"Obama is a Phony."

This statement has been thrown around a lot in the comments sections of reader posts recently.  It's an opinion I disagree with, but it's also one I would honestly like to understand better.

I don't believe Barack Obama is the second coming of Jesus, Gandhi or even John Lennon.  But none of those guys ever ran for political office.  And let's face it, it's a hell of a lot easier to be 100% true to your principles when you don't need to raise hundreds of millions dollars to finance a campaign and devise a strategy that will not only win you a majority of votes from a fickle and largely uninformed public, but a majority that will deliver you the appropriate number of delegates from a screwy, often illogical electoral map.

In other words, I believe Barack Obama, like every politician in every age of history before him, lies.  (Stay with me, fellow Obama backers.  I'm not trying to harsh on our hope buzz.)

By "lies", I mean tell people what they want to hear, couch views a certain way depending on the audience, compromise principles for practical purposes and make promises to people because you need favors from them. Obama and every other candidate does these things and they do them because they are part of the job for any politician.

Voters don't like to admit their chosen candidate ever stretches the truth, makes deals with corporate jerkwads or panders to those dreaded special interests.  But we all know it happens.  We mostly turn a blind eye or, if we happen to be the ones pandered to, lap it up.  Or maybe, if we're intelligent folks who frequent TPM, we engage in some rhetorical ju-jitsu in an effort to prove our chosen candidate, does it way less than the other guy and is therefore a better candidate.  Which brings me back to my interest in the comment: "Barack Obama is a phony."

Given that all politicians are, by necessity if not nature, disingenuous to some degree and that, in general, a less disingenuous politician should be held in higher regard than more disingenuous politician, I personally find Obama far less "phony" than the most other politicians.  I base that opinion on what I have read and heard from him in relation to his record and the opinions of people who I trust, a few of whom actually worked with him (on an after school program in Chicago).  But clearly there are a decent number of people out there-- Democrats and independents-- who completely disagree with me and find Obama as phony as I find him genuine.   I'm having a hard time understanding why, not because I'm so anti-Hillary or blindly-Barack, but because the only evidence I've ever seen given to back up this "Obama is a phony" statement is either a critique of the people who support Obama (cult like, suckers, blind, etc.) or another equivalent judgement ("he's a snake oil salesman, a con man, etc.).

So my question is: what specifically do those of you out there who routinely make this comment believe makes Obama such a phony?  I would genuinely be interested to know and I think some other Obama supporters would too.

(NOTE: I don't want this to become either an Obama bashfest or Clinton-backer ambush, so I would urge anyone who comments to try and be civil to one another, regardless of how frustrating you may personally find another comment.  Assuming anyone wants to comment.  Thanks.)

I love your avatar

Thanks. I was a picture of my dog up until yesterday but I saw this on a graphics site and was smitten.

I, Hillary Clinton, your future president, hereby gratefully accept the endorsements of historical figures like John Lennon, Ghandi and Jesus*.

Leading the Historical figure vote!
Leading you all!

Much Love,
Hillary.

*Endorsements made for Hillary Clinton by listed personae is simply a statement of historical fact, as originally attributable to the Obama campaign, and as such has no bearing whatsoever on RFK nor his assassination by Bosnian sniper fire.

There weren't saying Obama is a "phoney".

They were saying "Obama is a homie".

is there somebody here that can help me

I am trying to get an urgent message to the Jewish Communities. Something that the media here is not picking up

I have a letter in a trinity church bulletin that goes back to 2007

Its an open letter to Ophah from Ali Badhdadi

Obama is anti semitic and anti american

The government wants to get the news out only after Hillary quits. The DNC is covering up for Obama

I also have a video of obama in a sexually improper act towards a CNN female press member on his plane. She was not happy about this either.

pretender13@comcast.net

I want the truth out there ASAP

Thanks

go to

www.larrysinclair0926.wordpress.com

he has a hearing set up with Judge Kennedy in the United States court in Wash DC

tomorrow it will be on the news. Obama is directly involved in the murder of his gay friend Donald Young in Chicago.

please help me find a place where I can contact the Jewish gov office or anywhere that will take my files. This is serious and I am afraid if they give Obama all the super delagates before the Jewish community votes. There will be nothing we can do about this

Thanks

I have one Jewish Community leader you can contact:

look for the reply of "Yutzi Meshugeneh" for the password.

I can't help but think that this is a veiled post inviting people to just bash Obama. I am a Hillary supporter who actually has some respect for Obama, but it is a tempting question. So I will just put my blinders on and assume that Martin X is being sincere when he says that, "I would genuinely be interested to know and I think some other Obama supporters would too.", about why I think Obama is at times disingenuous. Two quick examples.

Obama has a habit of taking strong positions that sound great to the ears of a progressive anti-Bush voter. But he also has a habit of backing off of these positions without tossing the "winning" Democratic primary slogan. For example, Obama's position on talking to our enemies, in my opinion, is ultimately no different than Hillary's position. But he continues to win cheers by saying that his position is somehow different. I find it inconsistent and annoying.

One of the things that makes Obama an attractive candidate is his biography. His campaign has skillfully crafted his over arching message about change, transcendence, and one America by equating those values with Obama's biography. I, as a minority can easily be seduced by the "outsider" aspect of his candidacy. Obama's biography has been effective in making his candidacy "heroic." But if he is to continue the "heroic" narrative, I hope that he can keep his biography accurate, lest he be accused of creating an exaggerated mythology about who he is. His latest gaffe or inaccuracy is chronicled here in WAPO.

If or when Obama wins the nomination, I will support him without the benefit of wearing a rosy pair of sun glasses.

Thanks for the comment, Airwon. I can assure I am not soliciting Obama-bashing. (Read any other post or comment I've made and I think it'll be pretty obvious I'm an Obama backer.) And I'm not asking for people, especially Obama supporters, to say what they do and don't like about the candidate. I specifically want to hear on what basis people are deciding that they believe Obama as a phony.

I'm still an Obama supporter (maybe because I'm so turned off by Hillary's antics) but I confess that I was hugely turned off by him after Philadelphia. The first rally he was at after the primary he was taking digs at Hillary in a way that was bitchy and in total contrast to the message he had been purporting to be giving. ie He was still setting himself up in other settings as the one who didn't attack the other Democrat; saying he was trying to change the nature of the campaign. Then there he was running her down at a rally, and my reaction was `is this man a passive aggressive?
He won't stand up there to her face and sock it to her but then he goes behind her back to other people and ridicules her'.
The whole thing struck me as hugely phoney and for the first time I found myself actually not respecting him. Then of course Hillary started doing more Hillaries... I dismissed my newfound questions about Obama because having thought it through I realised what he was really up against having to deal with her dreadful Republican style campaign when he himself believes it inappropriate to launch attacks that could be used against her in the general if she won the nomination; crucially, not being able to be the black man beating up on a white woman.

LOL Larry Sinclair has been outed as a liar so many times it's become almost laughable. Truthseeker I suggest you seek the truth rather buying into BS.

A little google search should help you out.

I think we can pretty much ignore anyone with the handle "truthseeker" around these parts. There are a few of them.

Interesting

Interesting

that when I post links to articles from non-wingnut publications that discuss some of Obama's shortcomings, nothing shows up here.

Tried yet a third time - it was not the charm promised by the old adage.

There's some sort of anti-comment spam protection stuff working here. If you post too many links, or too many links per unit text (how many is unkonwn), your comment will be "held for approval" (and that approval seemingly never comes).

It doesn't have anything to do with the URL - I've had posts "held" due to too many links to TPM...

I agree it's aggravating, but it's not a conspiracy.

HTH!

I agree it's aggravating, but it's not a conspiracy.

Of course, that's just what They would say.

For that matter, how do I know you're not Badge Man?
