What's up with Politico?
They've already labeled Obama's 'bitter' comments a gaffe and a stumble, even though Obama is sticking by his comments. One of their 'journalists' stated that Obama was taking a 'swipe' at rural voters.
This was no gaffe. This was no stumble. This was certainly not a swipe. Politico wants nothing more than to extend this race so that they can generate more clicks and thus more ad revenue.
They can continue to misread, distort, and tell outright lies all they want. But I would submit that it's Politico and other news outlets (e.g. Jake Tapper) that are out of touch with America, more so than Clinton and McCain.
Being from rural America, I can confirm that people are, in fact, bitter when it comes to the economy and the failed promises of past Presidents. And they do turn to other places for comfort such as other political issues and to social ideas.
I don't need Politico, a D.C. based outfit, to tell me that what Obama said is not true. They are wrong, and Obama is right.

They should play the quote completely for context. It was still a political mistake though. I go crazy when Obama gives these Clintons an inch and with the media they take a mile.

Eponysterical, bf. Like your namesake, you offer the promise of genuine novelty and free-thought, only to collapse back into rigid party ideology. Good luck with that TV party, boss.

I can't claim this to be an original comment/thought, but:
I think part of the blog/on-line coverage of this campaign has been problematic (including the Election Central page here) because it is a campaign of some historical importance: i.e., a shift in power in DC AND (more importantly), and upending of the Clintons' ideological dominance over the Democratic Party.
So: Since this is a truly an election for "change," I would suggest that one of the factors driving coverage is what I will call the "Watergate ambition." I would suggest that bloggers/websites/"journalists" (I use this term in its most broad sense) would like to be the go-to "expert" on this election cycle, and one way to do this is to "break" a story - even if you have to make the story before "breaking" it.
Therefore you see incredibly over-the-top, handwringing stuff over the most ordinary back-and-forth that occurs in political campaigns: e.g., he said-and then she said... and OH MY GOD!!
It's unfortunate, especially since TPM's wonderful coverage/breaking of the attorneys general scandal was the kind of journalism which brought me to this site. But it was kind of funny to see Politico's guy just about have a fit as he proclaimed that Obama's remarks were going to be a PROBLEM!!! in the general election, with no, zilch, zero evidence of this other than his assertion that it would be so.
That he - and others-would repeat Clinton's argument to the superdelegates is disgraceful, but I think, frankly, that everyone is looking to get paid on this one (election).
Too bad.

agree one hundred percent.
It's a disadvantage of the internet and 24-hour news channels: everything becomes a story.
Even the things that aren't.

Exactly. Don't worry about what Politico or any other news source says.
The people know the truth, and they distrust the media more than they distrust politicians.

I hope you don't mind my saying this. I've run across your comments on each of the last dozen or more threads I've read and you sound, more than anything else, like you're trying to convince yourself. I'll be more than happy to hear I have this ass backwards, but if not, and if you haven't already, you might like to read this recent blog by Steve.

I agree with you. I was a reader of Politico for a while but they are so biased that I stopped. Ben Smith thinks the sun rises and sets in the crack of HRC's behind..so don't look to him for any kind of fair or balanced reporting.

Politico has so blown this whole "bitterness" thing out of proportion and if you look at the comments there are frothing Clintonistas and McSamers pounding on it. It's hard to go there and is much more enjoyable to comment here with informed and mostly like-minded people. Most of the comments I'm seeing at Politico are pretty uninformed and contain LOTS OF LARGE CAPS AND !!!! POINTS. But I like to jump in and provide counter points that I can back up with concrete statements and links. I just think it provides a good counter point and says to readers that there is Obama support on Politico too.

You are correct -- The Politico seems to be a very right-leaning "gotcha" outfit, especially the sleazy GOP-tool Ben Smith. They scour the web and news for something that they can dress up as "news", give an out of context headline, and throw out as redmeat for lazy MSM news outfits, who replay and repeat it.
I note also that ofcourse McCain gets a total pass all the time. He was introduced by some bigot the other day who refered to Obama as "Tiger Woods", and McCain sat there in silence and then gave him a big hug. This out-and-out racist rabble-rousing is apparently not a big enough gaffe.
Politico = GOP funded plant dressed up as "inside Washington"

I think they were trying to be racist... but all I could think when I saw the Tiger Woods comment was -
Tiger Woods the best at what he does?
Comparing Obama to Tiger is like comparing him to Walter Payton - the best in his profession that happens to be black.
Racists have limited abilities, making a racist comment that isn't really racist in its context just proves the limits of their intellect.

You mentioned Jake Tapper, and yes, ABC News is FoxNews Jr.
The amount of garbage, slanted coverage this cycle is phenomenol. Obviously the status quo, knowing Americans are fed up, is fighting hard to distract with bs fake news.

Bingo. Politico is hardly the only media outlet that does this. Much in the same way they keep reporting Bush's remarks on Iraq, its not like anyone believes him... but I guess people still tune in.
A few weeks ago Dana Perrino was on Jon Stewart and asked her why no one asks about Iraq. I don't remember what she said but I know why - No One Believes the White House Anymore When It Comes To Iraq - so why bother asking?
Hillary has the media to thank for the perception that her campaign continues to remain viable.

I don't think it is just ads. If so, why not play gotcha with McCain?
No, the Politico is obviously rightwing. Who founded it, where did it's funding come from, who runs it?
For a politico newspaper to just appear and become mainstream so quicly speaks of big backers and lots of cash.

Actually, it's pretty simple. Politico was founded to feed the market for what Halperin called "the freakshow" in his and Tapper's paeon to Karl Rove. They've been very frustrated in this election because mean people like Josh and Glenn Greenfield, and indeed the tone set by Obama himself (and St. John, to some extent), have forced them be more substantive than they want.
They've all been dying to cover this one with the reckless disregard for relevance that is their purpose for existence, and the pent up frustration has been killing them, particularly since the Race Speech. So the first time they see something that fits their definition of "gaffe" (i.e. talking to voters like they're adults) all that pent up frustration busts lose into an orgy of good old fashioned freak show coverage.
In two or three days, they'll have to face the fact that they overhyped this thing insanely and Obama's numbers in Pennsylvania didn't tank. Then they'll come to with that disoriented, unsettled, vaguely unclean feeling you'd get back in college when you'd binged on drugs and/or alcohol, woke up somewhere unexpected and found yourself in bed with someone kind of disgusting who you vaguely remember looking a really hot the night before. Then we'll have a few days of less indecent coverage from Politco and ABC until the shame wears off and the cycle starts again. Though not from Fox or Lou Dobbs, of course.
