say that he is an elitist is patently ridiculous. To hunters and shooters everywhere, Senator Obama's vote demonstrated a fundamental understanding of the meaning of the 2nd Amendment which means he recognizes the individual right of all citizens to keep and bear arms. Senator Clinton, on the hand, failed to grasp the importance of this critical issue to hunters and shooters and voted against this Amendment. She turned her back on America's gun owners. In addition, Senator Obama's commitment to conservation and protection of our natural resources and access to public lands demonstrates to us his commitment to America's hunting and shooting heritage. Senator Obama will be a strong and authentic voice for America's hunters and shooters and it is with great pleasure that we endorse his candidacy.

Opus, thank you so much for the details. I'm so glad the hunters "get it". Having Cheney shoot the face off of a friend in a walled off luxury hunting spa didn't hurt either. These sportman know the BS when they see it - maybe sometimes they aim at it.

Are you a singer or and actress? You picture looks like a head shot.

Hey Rove is McCain still not fit to be President because he could have mental illness from his years as a POW?

Has Congress issued the arrest warrant for Rove yet?

Jonze - do we have video of that?

Unfortunately not. Rove is too smart for that.

Flying down to South Carolina after the upset defeat of Bush in the New Hampshire primary, Rove and Bush were said by a reliable source to have had a frank conversation about what was necessary to defeat Sen. John McCain, who had just defeated Bush in New Hampshire. A summit meeting was convened in Columbia and Rove delivered the message to the campaign operatives.

The candidate also tipped his hand to the strategy when he was overheard on a boom mike explaining his plans to Mike Fairs, a state senator. Fairs complained that Bush had not yet hit McCain's soft spots. "I'm going to," Bush said. "But I'm not going to do it on TV."

Because that's not the Rove way. Before the votes were cast, McCain was accused by Rove-managed surrogate groups of fathering a mixed-race child out of wedlock, being married to a drug addict, not being an attentive husband, using his wife's family fortune to buy his U.S. Senate seat and, worst of all, turning his back on Vietnam veterans; and all of this happened while George W. Bush was at rallies urging his primary opponent to please engage in a civilized debate on the issues.

Most of the accusations against McCain were contained in a World Magazine article, a weekly publication for Christian evangelicals. The magazine was edited by professor Marvin Olasky, an ideologue at the University of Texas -- a Communist Party member turned Republican, a Jew turned born-again Christian -- who had been recruited by Rove to refine his concept of "compassionate conservatism."

The vets' group denouncing McCain on behalf of Bush and Rove, the National Vietnam and Gulf War Veterans Coalition, was fronted by J. Thomas Burch Jr. Many of its members were driven by an obsession that there were still live Americans missing in action in Vietnam and McCain was failing to bring them home. McCain had considered that question resolved and had done his part as an elected representative and former prisoner of war to heal the war's losses. This was apparently the improper approach according to Burch, whose group was accused by McCain's camp of spreading rumors emanating from Karl Rove about the senator's mental stability after years in solitary confinement in a North Vietnamese prison.

When Wayne Slater, a reporter for the Dallas Morning News, wrote that the whisper campaign in South Carolina about McCain's mental health fit with previous Rove tactics in Texas, such as the whispers about Ann Richards' sexuality, Rove confronted the reporter on an icy tarmac in New Hampshire. "You're trying to ruin me," Rove hissed. "My reputation. You son of a bitch. It's my reputation." Bush, for his part, was less defensive. Not only did he refuse to denounce the fringe veterans' organization, he embraced its endorsement and dismissed McCain's complaints. On stage before the primary debate in Columbia, an enraged McCain confronted Bush. "You ought to be ashamed, George," McCain said.

"Senator, it's just politics," Bush answered.

"Everything's not politics, George."

While we're on the topics of McCain and guns:

McCain on Background Checks at Gun Shows
“He was for it, before he was against it”

AN OPEN LETTER TO NRA MEMBERS
When Senator John McCain addresses NRA leaders at their convention today, we all need to ask where does he really stand on the important issue of background checks on all gun transfers at gun shows.

In March of 2004, on the floor of the US Senate, Senator McCain delivered an impassioned plea for legislation to close the so-called “gun show loophole”.

SENATOR MCCAIN: “Why do we need this amendment? Some might point to tragedies such as Columbine, but as horrific as the massacre at Columbine was, where eleven young people needlessly lost their lives, that is not what drives the need to close the gun-show loophole. We need this amendment because criminals and terrorists have exploited and are exploiting this very obvious loophole in our gun safety laws...”

“We need this amendment because, according to the NRA [National Rifle Association], ‘hundreds of thousands’ of unlicensed firearms sales occur at gun shows each year. We need this amendment because ATF has identified gun shows as the second leading source of firearms recovered from illegal gun trafficking investigations...

We also need this amendment because my law-abiding constituents who attend gun shows in Arizona should not have to rub shoulders with the scum of the Earth who use this loophole to evade background checks to buy firearms to peddle to God knows who.”

And how could we all forget those movie theater ads featuring John McCain pleading to “close the gun show loophole”.

Now, McCain argues that no new gun laws are needed.

Has he changed his mind or has he had a “senior moment” and forgotten that he once was an outspoken national leader on this issue?

Hunters and shooters deserve to know where the leader of the “Straight Talk Express” now stands on gun shows.

So today, while Senator McCain panders to Wayne LaPierre and Chris Cox, Kentucky sportsmen need to call McCain’s Senate office at 202-224-2235 and ask where the Senator really stands on this important issue.

Americans hunting other Americans at city ATMs and convenience stores late at night need their unlicensed guns to put food (and/or drugs) on the table, don't you know. The criminal fascist Karl Rove understands these "law abiding" Americans and will not stand idly by while "effete liberals" rob them of their Second Amendment Rights to take up their guns to serve in a "well-regulated militia" now on its fourth extended, stop-lossed tour in Afghanistan or Iraq.

As well, these paranoid "patriots" (when not serving in the Foreign Legion) need their untraceable guns to "defend" their communities from a lawless federal government that spies on Americans without warrrant, abducts Americans without probable cause, and "disappears" Americans into a vast, secret Gulag without published accusation or access to counsel -- in short, the very lawless predatory Republican federal government that Karl Rove helped Sheriff Dick Cheney and Deputy Dubya Bush impose upon law abiding "liberal" Americans who don't threaten other Americans with the guns they don't need, or want, to have.

Oh, who gives a flying fuck at a rolling doughnut what the criminal fascist Karl Rove has to say about anything? He'll soon find Jeebus in a jail cell in any event.

Since when is Iowa a "red state"? Trust me, I know we voted for Bush in 2004, but Iowa is in no way a red state. Purple and, I would argue, blue-leaning. More registered Democrats than Republicans and even solid-red (according to NYT) congressment Jim Leach lost in 2006. Maybe it's okay to categorize a state based on the last election, but it is humiliating to be lumped in with the right.
