Does John McCain have any chance at all of winning in November?

avatar

We've had a chance to see an uncontested John McCain make speeches and proposals and give interviews.  We've seen him on the straight talk express with his lobbyists.
My assessment is either democratic candidate can beat him in November.  By a landslide.
I'm factoring in the Republican attack machine.  Countered by the Democratic attack machine.  ("100 years in Iraq", "most people are better off now economically"). The severely fractured Republican party.  And the lack of enthusiasm to support John McCain.  Even now.
I've taken into consideration the last eight years of the Bush Administration.  The war.  And the economy.
And considered the record turnout of newly registered voters and the millions of younger voters that are now as influential as any other voter segment.
And the record fundraising by the democrats as compared to the Republicans.
Sen. Clinton would have us believe that John McCain and the Republicans are as strong and united as they were in 2000 and 2004.

And that we should seriously consider which of the democratic candidates has the best chance of winning the general election.
She says all that matters is that a democrat win in November.
I don't buy it.
All that matters is which democrat will be sworn in January 2009.
I believe it will be Barack Obama.
But my post is really about the weakness of the Republican party right now.
I don't think the polls that show match ups between John McCain and the dems will hold up in November.
Does anyone have any reason to believe the Republicans will build the same powerful coalition they had after eight years of the Clinton administration?

I think the Republicans depend on people being low-information voters. When they're engaged, it's harder to pull the wool over their eyes. There's been way too much interest in this election for the Republicans to get away with their usual fare. So, I would agree with you, John McCain is toast.

I'll tell you what I'd do right now if I was a Republican. I would hope that Hillary keeps doing what she's been doing for another two or three months, and I'd help her any way I could. Like trying to pretend Obama and Wright are the same person, calling Obama elitist, more or less subtly fanning the flames on racism.

I would hope that the Dem superdelegates then overturn the pledged delegate result, effectively saying "yeah, you folks wanted Obama but sorry, we're too scared of Republicans and Hillary is a fighter (heck, she could be one of them!)".

From there on, it should be dead easy. People have short memories but most will remember what happened just a few days ago. All I (a hypothetical Republican) would need to say is this: You want a candidate who ran her campaign so badly that she could only get the nomination by changing the rules in the middle of the game? Vote for Hillary. You want a president who has no compunction about destroying a member of her own party when it suits her? Vote for Hillary. You want a president who will tell any lie (Tuzla) to gain an advantage? Vote for Hillary. You want a president who claims 35 years of experience but the most important project she ever took (Hillarycare) on was a flaming disaster? Vote for Hillary. You want a candidate of experience? Vote for McCain!

Could this be the Republican game plan? You gotta wonder.

it will be difficult for many Dem. voters to get proper IDs in order to vote in some states, due to recent Sub-pream Court decision.
