George McGovern Defects to Obama, Calls for Hillary to Drop Out

George McGovern had previously endorsed Hillary. He's a longtime friend of the Clintons, and gave a young Bill his start in politics back around 1972 when McGovern ran against Nixon for the presidency. McGovern just announced that he is switching his endorsment to Obama, and is calling on Hillary to do the right thing and drop out of the race.

Source? I'd love to see this.

For those, like me, who were wondering: McGovern is not a superdelegate.

McGovern is the new caucus state.

This was just announced on MSNBC. I'm looking for a link and will post it when I find it.

By DENNIS GALE Associated Press Writer SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) Former Sen. George McGovern, an early supporter of Hillary Clinton, is urging her to drop out of the Democratic presidential race.

McGovern says he has decided to endorse Barack Obama.

After watching the returns from the North Carolina and Indiana primaries Tuesday night, McGovern says it's virtually impossible for Clinton to win the nomination.

McGovern says he is calling former President Clinton to tell him of the decision and adds that he remains close friends with the Clintons.

Is there any reason to switch alliances at this juncture? Why not just tell Hillary it's over. Not sure what the significance to switching an endorsement does if he's not a superdelegate.

McGovern is a well-respected party elder. He's attempting to begin the healing process and is getting behind Obama as an example that others should follow his lead.

Can anyone point in the right direction to being able to upload an avatar. I keep getting a error message that it did not copy any bytes over. It shouldn't be this hard, right?

jpeg files work best. Size it to 64 pixels wide and it should work.

Actually, I had trouble with jpegs for some reason that is unexplainable. I use gifs and it cleared the problem up.

hmmm...then the mystery continus....

McGovern had first endorsed Hillary on October 7, 2007 at the Iowa barbecue that all of the Dem candidates attended and was reported in the LA Times:

He (McGovern)recalled receiving a phone call in 1972 from his campaign manager, someone named Gary Hart, saying he'd come upon a bright, young man in Arkansas named Bill Clinton who had a hardworking friend named Hillary Rodham and they both were going to work Texas for McGovern.

"There's nothing in politics," said McGovern, "that requires more courage than trying to sell George McGovern in Texas." The crowd roared. McGovern praised the entire current field of Democratic candidates and said he hoped to live long enough to see an African American president. But, he added, "We have an old rule of courtesy in the United States: ladies first." Another crowd roar.

And thus the Democratic candidate from 1972 returned the favor to the wannabe Democratic candidate of 2008. He endorsed her candidacy.

The man who helped get the Clintons into politics back in 1972, has just read the writing on the wall for them.

Hillary was involved in politics long before McGovern. You can Wiki her biography. Quite interesting.

It would probably be more accurate to say that this was the point where Bill's political career began to take off and Hillary put her's on the back-burner.

This is HUGE!!!!!

They have been extremely close for decades. The have a long and intimate history.

It's entirely possible he did talk to her. Perhaps the public declaration gives her a platform to exit the race graciously.

No matter what led to this announcement, it will have a tremendous echo within the party.

This is remarkable. I just wrote a post about how Obama is no McGovern based on McGovern's own words. Not only did pegging him as McGovern fail, he now has the respected Senator's support.

To me, this is an interesting point in the game. I'm curious to see how Hillary's advocates are going to intervene and finesse this issue of telling her that it's time to be gracious and bow out. McGovern, of course, is huge because he has been a mentor and political guide to both Hillary and Bill since way back.

Slippage is starting when Sen. Feinstein, a staunch supporter of Sen. Clinton and super-delegate, starts to ask questions in a public form.

Did anyone write to their Senators or Representatives in the House to push the questions to the fore?

McGovern, Feinstein, Virginia DNC member Jennifer McClellan, I wonder how the meeting with the Supers went this afternoon?

Here's an interesting line that no one has commented on:

McGovern says he is calling former President Clinton to tell him of the decision and adds that he remains close friends with the Clintons.

Why not call Hillary directly?

I wonder if some of Hillary's claims on co-presidency (which I never bought) may have come back to bite her...

I can understand placing a private call to Bill to have him convince Hillary... but if you are going to announce it, I would have thought he would be calling Hillary directly.

I thought that was an interesting line as well. I suppose McGovern sees Bill as his prodigy and has a closer relationship with him. But it does stand out that McGovern would seek to counsel Bill to be the one to break the news to Hillary. It points to an interesting dynamic in a very old political friendship.

I remember McGovern's visit to San Francisco in 1972. He came to the Cow Palace (it's really called that) to deliver his stump speech. I was one of his cheering young supporters. I remember at the conclusion how he looked at his watch. A few months later we got another Nixon term. At least it didn't last 4 more years.

That campaign was the first time McGovern disappointed me. Today was the second.

I guess you could say that George McGovern knows when it's time to get off the stage.

I appreciate how difficult this must feel for you, Otto F.

DF has a nice thread going on who McCain's VP choice might be. Please go recommend it so it doesn't drop off the list:

The McGovern endorsement gives me a sick feeling as I picture the disappointment of the past presidential election loses - McGovern, Humphrey, Dukakis, Mondale, Gore, Kerry....

I fear the democrats are now picking a candidate they would like to see as president but have not really thought about whether the candidate can defeat Bush III.

Just imagine Obama vs. McCain in a series of debates and then think about Hillary vs. McCain in those debates. 'Kind of a sick feeling, huh?

Yeah cause if its Obama he is gonna get his AZZ handed to him.
