Obama draws crowd of 75,000 in Oregon
Today Obama drew a crowd estimated to be 75,000. I watched his speech on CNN and they showed him standing in front of the river but they never pulled back to show the crowd or given any indication of how big it was. I wonder why? Would it seem to much of a contrast to the modest crowd Hillary drew?

Video of the far reaching, never ending stream of people. Dear O'Dear, what a sight? Portland, tip of an hat. Obama, take a bow.
I imagine shivers down the spine and I'm not talking about his supporters.
Well Done. And who will OR again?

Apparently the world as we know it has begun to recognize that Obama's a whole new game...
Throw out the old models, let the scales drop from your eyes, open your hearts to the truth,
...because the real campaign has just begun.

A little irony
Slick Willie was 2 miles from there in Oregon
and drew a crowd of 250
Most were bill collectors I presume

This is the type of total bullshit media attacks that HRC has been talking about the whole election. So what if Obama draws 75,000 she was reaching out to the only important metric and there where at least 30 people at the last donut shop she visited. This is just another example of biased anti-hillary coverage that has ruined her entitlement.

i don't know. Look at the head near the big tree. I think you will have a hard time proving that it isn't HRC. If thats the case, she is a brick in her own wall. If you see video of her with a matching crowd of 75000, look for obama t-shirts.

You're welcome. Portland certainly had him mark down on the calender for this sunday by the look of it.
Beautiful water front to spend your weekend afternoon as well.

The waterfront looks too cool. At the risk of sounding stupid, how many folks live around Portland and does it face the Pacific. I love to sail and am from the New Orleans and Houston area, Galveston, Lake Pochantarain and the Gulf of Mexico are diffrent animals. I am always so taken aback by the San Jaun Islands, I am thinking about trying to retire up there, the sailing looks so awesome, only part of the year!

Portland is on the Columbia River, an hour or so up steam from the Pacific coast. Look for Astoria for a great Oregon town on the Pacific coast.

Anyone else notice how the MSM did everything they could to avoid showing that crowd?
If not for the internet, one might have thought Obama was speaking to the wind.

McCain couldn't draw 75,000 people to his own funeral. It's over.

The local TV station carried coverage with helicopter shots and it was amazing. Not only was the venue packed, there were people outside who couldn't get in, boats on the river, people on the bridge and people across the river looking on. The 75,000 number comes from the Portland Fire and Rescue, not the Obama campaign, so it is a real number, no spin!!!

75,000 (mostly) white folks? Maybe some of them actually work too. Don't believe the MSM hype.

35 thousand thousand? Wow, I had no idea he was that popular. I suddenly understand all of the cult references. (Although I think at 35 million, you've gone beyond being a simple cult.)
Sorry, couldn't resist the snark. I know you'll forgive me. ;)

You make a good point. So why is he only winning the popular vote 51/49 and ahead a little over 100 in delegates? I would think it would be a lot more than that. I mean if you can draw 75,000 surely. you know?
May 18, 2008 9:45 PM | Reply | Permalink
A little over 100? He's at 191 now (per DCW, other sites don't differ by much). I think that's closer to 200 then it is to 100, wouldn't you agree?

Its ok. You don't have to answer the obvious point I was trying to make. But thats ok. Cause in the end winning Alabama and Missippi means more than winning PA and Ohio.

I assumed it was a rhetorical question. Here's your answer: because he's running against another very gifted candidate. Isn't that a reasonable explanation?

Obama refused to pay street money in Philly. Hillary's campaign was paying union members $20hr to work for her campaign on the weekends....Obama couldn't pay street money because it's "old politics" and if he had won, it would have looked like he was buying votes....He couldn't win for losing....The untold story. Considering what Obama was up against in PA. He did very well.

Check the map. We're 60miles from the Pacific, those are the placid waters of the Willamette River you're seeing.
I just checked Kash's link, you're facing south along the west bank of the Willamette there, that extension of the crowd to the tail is probably six pretty long city blocks, that knot of boats to the left past the first point is like a mile. and there is some width there, considering all the approaches were probably packed too.
Is there a shot of the Kerry event in May '04, which was the previous record-holder for largest political public event in Oregon history? That would be the only cause to quibble.
I let it go 'cause my garden and my second business badly needed attention, I'm not far from where Bill C. was in North Clackamas but hadn't heard a word that he would be there, I might've gone to heckle him about NAFTA or empire or something. I did get to be "morning clipboard guy" for the previous-to-that record-holder of largest political event in Oregon, the Peace March the weekend before the invasion in March '03, where we had a continuous march of 35,000 people from the downtown park blocks thru a big square 40 city blocks in perimeter and arriving back at the Park Blocks before the last could leave.
Portland does seem to keep getting cooler and cooler in cultural terms, I was very touched at my first job, as a union grocery clerk in a huge place in the colder, ruder section of Portland where we bust our butts in the corridors of the underclass at 6 am to meet all of management's weird directives, a 60-year old black guy was expressing how "I never thought I'd see the day of a possible black President ..." and I was going, "Mr. Cool has proven he's the best man for the job, we so need a change of temperature!"

I'm extraordinarily proud of my former home state today. My youngest brother was there with his wife. He said it was stirring to be in that crowd as it chanted "yes we can."
Another sibling living in Salem has already voted for Obama. My parents in Eugene also plan to vote for him. I really hope Oregon will give Obama a huge win to offset Clinton's expected win in KY. Fingers and toes crossed.

Originally from the Northwest, mainly Portland area and now in Alaska. Portland waterfront is terrific and the city is a virtual tour of various colors/styles in flowers, architecture and humanity. There is quite a bit more community activism as in knowing the issues and standing up for the cause (whatever it is at the time).
I think there's a good chance that Obama will do really well in Alaska too. We have to get rid of Stevens and Young just like we did Governor Murkowski. Alaska is about ten years behind the times - but new, young people are moving in and it seems many of the old red necks are moving out. We have a woman (republican) Governor now who is pretty good. Maybe President Obama will come here to extend some of that 'across the aisle'goodwill. Hope so.

My wife, daughter and I spent some time in Portland over Spring break. We absolutely loved it. The people are laid back, friendly and quite diverse. I work in Seattle and trek all over the Northwest but I get to Portland and the Oregon coast as much as I can.
Today's event is not a huge surprise in a sense, considering the people there. On the other hand that's just a huge crowd for anything, let alone a political event. Amazing.

"Are there pole dancers"
Oregonians in fact are a bit prudish but fierce against censorship and have consistently voted to keep exotic dancing free from most rules, g-strings etc. Portland has more exotic dancing joints that any other city in the US.
Just keeping it real, dude.

75 MILLION plus in Oregon, huge crowds in Philadephia. They are there for the "history" especially if Obama makes it to the White House. Let's face it, on personality, he is more likeable, something the national polls showed prior to the start of the political campaigns of both (Democratic) candidates.
