"Hillary, My Eyes Are Up Here."

OMFG... That is hilarious. THANK YOU TM!

a perfect example of crap-speak

And your post adds what to the conversation?

I'm only here to learn. Do you know second position yet?

Man, you know how to talk to a musician don't you. Good luck shutting me up now.

I'm actually more of a fiddler than a violinist, and I'm still fairly green. I DO know how to play in what I assume is second position, but only because I've got 10 years of serious mandolin playing under my belt and I've been blessed with a relatively accurate ear.

Though my small violin repertoire consists almost entirely of archaic modal tunes from the American southeast, I am working hard to learn to play the instrument with a violinists technique, like Jean Carignan is noted for in the French Canadian fiddling tradition.

Basically, my ultimate dream would be to play the music of Tommy Jarrell with the command of the instrument achieved by Kogan or Milstein.

Archaic modal tunes from the southeast. Now you're talking some real good stuff. Give me some names of the tunes. That pickin' thing on the mandolin....kinda hard. I tried to pick up some oud
licks. Couldn't make that deal work.

JUST SO YOUS SKIMMERS KNOW, WE ARE WAY OFF THREAD HERE.

I'm really into cross-tuning right now, AEAE or LowDDAD. I play "Dry and Dusty," "Raleigh and Spencer" and "Bonaparte's Retreat" in that low D tuning (which Aaron Copeland stole note for note from William Stepp and turned into Hoe-Down in Rodeo)

I could play "Western Country/Susanna Gal" for hours. Ditto with Tommy Jarrell's "Drunken Hiccups" (AKA "Rye Whiskey")

I play a North Carolina version of "Cumberland Gap" that I learned from a Brad Leftwich recording.

I live in the Rockies, and there are some standards out west that I can fumble through, "Red Haired Boy," "Whiskey Before Breakfast," "Soldiers Joy," and the like.

But I am hopelessly addicted to attempting that droning, primal growl of the Cohee moonshiners and the modal melodies of the Old Regular Baptists.

You realize that the root source of the tunes are AngloCelitc right? The tunings are cool because the modalities lie more easily in the fingers than the traditional fiddle fifths.

You seem like a good candidate for Sacred Harp Singing.

In case you get back to this, yes, I know that the fiddle is imitating the pipes in many of these tunes, but I'm particularly interested in the sounds that got trapped in the Ozarks and the Smokies for half century or so.

I have a DEEP attraction to all things violin right now, though. If I hadn't blocked YouTube from my work computer, I'd spend every minute soaking it in. The Kogan and Heifetz Paganini Caprices are astounding, and the Cajun drones of Dewey Balfa moves me to tears.

When I sing, I prefer to sing Bluegrass. There may be no finer voices on this earth to my ear than Carter and Ralph Stanley, and I'm lucky enough to have some friends and family that I can imitate their harmonies with on a regular basis.

Cypher is now #1 on my $hitlist.

Wow, what a well endowed woman won't go to, to prove a point! :)

Her support for Obama really, uh, stands out!

Speaking of people's chests, Barack Obama wore a flag pin last night. We'll see how the dilligent and serious news organizations handle this groundbreaking news...

They already mentioned it on CNN this morning. This is a battle not worth fighting. Obama should just concede the point and wear the freakin' pin.

avatar

He's worn the flag pin when speaking to veteran's groups before...

Let me repeat my analysis from a previous thread on Obama just conceding to wear the flag pin:

Fuck that.

I agree. It bugged me that he caved on that.

More from the W Virginny diner.

Shout out to VegasGuy for these.

FYI, I am getting the following message on my computer screen when I click on the link for the pics:
Site ak.imgfarm.com blocked; this is a known spyware/adware website.

This in on my system at work, where we have excellent antivirus/spyware protection.

It's a pic of the same lady sitting in a booth.

OS/X ain't afraid of no steenking Weendows viruses.

When it lets that nasty Windows crap into the code with the duo chip what happens? Just wondering.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. It looks like it's an image server, owned by Ask Jeeves. I'm guessing they probably host some banner ads that are dicey, so the entire domain shows up as suspect. Probably nothing, but thanks for the heads-up.

I was expecting a post on Hillary's obsession with white working class men.

avatar

Obama should do what's in his heart concerning the pin.
As for the billboard... You can't buy advertising like that!!!

Her eyes are somewhere around the woman's necklace and her collar. She'd have to have her neck bent over to be looking where you act like she's looking. Anyway, can we stop the kindergarten behavior and get back to your typical juvenile comments?

That's rich.

des

go up and give that goat thing some lessons on graphics

what with the flashing collar and now this...."goat goes hippie"

you look like Renoir --well...not quite right, but...

avatar

Dude, I can look at crotch level without bending my neck, so, unless women are less flexible then men or something, one of us needs to see a doctor.

avatar

Why is this post recommended? What's the punchline? Is it that Hillary Clinton speaks to people who support Senator Obama? I doubt that; that would be entirely inconsistent with Hillary Clinton is evil think. Is it that the woman with the Obama shirt has big boobs, and that Hillary has lesbian tendencies because she is allegedly looking at the woman's boobs?

What am I missing here? Well, as an antidote, all of you feminists who think boob jokes are funny might want to read about what Marie Coco has to say about the pervasive sexism that has been utterly ignored by one-half of the Party in this campaign. Read it and laugh if you'd like, or read it and weep if you're a real Democrat.

http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2008/05/clinton_campaign_brought_sexis.html

Oh, come on, you two. I fully agree that there's plenty of misogyny in some of the visceral Clinton hatred we've been seeing for years, and I do not find sexist attacks on Clinton (or Michelle Obama) at all endearing.

But fer pete's sake. That's not what's going on with this picture. It's just a joke. Maybe you don't find it funny, and that's your right. But ain't no hating going on here. Lighten up.

avatar

Lighten up? Would you lighten up if you saw a picture on Free Republic of Senator Obama eating a nice piece of red and juicy watermelon? Me neither.

Res ipsa loquitor.

Res ipsa loquitor. [sic]

Apparently not, since reasonable people can disagree as to whether this res is as self-evidently outrageous as you find it to be. But if you think it's worthy of an important battle, fight on ...

avatar

Hee. Who is fighting? I responded to your comment, which was directed to me. Would you rather I be rude? Don't worry, I'm satsfied, and I'm done.

avatar

How is looking at breasts a stereotype? You're comparing racist imagery to innuendo.

Why is this post recommended? What's the punchline?

If you'd take your eyes off of the woman's breasts and focus for a moment on that dazzling smile of hers, you wouldn't have to ask that question.

That gal is kicking ass and loving every minute of it, cameras and all. She's got guts, and she's not afraid to show who she is both inside and out.

That woman is a LOT more than a chest, but that's all you seem to be able to see her for.

That's what I saw there, too. To me, that grin said, "Read 'em and weep, Hillary!"

HAHAHAH THAT IS HISTERICAL!!! Wow she got caught!! There are also other points I wanted to bring up about the Democrat party, in which I had found posted on YourThreeCents.com

I hope Obama would not allow party insiders/leaders to convince him to put Clintion on the ticket as VP. While I believe Mrs. Clinton is able to fill either position, she brings too much baggage to the table with her, i.e., Bill Clinton. There can be only one captain steering a ship, with her on the ticket it would be as though there were three. President Obama,President want to be VP Clinton and former President Clintion. What a nightmare?!!!!

Further, It's time we had a diplomat as president again.

I think it would actually be to Obama's advantage to put Hillary in the ticket. It's not going to make anyone NOT vote for him and vote for McCain, but the people that wouldn't vote for him may reconsider if he has a woman as VP. Especially after the battle they've gone through. He's going to need someone with experience by his side when they start bringing up Obama's patriotism in the General election.

It really does feel like he won it.

Desidero and bslev, shall I beg for your forgiveness for endulging in this silly post? Do I need to denounce and reject the poster as a sexist? If you have a blog post on sexism I would be happy to go have a read and contribute to the discussion on what I agree is an important issue. But, I really doubt it is what drives your attacks here.

avatar

whoffman:

What drives you to oppose racism? The same thing that drives me, I assume. One can question another's motives if it makes one feel better. Of course, that begs the question. Indeed, let's assume that I am motivated entirely by blind loyalty to Senator Clinton. Does it make what you have done any more defensible?

I'm all eyes. Defend what you have done here. Tell us what the joke is. The only joke I see here is that, conveniently, you would take a fellow Democrat and assume right away that he or she would combat sexist trash only because of his or her support for this or that candidate. What a strange concept to rest on.

What has happened to the base?

avatar

Oh and do yourself a favor if you want to be a real progressive some day. Read Marie Coco and study what she has written. And, when you are finished, tell us whether you think Ms. Coco is also motivated solely by blind loyalty to Senator Clinton. And, then, try again to explain what is so funny and compelling about your highly recommended post. Again, I'm all eyes.

As far as the joke goes, I understand it to be one in defense of sexism where the man staring at the woman's breast is the butt of said joke. Did I think Hillary was really staring at her breasts? Obviously not. Clearly she's reading the shirt. It was just silly, in part because it was an Obama shirt. I can understand if you don't think it is silly or funny, but to accuse people who do of being sexist seems a bit extreme.

As far as the article, it raises some important points but also ignores others. Her own supporters have made comments about her having more balls and testostorone recently, which I think encourages sexism. Below is from my last blog post:

"I don't think there has been enough discussion about the challenges of a woman running for President.

Maybe they were crocodile tears earlier in the campaign, but that's a difficult judgement to make. Politics don't leave much room for empathy. And, more than any other candidate Hillary must maintain her tough "guy" image with the general public. Many see it as a contradiction and perceive her to be cold and calculated. Even calling into question her decision to stay with Bill. I don't think this is fair."

Happy to continue the conversation with you, but maybe you should start your own blog post citing the article...I don't think this post was meant for serious discussion. TM?

avatar

Thank you for your civil reply. I would love to continue the conversation at some point, although posting and resonding to folks takes too much work lol. I am an avid supporter of Hillary Clinton, but I have announced: (a) that I think Obama has won; and (b) he will have my full-throttled support in November.

I don't think this picture is funny, and I do think that it is, at best, effectively sexist. I don't condone racist innuendo and I was embarassed by Hillary's clumsy-at-best reference to hardworking white workers last week. I try to be objective, and sometimes it doesn't happen. But that doesn't mean that this type of stuff should be condoned, and I will continue to call things as I see them. In this contest, I think that it is readily apparent that this nation has a long way to go before it can really be said that we recognize the negative manner in which women are perceived and treated in our society. Maybe I'm more sensitive because I'm the father of three daughters, and maybe I'm just oversensitized because of my allegiance to Hillary Clinton. But my motivations are, again, ultimately immaterial.

Thanks again for engaging and for taking the time to read Ms. Coco's article.

Bruce

I appreciated your post in support of Obama and objective outlook. I've got two daughters myself :o)

avatar

Two daughters? Good for you. This incredibly intense campaign sometimes makes us forget how much so many of us have in common with one another.

Well, it sure reduced that Obama supporter to nothing more than a nice set of knockers, didn't it?

I'm sorry the abject sexism of that seems to be lost on normally sensitive "liberals."

Actually, I reveled in the ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT SMIRK on her face a lot more than her breasts.

I'm sorry, but the giggle in that photo doesn't come from some "frat boy" mammary objectification, or some subconscious misogyny. The joy in that photo comes directly from deep inside a strong, sassy woman who is PROUD of who she is, both physically and politically. She is OWNING that moment and loving every minute of it!

So please, let the gal shine!

Tell them:

Wow, what a well endowed woman won't go to, to prove a point! :) Posted by Caringthinkingperson May 13, 2008 6:30 AM | Reply | Permalink
Her support for Obama really, uh, stands out! Posted by JohnDoe May 13, 2008 8:13 AM | Reply | Permalink

Pity they don't see it that way, eh?

It was not meant to be serious. It is a play on sexism - I found it funny. A friend of mine posted that on another site along with other pics of the Obama woman in the diner full of media people while Hillary came in from the parking lot, spoke to people with HRC pins etc. This was not a serious post and if it was sexist I am very sure there would be credible analysis of how and why this was offensive to women. As a father of a 6 month old girl, I definitely am not in favor of misogynistic humor. I'm sorry if anyone seriously views it in that light.

A friend of mine posted that on another site along with other pics of the Obama woman

The "Obama woman?"

Sorry, what I see is an informed voter gutsy enough to walk into a Clinton event wearing her rivals shirt. A move worthy of some respect whatever her sex OR race.

I'd think that if she was my daughter, I'd be damned proud of her for being informed and unafraid to confront the competition.

"Obama woman." Wow. Way to dehumanize that informed and engaged voter.

I think that perhaps the problem here is that most of the 30 and younger set has never had to face down relentless, "harmless" jokes like this in the workplace. That's largely thanks to those of us that have and did face them down, to make things better for you.

I'm sorry that you can't see the sexism, against one of Obama's own, no less. Unreal.

The story ought to be about this engaged voter and what she asked Senator Clinton. It sure would be a lot more interesting, and somewhat just to that admirable voter.

Instead we're supposed to laugh because her chest distorts the words "Obama 08."

I don't think her bust size is the distortion here.

Oh my bad, sub "Obama Woman" with "The Obama humanoid with high melanin levels."
I didn't realize calling her a woman was sexist. Thanks for clearing that up.

smh

How about "that Obama supporter?" Or does the word supporter evoke jock straps to the grade school mentality here? Tee hee.

The story ought to be about this engaged voter and what she asked Senator Clinton. It sure would be a lot more interesting, and somewhat just to that admirable voter.

Disagree? Why wouldn't that story be more interesting and/or inspirational?

Why must she be reduced to a pair of breasts?

Seems to me that those pandering to racial and gender stereotypes at this point are Obama supporters.

They are the ones stoking that fire. Hope it doesn't burn you too badly.

avatar

So Wonder Woman is sexist?

How is looking at breasts a stereotype? You're comparing racist imagery to innuendo. Posted by Scalfin May 13, 2008 10:19 PM | Reply | Permalink

You are obviously OK with gender stereotypes.

How utterly unimpressive.

Lighten up? Would you lighten up if you saw a picture on Free Republic of Senator Obama eating a nice piece of red and juicy watermelon? Me neither

How do you go from staring at someones chest and joking to eating some watermelon which, you obviously are making at a racial stereo type?

Are you stupid?

A reasonable analogy would have been "Would you lighten up if you saw a picture of Obama staring at some guys/girls ass?".

And I dont really find the pic to be entirely too "funny". I get the joke. I just didnt get a "haha" out of it.

Re-Lax

Well, respectfully, I think he did it that way because sexism isn't a tactic being used against Obama in an ugly fashion. Racism, however, is an ugly tactic being used against Obama, thus Bruce's analogy carries the same "sting" for Hillary's supporters. Rightly so.

I find this type of amusement to be pretty much against everything I believe in with regards to womens equality. It's "fueling Republican tactics" against her, and the democrats, in the general.

Plus it's just poor form. It's low humor. Very low.

Bruce's analogy carries the same "sting" for Hillary's supporters.

Doh! I meant Bruce's analogy carries the same "sting" for Obama's supporters.

Apologies.

avatar

Too late. One sting per defense of Bruce! I hope you don't start charging me. :)

avatar

I can't help it. The poster writes, and I quote:

"How do you go from staring at someones chest and joking to eating some watermelon which, you obviously are making at a racial stereo type?"

And then the poster asks me if I'm stupid.

You cannot make this stuff up. :)

There's a sort of over-the-top loopiness lately that has all the charm of a made for TV movie. DRAMA! SUSPENSE! HYSTERIA!

Content? Well, no. Not really. Humor? I suppose, if you like it low-brow. Oh, and the authoritative, we will tolerate NO dissent!! nonsense is really getting old. Did you see that 55% of Democrats want Hillary as VP?They must know something the cafe doesn't.

There was another post that started "You Hillary supporters better be careful what you wish for."

I mean, drama much people? Good grief!

Oh boy, golly gee, what fun, sophomoric frat boy humor is now shown to be popular with the TPM audience. Yuck yuck, back slap.

This is what you wanted, Josh Marshall? 19 recommends so far, and it's exactly what I originally came to this site fleeing, all those frat boy liberal blogs forums with caption contests about big boobs or Bush falling off his bicycle or some Tony Blair awkward moment, to add a little "lightening up" inbetween the main fare of "smackdowns" and "outrage."

Anyone still left that's interested in striving to the still relatively low level of sophistication of Saturday Night Live, Giblets, or The Onion?

The irony is I bet some of the people enjoying this picture bitch about the dumbing down of MSM coverage, and I imagine some of you are also the ones I've seen who appear incapable of understanding RenStimpy's jokes, mistaking them for your kind of humor instead of lethal parodies of the same.

Carry on boys and girls, but if anyone knows where the grownups are hanging out, please let me know. I'm as open to anyone to good jokes about Hillary and Obama. Where are they?

The blogsophere remains overall one big frat house, that's all I see.

I actualy thought that this was a parrody of making fun of men who are reading a shirt but are assumed to be oggeling.

Hee hee, I thought it was a parody of men who are ogling but pretend to be reading a shirt.

Was that a parody of effete elitism, or was it for real?

Oh, tee hee.

'Effeminate' liberals. Let's slam them.

Well boys, just give us a pass. Maybe it's that time of the month.

This blog post from artappraiser seems to contradict his comments here.
http://tpmcafe.talkingpointsmemo.com/talk/2008/02/parody-long-overdue.php

How is that? In my comment above I asked if there was anyone around that might be anyone around who was interested in at least getting to the level of Saturday Night Live humor.

Actually I learned recently that I am quite a fan of SNL writer Jim Downey who it turns out is responsible for some of the funniest political debate parodies of my memory. Sorry, I really don't see him as trying to pass off a photo of Hillary, or any other presidential candidate, staring at a large set of boobs as the height of political comedy. It's the same old sophomoric frat house Atrios crowd shtick, i.e., Bush falls off bicycle, hah hah hah.

I mean, really, it's pitiful that 21 people have now recommended this simple link to a photo. I don't know about Josh Marshall, but that's revealing of a reader demographic that is of little interest to me. I recall that longtime member "cscs," now on sabbatical after a final April 8 comment declaration that the new TPMCafe sucks, pegged this demographic so well, summing up the Election Central commenting style as "your candidate wears poopy pants, your candidate wears poopy pants!" while asking and hoping that it be spun off from the TPMCafe site.

It boggles my own mind to think of the kind of brain that finds a photo of Hillary staring at someone's chest qualifying as "parody." A parody of WHAT? It's 2nd grade humor.

My most sincere apologies to you for my ignorance and low-brow-ness.

It's funny, you'd think that someone who claims to make their living assessing the value of visual communication would take a little time to REALLY try and understand why people find this image valuable.

She does understand it. Second grade humor. It's not particularly admirable.

I'd find your "the grin was what actually stuck out" defense a bit more convincing if I saw you get after the majority in this thread that said it was her chest.

You didn't, which makes your rationalization fairly nonsensical and patently dishonest.

Patently dishonest?

And you say others are judgmental her?

give me a break!

It's related to how successful one wants to be in that area of visual representation!

if anyone knows where the grownups are hanging out, please let me know.

They got bored and left.

Tweety just called her the Al Sharpton of white people.

ARGH!

YOU WENCHES HAVE NO SENSE OF HUMOR!

TAKE A LESSON FROM WENCH HILLARY:
SHE MARRIED BILL!

AND SHE HAS BOSSOM ENVY!

ACQUIRE! MERGE! MARAUD! DILUTE! DILUTE!

ARGH!
