Black Eagle
Sen. Barack Obama became the first American presidential candidate to visit the reservation of the Crow Nation, and in doing so was adopted into the nation under the Crow name "One Who Helps People Throughout the Land."
McCain, on the other hand, would be "Old One Who Bends With the Wind."

My Indian name is "Standing Tall With Pelican Legs".
Lately it's been "Drinking Well With Hollow Legs", but that's beside the point.
Recommended.

Thanks for the link. Shows a great interaction between Obama and that beautiful child. I just wish it could have caught all of his "new parents". What is it about Republicans that they can't grasp the importance and substance in such a simple gesture?

Yes, and then there is the multi-millionairess (Hillary), who bragged about taking money from a kid who sold his bike and video games to support her. Wouldn't a normal person be embarassed to admit that she took his money?

Seems like decades ago, but McCain used to care about Native Americans....or so he said.

Thank for sharing this story. It is one of the nicest story.
It shows Obama's depth and humanity.

"Barack Black Eagle" is so bad-ass!
There's a nice diary up on Daily Kos as well:

Wouldn't McCain be "Old One Who Breaks the Wind."?

Thus far, I've resisted specifically saying that I'm from Montana on this site. I guess I didn't want people to discount my opinion when they figured out how little my vote is actually worth.
But today is different. I am always proud of my home state, but today I'm proud in a whole new way.
I wonder if people outside of Montana can really comprehend how big of a deal this really is.

I was born and raised in Missoula, and only moved away to the desert 3 years ago. I miss the mountains and green like crazy. Whereabouts are you?
As a fellow Montanan, this story (and others coming out from home) also made me smile like you can't believe.

Typing from Missoula right now (been here 7 years.)
Ever go dancing at the Union Club? If you did, I probably played music for you.

The Union Club was always too country for my tastes, unfortunately.
Man, I'd love to be up there for the week leading to the primary. Missoula in particular has to be going Obama crazy.

Believe it or not, MSO has a really committed HRC contingent right now, and they're still keeping the faith.
The Clinton field office is in the old Expert Tire building (across the street from the Elks.) There's a HUGE "Hillary" banner right under the "Custom Wheels" sign on the window...

Too bad they cemented the L a few years back, or we would've for sure seen some enterprising young griz running up there with spraypaint to form the O logo on Mt Jumbo. :)

But yeah, Obama's gonna slaughter Missoula.

Great blog. Thanks for the heads up and for the link. This is a momentous and historic occasion that is long overdue. It is way past time we honored our obligations under treaties signed under many presidents.
Just makes me more committed to seeing this man elected. I have a feeling I'll be making a lot of phone calls and shaking a lot of hands between now and November.

We need to come up with Crow Nation names for some other people:
John McCain, Mark Penn, Ted Stevens, etc, etc
I'll start with the easy ones:
Bill "One who showers a lot" O'Reilly
Larry "One with wide stance" Craig

until we acknowledge, honor and respect our 'native nations' , we cannot move forward as a nation, a people, of this sacred land we call america. this is a small step, but it is a begining---this can begin a process of healing, and it will.....indeed, it will.......

Another small step forward would be recognizing that facetious "Indian Names" are really pretty disrespectful of the culture.

Donal Fagan -- any relation to Brian Fagan, the archeologist/anthropologist?

Proof that TPM is more erudite than most websites - usually I get the Steely Dan question (even though we're spelled differently). No, I'm no relation to Brian, but I've browsed one of his textbooks.
