"I've had enough of Hussein."

Are the good sheeple of West Virginia the most racist, uneducated, and misinformed voters in America? Or will Kentucky top them next week? I’m willing to bet that the lovely white ladies who were interviewed by the news networks, and then showcased on The Daily Showlast night got their learnin’ from the fair and balanced Fox News. I’m also willing to bet that each lovely lady has already ordered a Barack Obama t-shirt.

Watch and cringe. (The interviews start at 1:49.)

Now, let’s examine each quote one by one...

"I guess because he is another race.  I'm sorta scared of the other race 'cause we have so much conflict with 'em”

Exactly what sort of conflict are the good sheeple of West Virginia having with other races other than white folk?  Are there even any non-whites in West Virginia?  Where do they hide?  I bet in caves.  Hell, I would too.

“He's Muslim, and that has a lot to do with it.”

This woman obviously watches Fox News.  I can't think of any other place where she could have been fed that dribble.  She probably also believes we found WMDs in Iraq.  Fox News incorrectly reported that too, just like they have repeatedly reported that Obama is a Muslim.

“I don't like the Hussein thing.  I've had enough of Hussein.”

This woman is my favorite.  You can see the seriousness in her eyes.  She has had enough of Hussein!  In her defense, she dated Saddam Hussein in high school.  I'm kidding!  She never went to high school.  I should be easy on her.  After all, she was part of the resistance during the war when Iraq invaded West Virginia.

I wonder where she buys her muumuus...

Do you think the majority of West Virginians know they are a disgrace not only to America but to humanity as well?  Do you think they know that a plurality of the country is mocking them and having a good laugh at their expense?  Do you think they even care?  Do you think they are intelligent enough to comprehend?

I think not.

This post illustrates why liberals are disliked because of their elitism. Mocking people because of their lack of education is the sort of thing that has put Republicans in the White House time after time. No wonder the people of West Virginia, who used to vote reliably for Democrats are not doing so now.

Troll much?

Do you think anyone who points out the obvious is a troll? Look, this post makes people on the left look bad. This is the sort of thing that allows the right wing to accuse liberals of being elitist. I don't need to be a Republican to point that out. Open you eyes. Realize that when the Republicans accuse the Democrats of being elitists it resonates for a reason. This post illustrates what that reason is. Mocking these people in West Virginia is not apt to win them over, is it? Nor is it apt to win anyone else over. It illustrates an attitude that hurts us and plays into the hands of the Bushes and the Roves. Not good, especially when Obama has been wounded politically with accusations of being elitist. This post emphasizes why those attacks work. Reflexively assuming that only a Republican troll would point this out shows a closed mindedness that will damage those opposed to the pro-capitalist pro-war side. If you think I'm a troll you are silly. Wake up.

I'm far from elitist.

These weren't Republicans I was (not) "mocking" but Democrats. They simply weren't voting for Obama because he's black and a Muslim -- they are misinformed because they probably watch Fox News. They were Hillary supporters.

Closed mindedness is not voting for Obama if Hillary is his running mate.

Let me be even more clear: I am accusing you of playing into the hands of the Bushes, the McCains, the Roves. Mocking poor working class West Virginians for their being ill informed pushes them even deeper into the right-wing camp. It is a self defeating attitude and should be discouraged. Don't act this way unless you want to lose people like this again. Mockery rarely wins anyone to your side, even though you can make yourself feel superior.

I imagine none of these people read TPM or watch The Daily Show. So I don't think I have single handily destroyed the Democratic party.

I'm not accusing you of single-handedly destroying the Democratic Party. But you are expressing an attitude that has not helped the Democratic Party or the liberal causes more generally. I lived in Boston when a federal court ordered busing of school children to achieve racial balance in the public schools. The court order was supported by the liberal political establishment, but the liberals who supported the order took their own children out of the public schools and put them in private schools so that they wouldn't have to be bussed. They also spoke in words similar to yours that disparaged the poor Irish whites in South Boston who opposed having their children bused. The poor Irish whites quickly came to hate the liberals. Racial animosity was fanned. To what good end were the disparaging words that mocked the poor whites, other than making the upper and middle class liberals feel morally superior. This is no way to build a movement. Jon Stewart isn't trying to build a movement but to elevate ratings. Is that your excuse? True, you are not single handedly ruining the Democratic Party, but you are a contributor when you use this sort of class-based mocking of the poor whites who are victims of the economic system and who should be encouraged to be on the left. You are pushing them further right. Who is the troll?

Let them come to the right.

Voting for Hillary is voting for someone who consistently has voted for big business interests and consistently has been pro war. She far to the right of Dwight Eisenhower. But she's smart enough as a politician not to mock poor white people. She's smart enough to get people to vote against their self interest and vote for her. When she calls herself a progressive candidate, she makes a silly claim, but it has been fooling a lot of voters. Right wing populists have been smart enough to poach votes on a massive scale from silly liberals who mock poor whites. A vote for Hillary is a vote for the bankers and for the military-industrial complex. A vote for Obama may not be, although we don't yet know what he will turn out to be. But why would you want to drive poor white West Virginians towards the right wing permanently? Mocking them isn't smart politics and it isn't a decent thing to do. Pick on someone your own size.

How do you know they're poor? You're making assumptions that they are poor as I made assumptions that they are not educated

I'm not a politician. I'm a humanist and a humorist.

Check out the facts about West Virginia in terms of average income. This was a working class state filled with strong union members in such industries as coal mining. The unions there, like the rest of the country, systematically have been weakened. Traditional mining jobs have been disappearing. The land has been raped with a change to a new form of mining that simply rips the tops of mountains and poisons the water table. The education and economic levels in Appalachia are among the lowest in our country. I don't doubt that you are a humanist and a humorist (at least in terms of your self image), but your use of this sort of mockery won't win many West Virginians to vote for a Democrat this November. Mockery and insults may feel like humor, but they are not effective ways to win people to our side. Stop it if you want real change that includes the people you mock.

As to me being closed minded because I won't for for Hillary for any position: I don't vote for people who claim to be progressive and act consistently against progressive interests. I don't vote for people who consistently vote for wars and who use bellicose language to advance their political careers. I'm not open to supporting such things, so I suppose I'm closed minded in that. Wouldn't have voted in the 1850s for a politician who supported slavery. Would have been closed minded about that, too. Can't vote for Hillary; she's on the wrong side. She's too Republican for me.

From one Obama supporter to another, you fail on both counts of humor and humanity. Be more respectful of your fellows.

I'm an Obama supporter? Don't make assumptions about my political affiliations. I'm voting for McCain.

That explains everything. Carry on, then.

You're a humorist in your fucking dreams. No place else...

Well, if we're going to get personal, you're old.

Your proclamation that you support McCain brings shame to the Red Sox Nation.

I hate Boston -- a truly racist city filled with truly elitist people -- and I consider things like the Red Sox to be a waste of one's time and life.

Thankfully I won't have to live here much longer.

Another humanist filled with hate! I guess this is the example of your also being a humorist.

I presume you're not moving to West Virginia. Another group of people you hate?

I'm going to move out of the country. Probably end up in France. I have a great deal of respect for the French, unlike many in America.

I might return after the crazy Christians in America have their apocalypse. They're all going to be shocked to learn the world continues without them.

out of the loop...I wanted to tip my hat to you here for trying to explain humanity to the alleged humorist. The candidate you and I have supported is different but your reasoned responses to the offensive post were admirable to me. Just sayin'...

Yes, truly admirable. Unlike Indlex.

Allow me to express my sympathies to the French.

I'll leave you alone after this response, but allow me to say something about your expressed hatred for Boston and its elitism and racism. Of course, you're not the first person to express such thoughts about Boston. I lived in Boston for several years, although I left there in 1975. It indeed has its share of elitist liberals, as I expressed earlier in my comments about the liberal Bostonians behaviors during the school busing crisis in the early 70s. But Boston also has a large poor black population in Roxbury, lower-class Italian and Irish populations concentrated in the North End and in Southie, and many immigrant populations including Cabo Verdians, West Indians, Africans, etc. If you look for good people there, you'll find them in abundance. There's even good in the elitist liberals! Boston has its share of right wingers and racists also. Boston doesn't have the heterogeneity of New York, where I live now, or even of São Paulo in Brazil, but its a lot more interesting and mixed than your description suggests. Maybe you should stay there a while longer before going to France so that you can find the goodness mixed in among the things you don't like. By the way, France isn't exactly lacking in elitism. But it's also filled with Arabs, Africans, West Indians, etc., and Paris is a world-class interesting city. But if you can't find good folk in Boston, perhaps you won't be ready to find them in France either. Bom voyage.

Somewhere along the way I think we both lost track of the initial point here. I'd like to continue (or rather start) a serious discussion over email.
