Don't Miss The Forest For The Trees
We spend too much time talking about what we fear may happen over the next six months - floor fights, continued thinly veiled racism, a divided party, a third Bush term.
Lets make sure we are also thinking about what can and likely will happen as this election plays out. These are the moments I'm looking forward to, please feel free to add your own:
1. The moment when Barack and Hillary come together. I often think about this as a fight between siblings - Brothers and sisters will say some awful things to each other - but all they need to come together is an outside threat. There have been opportunities for this to happen in the last few months and I am dissapointed that it hasn't happened yet, but when it does, it will be something to see. Imagine Hillary and (gulp) Bill campaigning in Appalachia for Barack. I know there are plenty of statements that have been made by the HRC team that make this difficult, but once she decides to make it happen, I have faith in her abilities as a politician to be effective.
2. The collective realization by the political media that the reason McCain has been polling even with either Barack or Hillary is that he has been polled against Barack OR Hillary, not both working together (whether on the same ticket or not). We've seen enough exit polls showing people who say they would vote for McCain if their Democrat loses to know that some of these people are probably answering that way when polled from a "vs. McCain" perspective. I can't believe that this has not been addressed more fully by Chuck Todd or John King or the like.
3. The Obama campaign against John McCain. There should be no doubt that Barack has been holding back in a serious way until the "end" of the primary. He has done this partly out of respect for Hillary, but mostly so that his message against McCain is not diluted by statements like "if I am the nominee." I look forward to a classy campaign, attacking the policies, not the man. Barack has already shown little tolerance for negative ads on his behalf, and assuming this continues, this should be a campaign we can be proud of.
4. Great Obama Speeches - The Convention (hopefully after Ted Kennedy's Intro), the victory speech on Election Night, the inauguration. Go back and listen to Barack's speech from the 2004 convention. I don't care where your allegiances are - it will give you chills.

There has been a lot of talk from men and women who support Hillary, saying that they want to be able to tell their daughters, "see, you can do anything you want." I respect that feeling - it fills me with hope.
I have a black friend who is giddy with anticipation at telling his son, "see, you can do anything you want."
I want to spend election night at his house, simply to be there to see it when it happens.
